Pretty awesome group with Farragut, Norman North, and Northwestern. Should be interesting to see how these teams do against each other. I'm pretty excited and can't wait to see what happens. Good luck to all teams..
btw, Farragut is 1-0 right now, with a 5-0 win on Tuesday... season just started this week. They play again tonight.
Quote: How do the semi's work if Farragut is the 1st seed on Saturday morning?
It is listed above.

Quote: Farragut's top two keepers, Steven Matlock and Lee Van Dyne, are both sidelined with broken fingers but should be back for the April 7-10 Palmetto Cup in Columbia, S.C. All-state midfielder Nick Peterson could also return from an ankle sprain late in the Palmetto Cup.
Prep Soccer Preview Knoxville News-Sentinel 1. Farragut (23-2-2): Best in PrepXtra, best in Class AAA, best in Tennessee overall … again? The talent-laden Admirals return 10 starters from last year’s state Class AAA champions and are prohibitive favorites to repeat. Farragut’s seniors have an opportunity to win an impressive third state championship in four years. Ryan Stinton (midfielder), Nick Muth (defender), Steven Matlock (goalie) and Carlos Ramos (midfielder) are cornerstones of a sterling senior class for coach Wallie Culbreth.
As my dad use to say...."why buy the cow, if the milk is free"
LOL, I have heard and used that one before! There will be a limited number of programs on sale at the tourney. Each team will receive their allotment and if we run into a situation where we need more printed "on the fly", then our supplier has assured us that they can do so. Just trying to keep some costs down in these economic times .

The PUBLIX tents are at each team's bench and midfield for the trainers and officials, while another one sits at the east end of the stadium where FATZ Cafe will be feeding our tournament volunteers and workers ... Walhalla is wearing the purple-black-black kit while Wando dons the white-white-black strip ... Both teams drove to Cayce this morning - Walhalla is staying three nights at the Riverside Inn in Cayce and Wando is commuting back to Mount Pleasant this afternoon ... HE TAKES PICTURES is on hand and reeled off more than 300 pictures in the first half ... Brandon Burkholder and Eric Fornell of Wando have a brace (two goals) today ... Match notes: Mid-day here at The Cage and Northwestern is dressed in an all white strip and Pinewood Prep is wearing a navy-white-navy kit ... The pitch is green and with the wide array of colored boots (green, red, yellow, white, etc.) on the pitch it looks like a bag of skittles was spilled ... The wind has picked up from the west and it is blowing directly into the press box as this facility sits on an east-west plane (most - well planned facilities - are generally north-south to prevent the sun rising/setting in those directions) ... Lots of photographers on hand roaming the touchlines and I believe most have visited the FATZ Cafe tent for a delicious box lunch (chicken wrap, salad, chips, sweet tea) ... The Cage's camera tower has national flags of Brookland-Cayce's players representing Honduras, Mexico, Sweden, and the United States.

HELLLLO BOYS (and girls) IMMMMMMMMMMM BACCCCCKKKKK!!!
Stepping off the plane from watching ManU get sent out by the Germans of Bayern Munich I've returned for the greatest season in the world...the South Carolina High School Soccer Season and what better place to make an appearance than the 2010 Palmetto Cup!
Tonights "night cap" (fancy those on Friday and Saturday nights a-thank-you) features the Admirals of Farragut (ranked #1 in Tennesee 3A, 4 ESPN Rise, and 5 NSCAA) vs The Timberwolves of Norman North (ranked #3 in Oklahoma, great place to take your Native American friends if I might add, 6A, 6 ESPN Rise, 6 NSCAA).
Only one injury to report as Farragut coach Wally Culbreath has apparently gracefully tripped over a soccer ball and had to be stretchered off by the athletic training staff at The Cage. It's a beautiful night here in the mid-state of South Carolina, a champion for state's rights!
As they call for captains at midfield I think I saw the illustrious governor of South Carolina Mark Sanford stop by and then leave with lady wearing a Lionel Messi jersey...I didn't know he had Spanish speaking relatives...intriguing to say the least.
I apologize for for the informality from this point on but since I don't know the players by name, like I tell my wife, I'll do my best as always.
Might I add that if you're feeling good about yourself come up to the pressbox at The Cage. The guys in the box will bring you back down to life. They are currently ripping my English accent and my pronunciation of the word "mum".
Action starts out hot and heavy as Farragut wins and early free-kick in the attacking third and it is headed away for a corner followed by a foul by the Admirals.
Farragut has started early, perhaps in mourning of their injured coach. They certainly have come in to the tournament hot, beating the crap out of everyone they've played. 4 fouls early have delayed the action.
Lame mid-field action and a heavy and quick whistle have really dulled play here. 6 minutes in there is not much to report...Norman North is making a push into the final third at the moment though.
I can hear Wally Culbreath screaming from the pressbox. He really wants to do well this week...who doesn't? This tournament is amazing. Norman North nets a corner but nothing comes of it.
Norman getting off their private airplane and maintaining some possession. Must be hard being practically sponsored by America's vice (beer)...both teams seem very similar: physical, powerful, talented but no one stands out as being very dynamic.
While there's a lull in the action let me take the time to congratulate Chelsea FC on an outstanding weekend last weekend. Way to smack the Red Devils and knock them down a few pegs!
Farragut has a line of players stretching back to the Tennessee River. 5 players subbing at a time for the Admirals. Still a very blase' midfield battle at the moment. Farragut is back on the pressure - 15 minutes played!
Farragut had probably the best chance of the game but nothing came of the service from the endline and Norman escapes unscathed. Farragut is back on the pressure...surely it's mounting to a goal at some point?
An injury has stopped play for a brief moment and play has resumed with a goalkick...I must say, as far as goal chances I've been more bored here than I was waiting in line for my free health care services adored now by you Americans...good luck with that BTW
These two nationally ranked teams have produced a nationally ranked snoozer in the first 24 minutes of action. As of right now I wish I was back across the pond eating a batch of mum's famous fish and chips! The standards must have been set too high by last years 4A State Final/National Title Final between Northwestern and Irmo...now those guys can play!
Just got a text from my wife saying that Tiger Woods' is down at the Master's...I've canceled her phone plan pending further investigation into this obviously private matter.
In other business, we just had our first shot of the game...a screaming back side cross that barely missed the post from Farragut on minute 30!
By my estimation the best player on the field right now is Ryan Stinton for Farragut, a tall and crafty central midfielder who has displayed nice skill and control.
Both coaches seem to be on pins and needles and really want this game. He Takes Pictures has made his way to the pressbox. Now this guy is a handsome gentleman.
10-9 on fouls with Farragut hacking more than Norman by the slightest of margins. Both teams will be taking no crap from anyone here in the the Westsiddddddddde of Columbia.
This Counting Crows is driving me absolutely MAAAADDDD! Is it too much to ask for some Coldplay or Muse? Absolutely fantastic bands from the greatest country on the planet (944 years and running to be exact!) Puny Americans
South Carolina should change it's name to the Pollen State...I can hardly breath. Wouldn't you know it? A couple of free kicks to start off action....Farragut has lumped it into the box. Good tackles by Norman to clear the ball.
I find it hard to believe a center official named "Correa" - pronounced like it sounds - would disallow a little North vs South action...38th Parallel anyone?
Line change for Farragut. Take-em off and bring em on coach as we have another goal kick. Defenses and midfields have certainly been tested and both keepers have kept their boxes tidy.
Both teams certainly do hit hard though. I haven't seen hits like this since before Lennon was tragically ended.
Both teams unquestionable have a high work rate and defensively each are SOLID. Unfortunately this has led to a boring night at the cage. Entering the 60th minute of action we are still scoreless.
Now the game's opened up as Norman comes right back down and forces a great save from the Farragut keeper! Corner was taken and another shot is saved as Farragut is having "Hey-I-Scored-A-Goal" hangover.
With 15 minutes to play the score is Farragut 1, Norman North 0. Think you got a good squad? Come to the Palmetto Cup.
By the way, while I look across the field I see that the Admirals have brought my boy Blue from the movie Old School, affectionately known as Captain Ahab!
We have a 6-2 count on shots in favor of Farragut. Norman will have to push in this last 10 if they want to get something out of this game and the tournament in general. I'd hate to be a coach who travels all this way to get wrecked.
With 7 minutes and whatever time the center official decides to add on, the score is still 1-0 in favor of Farragut and they look to put Norman North to the proverbial sword here in a few.
MORE FOULS and Norman is awarded a free kick. A tie would set this bracket off.
A goal bound effort is snuffed out by Farragut's keeper. Well played by the young lad but it was too far out to trouble him legitimately. He saw it the whole way.
More poker cards being displayed as Norman North has been issued another card! The third of the match..it's been a rough and tumble affair here in the 77th minute
Confident goalkeeping for Farragut. He has been called upon few times in efforts on goal but has controlled his 18 to perfection and has never looked troubled. Entering the final minute of play...more fouls. Correa will be taking more heat than Kim Jong Ill in a few seconds.
An injury and another yellow card for Norman North has prolonged this affair. Time for a good pint at a local pub if you ask me. Any takers?
In the meantime...a clown in the pressbox is continuing his use of "I LIKE MUSTACHES" I have no idea what that even means. I think he's a bit mental. Aren't they all?
That is the final whistle as Farragut gains the 8 points!!!!
That is all from The Cage tonight ladies and gentlemen! I might be around for a match or two tomorrow...maybe not. Let's see how the nightlife in Columbia treats me.

Why wasn't this on during the Farragut game! man. I really could have used something to do while in class today. Oh well, maybe tomorrow? You all really do this tourney well.
Curious as to what you guys think of Farragut and how they compare to the South Carolina teams? I am sure quite a lot of people here in East TN are wondering the same. Size? Depth? Skill?
thanks guys for the bit of analysis. I wish Farragut could get some home games against out of state teams. They did in '07, played Harrison High School from Georgia, I believe they went on to win state that year, as did Farragut. Harrison looked huge in size comparison, but Farragut jumped out to a 2-0 lead. They finished tied 2-2, but I enjoy seeing teams from different states. It's just something different. Can only see the same schools so many times before it's not interesting anymore. Especially when some of them don't really compete. anyways... oh I also shall accept those friendships... now if only I could change my name?
I'll be watching/listening the rest of the day guys. again you guys do this thing really well. Been impressed ever since Farragut has been in it.

NHS/Norman North was a pretty entertaining match. First, the NN player flicking off the NHS player right in front of the ref was pretty entertaining, don't know how the ref missed that one. There were a couple of monster goals, a whole lot of banter, and some physical play. The best part was Ricky Garbonzo's free kick, about 25 out I would say. A fan in the crowd yells for him to dip it and Ricky turns around and says "you want me to dip it?" Sure enough he does, goal NHS. I would put it in my top 5 high school goals.
Caught first half of Chapin/Wando. Felt Chapin had better run of play. Didn't see anything from 2nd.

It's been a solid tourney so far, no doubt.
To make Ricky's Free kick even sweeter was the fact that the fan you refer to was his club teammate, Emmett. They know each other's abilities pretty well. I wish I had seen it.
Well it looks as if my Player Power Rankings aren't too far off. Players for the tournament so far are 1, 2, and 3 on those rankings Eric Fornell, Dennis Moore, and Ricky Garbanzo. Ballin!!

I'm back and better than ever! This next tasty match up will be for the group as Wando takes on Fort Mill in approximately 10 minutes. Hide your mothers and daughters as this promises to be a slug fest of epic proportions!
"I Wanna Make A Baby With You" by R Kelly just came over the loudspeaker as one of the BC Staff just walked into the Cage. The excitement is brewing as we are about to have captains and coaches at midfield.
Fort Mill, obviously tired of playing second fiddle to Northwestern for all these years has really had a good tournament, besting all challengers thus far in stunning fashion. Wando has continued its impressive run of form throughout this 2010 campaign and totally obliterated the field thus far.
As the first half gets underway the action has been compacted into midfield with neither team fielding a shot yet. There are plenty of shots being fired in the pressbox though.
Approaching the 10 minute mark and both sides have had a couple of long throws into the box...neither side seeing a result to favor them. I will say tho, a result that favored me recently happened last weekend...Chelsea 2, ManU 1. THANKS FOR SHOWING UP!
Shot save as Fort Mill strikes first...a less than riveting floating header that won't trouble any keeper over 5 feet. Luckily enough for Wando their keeper is over that height requirement.
The weather is here and wish you were beautiful at The Cage right now.
Now Wando back on the attack as they force Fort Mill into their third and get a shot but is way too high into the stratosphere to trouble anyone but the helicopter circling Tiger Woods at the Masters
I must protest some of the hair styles by you Yank Children. Have some respect for yourselves. The "lampshade" went out with...well Lampshade from Fat Albert.
Back to the action now as one of my comrades in the box has begun daydreaming about Dennis Moore's arms and chest...
He certainly has a point as that match up is to offer high drama this evening in the 4 oclock game. I'm getting adult-excitement just thinking about it.
Shot-Save from Fort Mill as they pressed Wando and the Warrior keeper was forced into a rebound save. Fort Mill has 2 shots to nill on Wando but Wando continue to maintain a good bit of possession as we head into the 22nd minute!
Hold on a sec... GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLL
Wando on the counter comes in and picks up an easy netter! Andrew McKellar with a strike
Friday, April 9 Results Chapin 1-1 Walhalla Norman North-OK 4-1 Pinewood Prep Wando 4-1 Fort Mill 4 pm, Northwestern (13-1) vs. Farragut-TN (7-0) 6 pm, Bishop England (8-3-3) vs. Brookland-Cayce (11-2-2) 8 pm, Cardinal Newman (9-4) vs. Christ Church (7-2-2)
Wando just recieved a freekick outside the area toward the middle and Fornell strikes it brilliantly but the keeper is up to the test this time and makes the save!!
Approaching the half hour mark now with the score Wando 1 - Fort Mill 0
GOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL Wando!!! Their third of this half! Wow
Just awful goalkeeping for Fort Mill as he has really gifted Wando their last 2 goals...he absolutely spilled a slow roller and watched as a Wando player made a date with the goal mouth and she went all the way!
Wando is still working hard out there. They've really had an impressive tournament! Coming up on a half hour to play the score is still 4-0 with Wando on cruise control.
They convert and the score is 4-1 on 51 minutes. Questionable on the penalty but it was given and converted. Fort Mill has some life or do they as Wando seems pissed!
One has to think that if Fort Mill's keeper had not been so inept then we would be looking at a much closer contest but alas we can wish in one hand and **** in the other and see which one gets filled up first.
Approaching 10 minutes to play and the game has really gone into a lull as Wando has put in many reserves. Fort Mill still trying to attack but can't really get a good build-up to challenge the net.
Robby in the press box is starting to get ancy up here in anticipation for the next match up. He can barely keep his legs closed.
Thanks to all of the collegiate coaches in attendance this week at the 18th Annual Palmetto Cup:

So based on this, the wildcard is down to Fort Mill and NW or Farragut. If NW wins, FM will get the wildcard. If NW loses and scores only once, FM gets the wildcard. If NW loses and scores more than once, NW gets the wildcard. Is that correct?
Yes, it looks to be Fort Mill in as the wildcard representative. A draw between B-C and Bishop England would result in a max of six points for both squads. Bishop England would then advance as group winner.
Seems like based on what it says above Farragut will play in 8:30 game no matter what and since 8:30 was supposed to be #1 it makes sense that Wando play Farragut!
To me, it seems a bit strange that Brookland Cayce (the host of the tournament) was given the easiest "road" to the semis. It is unfair to some of the quality teams in the tournament (ie Norman North) that they are put into a group with three top 7 nationally ranked teams.
Scenarios for Saturday's Match Schedule UNOFFICIAL AT THIS TIME:
*** Due to Farragut's Prom on Saturday night, Farragut will play at 8:30 am.
Semifinals 8:30 am (Semifinal #1) - Wando (29 pts.) vs. Farragut (25 pts.) 10:30 am (Semifinal #2) - Bishop England (22 pts.) vs. Fort Mill (21 pts.) 12:30 pm (11th Place) - Chapin (2 pts.) vs. Pinewood Prep (1 pt.) 2:00 pm (9th Place) - Walhalla (4 pts.) vs. TBD 3:30 pm (7th Place) - TBD 5:00 pm (5th Place) - Northwestern vs. TBD 6:45 pm (Championship)- Winner Semifinal #1 vs. Winner Semifinal #2
Note: Should Farragut defeat Wando, Farragut will be the tournament champions. Wando will then play in the 6:45 pm match to determine second place.
Most scenarios have Cardinal Newman vs. Walhalla in the 9th place match, Brookland-Cayce vs. Norman North in the 7th place match, and Northwestern vs. Christ Church in the 5th place match.

You are quite entitled to your views.
First off, Norman North and Farragut specifically asked to play the best possible competition -- as they have done every year.
Second, the tournament schedule begins to take shape shortly after the season ends. It is then tweaked and refined as teams add and drop out throughout the fall and early spring.
Finally, the overall quality of the teams in this tournament is such where there are no guaranteed wins or cakewalk matches. These teams contend for their respective state championships year-in and year-out.
Please look over the 18 year history of this event and the brackets as they have played out. You might be surprised to find that B-C does not shy away from playing anyone in this tournament event.
Note: Should Farragut defeat Wando, Farragut will be the tournament champions. Wando will then play in the 6:45 pm match to determine second place.
While I understand and appreciate the desire to return for a school function, it seems a bit presumptive that the other Semi-Final winner may not have a chance of winning the tournament. Sound like a BCS spillover!

Agreed, that is an extremely dumb policy. It's not like Farragut didn't know of the scheduling conflict beforehand. Might as well just cancel the championship and have that be the 1st place game if that is the case.
This has been a quality tournament other than a few minor details that weren't noticed by the organizers. It is completely unfair. By the FM-BE game, they will know if their game means anything. There is no way Farragut can be crowned champions if they dont play in a champiionship game.

There is no way this can be billed as the "Southeast's Premier High School Boys Soccer Tournament" without a championship game lol, loses a lot of credibility
From the tournament rules: "*** Should Farragut-TN reach the Semifinals, then the Admirals' opponent in the Semifinals will play in the Championship because FHS has to return to Knoxville for their school prom that night. Farragut, should they qualify for the Semifinals, will automatically play in the 8:30 a.m., Saturday contest and the other Semifinal match will play at 10:30 a.m."
THEREFORE
Even if Farragut defeats Wando, Wando advances and plays in a championship game against the winner of BE-Ft. Mill. Wando is NOT automatic champ and BE or Ft. Mill second. The championship game determines the winner.

Semifinals 8:30 am - #1 Wando vs. #2 Farragut 10 am - #3 Bishop England vs. #4 Fort Mill
*** Should Farragut defeat Wando in the Semifinals, then the Admirals will be declared 2010 Palmetto Cup Champions. Wando will play in the 6:30 p.m., match regardless of winning or losing in the Semifinals and will either play for the title or second place. This was agreed on by Wando and Farragut since they achieved the highest point totals. Farragut has to return to Knoxville, Tenn., mid-morning because the FHS Senior Prom is Saturday night.
Placement Matches (team listed first is home team and will wear light jersey) 12:30 pm, 11th Place - Chapin (0-2-1, 2 PTS) vs. Pinewood Prep (0-3-0, 1 PT) 2 pm, 9th Place - Walhalla (0-2-1, 4 PTS) vs. Cardinal Newman (0-3-0, 3 PTS) 3:30 pm, 7th Place - Brookland-Cayce (1-1-1, 12 PTS) vs. Norman North-OK (1-2-0, 9 PTS) 5 pm, 5th Place - Northwestern (2-1-0, 20 PTS) vs. Christ Church (1-0-2, 17 PTS)
All matches will be played at The Cage on the campus of BCHS, weather permitting. All matches in group play during the tournament will be SCHSL regulation length (80 minutes). However, only Semifinals and Championship matches on Saturday will observe the 80 minute regulation time plus two five-minute overtime periods and penalty kicks if necessary. The Saturday 5th-11th Place matches will consist of two 30-minute halves and no overtime periods.
My question is, was this decided before the tournament began? If so, then the other teams knew what they were up against. Farragut would essentially be punished for going 4-0, and beating 3 top 15 teams, yet they would get 3rd? When no other team in the tournament would have accomplished anything like that.

Based off of the previous two posts, no.
"This was agreed on by Wando and Farragut since they achieved the highest point totals. Farragut has to return to Knoxville, Tenn., mid-morning because the FHS Senior Prom is Saturday night."
Agree that no other team would have accomplished the same thing, but this is a tournament, not a round robin. The best team in a tournament is not always the winner. You won't find another tournament in the country that bills itself as being one of the best that changes rules during the competition and doesn't have a championship game.
This is a change in the rules that were posted in your tournament program! Farragut came into the tournament knowing they would forfeit if they reached the semis. That is what is stated in your rules. Now, you state that if they beat Wando they will be champions because those two teams agreed! You shut out the #2 & #3 teams of having any chance of winning! In addition, they have no say in the matter! That's not what was represented in your rules.
Quote: "Farragut has to return to Knoxville, Tenn., mid-morning because the FHS Senior Prom is Saturday night."
I gathered that much.... Seeing as how it has been mention several times.... I get that there needs to be a championship game. I was just wondering if this was a possible exception to the rules before the tournament even began. I know it was never mention on these boards, but that doesn't really mean anything. I don't think it would be very fair for a team to lose their semi-final game, yet still win the championship, simply because the team that defeated them had to leave early. Would Farragut still get 3rd? That just doesn't seem right. In my opinion there isn't really a win win situation to come out of this, unless Farragut loses the semi-final game. If Farragut wins and gets the championship, the tournament get's the shaft. If Farragut wins and they don't get the championship, it could be seen that they get the shaft. Overall a lose lose imo.
Oh yeah, forgot this...... GO WANDO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then we'll have a fairly run tournament with a proper championship game instead of a faux champion.

You quoted the wrong part.
"This was agreed on by Wando and Farragut since they achieved the highest point totals."
Obviously the rules were changed, and it wasn't agreed on by anyone but the two schools.
I don't see how it would be a lose-lose. Farragut knew coming in that they couldn't win the tournament. However, they will move up in the national rankings due to their great performance. That should be enough.
Lets just put it this way, if you all want it to be like a tournament, then the winner of the other semi final should be crowned champion if Farragut defeats Wando. Farragut would just forfeit the championship game. Not the semi final. The loser of a semi final doesn't deserve a shot at the championship because they lost. Farragut would just become runner-up. That's the only way to do it fairly if Farragut beats Wando.
The only other way I could only see it is being NHS gets through, that way no semi finalists are effected. Farragut could have won and been given a consolation early in the am and NHS get through by means of placing 2nd in the group.
But as stated many times, the teams knew, the fans knew, it's not like director's didn't go over every scenario. Everyone was on the same page so it doesn't really matter what the rule is or not, in the end they thought this was best. It's a great tournament either way, all 4 semi finalists are solid and the championship will be great either way.
So rules don't matter? Isn't entry in the tournament a contract with the terms stated? If you bought a car for $25,000 and then after you signed the contract and took the car the dealer called and said you owed another $5000 would that be fair? And if you saw the speed limit posted at 55mph and you were doing 55mph but the officer stopped you and said "Sorry we just changed that speed limit to 45mph - here's your ticket" would you think that rule change was fair?
It has been a good tournament but that doesn't mean the rules should change because two teams and the director agree. They forgot to post the "director can change the rules at any time" rule.
This path seems poorly thought out and stated. Easy thing to have said was Wando play Farragut if Farragut wins and then Wando wins the final then Wando can give the Championship to them it will be their choice. The other team if they beat Wando would be champion and Wando can send them the second place trophy. To say the winner of the first game is champ no matter what is to say that BE never even had a chance!?!? Farragut can be proud of how they played but they knew going in they were leaving before championship game so do they now think things should be changed for them?
You know the Patriots were never supposed to lose to the Giants but they still played the game.
Marta, did you personally ask your coach if he was asked about the rule change??
Because word on the street is that he was and Coach Khouri was happy to play Fort Mill because the Bishops will be playing Wando on Tuesday of the next week!!!
I really don't think any of this should matter...Wando wins in the morning they win the championship. They are number one after group play and would have beaten two of the three semifinalists. Farragut wins, well hell they beat the number 6 team in the nation; Norman North, the number 8 team Northwestern and whatever the ranking may be for Wando. This was the best scenario and stop complaining because you don't get a free pass to the final like you receive every year in 2A
p.s. Thank GOD the CUP is during holy week next year!!!
I also think it is VERY impressive the ENTIRE Farragut team is going to the Prom. Studs on and off the pitch! Lineup for Dancing With The Stars Season 35!
It has been a good tournament but that doesn't mean the rules should change because two teams and the director agree. They forgot to post the "director can change the rules at any time" rule.
or should it say, "director can change the rules at any time with the consent of the other coaches" rule? Pretty sure I heard him talking to one of the coaches on the phone as he was walking towards the other side of the stadium. He said something to the effect that the coaches had to agree to it.
Where were you when all this was being hashed out? My guess, if you made the trip, probably at the hotel...sounds like you need a jump to conclusions mat!
Wouldn't you be jumping to conclusions by making assumptions from overhearing one phone call? (and one-half of the conversation at that)
If all FOUR coaches agree that's great. Seems it would have been easy to state that on the post regarding the champion to dispel rumors and protect the tournament reputation.
If Wando loses to Farragut, but defeats the winner of the second semifinal in tonights closing match, Wando defers the championship to Farragut.
If Wando loses to Farragut, then loses to the winner of the BE/Fort Mill match, the winner and champion of the tournament is either Bishop England or Fort Mill.
All four coaches from the four semifinal participants were a part of the process. The decision to defer the championship to Farragut in the event that they defeated Wando and then won the championship match was between Wallie Culberth, head coach of Farragut, and Shilo Tisdale, head coach of Wando.

Anyone have final thoughts on Farragut? Were the fans(parents) that made the trip good sports? Were the players good sports? Final thoughts on the size, speed, skill, athleticism of the players? Just general overall thoughts of them?
I thought Farragut was the best team in the tournament. The parents that traveled with them rivaled in size to some of the in-state teams and like all us soccer fans celebrated the good and questioned some of the calls of the uniformed men. I also thought #16 did a great job owning the midfield and #6 did an excellent job on defense this weekend. I also thought I heard that they committed to the tournament before their prom was scheduled. In any event, they were a quality team, simple good soccer.

They also have a kid who has a throw in that rivals Billy Padula from Irmo. The first two goals against Wando were off of his long throw ins.

Sorry in advance for the monster post that follows: Hindsight makes everything clear, so this is just a suggestion that today’s Semi-Final/Final solution not be used as precedent in future tournaments.I believe everyone tried to do their best with the decision, but it seems like the course taken took most of the meaning out of the Semi-Final and Final matches.
The Semi-Finals should have been played in accordance with the normal seeding procedures – 1 plays 4, 2 plays 3. In this case Wando was #1 seed, Farragut #2, so assuming they both won their matches, they would have met in the Final. Instead, since Farragut already knew they would not be able to play in the Final, they would have had to forfeit the championship match, and that’s no fun for anyone, so I imagine this was part of the reason the decision was made the way it was.
Because Farragut would not have been able to play in the championship match, should they have had any chance at winning the tournament? I have never seen any tournament where a team that doesn’t play in the championship match gets to win. Very strange. Farragut's early departure advantaged them, but disadvantaged the other three Semi-Final teams.
This would be my proposed solution, prior to the tournament, knowing one team would not be able to make the finals: The tournament proceeds as normal up through Semi-Final play – with all the regular seeding being adhered to for those games (although Farragut should still play the earlier time). If Farragut won their match (#2 v. #3), then there is no choice but to have them forfeit the Final. Allow them to keep the “Finalist” recognition and their 4-0 record.
Then play the Final as follows – the winner of #1 v. #4 is obviously through to the Final. Then between the losers of the Semi-Finals decide who advances based on points (clean slate – no group play points allowed). So, which ever team scored more goals, even though they lost, should advance to the Finals. If there was a tie, then go to PKs.
This solution would keep all games meaningful for the most teams: Farragut has motivation to win their Semi-Final match because they want to keep a winning record and could talk about how they would have won the Final if it weren’t for the Prom. They don’t lose anything, keep bragging rights, and make their girlfriends happy.
Wando would have motivation to win because they want to pass through to the Final without having their fate resting on the score of the other Semi-Final. But they would also know that if they didn’t win, they would still have a chance at a Final match berth if they had a higher score, and they would be motivated to get on the board. (On the other hand, with today’s solution, it also doesn’t make sense for Wando to get an automatic pass through to play in the Final after they lost their Semi-Final).
BE and Fort Mill would both be motivated to win, or build their score, because they both would have a chance at going to the Final regardless of who loses.
Then, with this lineup in a Final match, both teams are playing for themselves. In the current arrangement, Wando is essentially playing for Farragut. It could be hard to be motivated to win that game since success means that the team who just smacked you down 4-0 would be the tournament champions. This would also be better for BE if they win, because then they can unhesitatingly say they won the tournament – now their victory may be a bit tainted because they actually did not play the “best team” of the tournament.
The rewards of the first Semi-Final match weren’t congruous: the first Semi-Final game was really one team playing for first, and the other team playing for a chance to get to Finals (where they would still have to win one more game in order to win the tournament).
Since this situation was known prior to the tournament, it doesn’t seem like the scenarios were taken to their logical conclusions. The rules should not depend on how WE think the tournament should turn out (it seems like everyone thought Wando and Farragut were the best anyway so they just wanted them to play regardless of the rules). The result of the tournament should be on the performance of those specific teams on those specific dates, in accordance with rules in place before match play begins. We all know how unpredictable soccer can be, so there’s no telling what may have happened if all Semis were played as seeded. Instead, the first Semi-Final match was basically being treated as the championship match, so today, the Semis followed the Final. Weird.
That said, Farragut was an excellent team and deserved their 4-0 win today. They displayed sportsmanship and skill, and I hope they return to the Palmetto Cup next year.

My thanks to Kevin and Kyle and everyone that put on the Palmetto Cup. For my team Walhalla it gave us a chance to try some things and work on some others at a very fast pace. We got to see how to play at a high level and the mistakes (which were many) are all coachable. For our small public school we got alot out of it. Thanks Again.

Another great tournament run by Brookland-Cayce. I don't think there is a better way to gauge where your team stands in the weeks before play-offs. Look forward to it again next year.

Quote: The Farragut High School boys' soccer team took a giant step last weekend toward capturing the program's second national title.
The Admirals (10-0) ripped off four wins in the prestigious Palmetto Cup in South Carolina, downing three of the nation's top 12 teams and South Carolina's defending state champion from its private school division.
Quote: Elated he’d beaten the school that captured last season’s high school soccer national champions, Farragut head coach Wallie Culbreth said strategy was critical in his No. 4 nationally ranked Ads (ESPN Rise) beating two top-10 nationally ranked teams in the annual Palmetto Cup in Columbia, S.C. April 7-10.
In that article it says Farragut "dominated" Northwestern.. I don't know if I'd say that, but you know how sports writers can be. Especially when they aren't there?
A postseason update on the 2010 Palmetto Cup teams:
Bishop England (2A #1, 17-4-3) - #1 seed Class 2A Lower State playoffs, Region 6-2A Champions Brookland-Cayce (3A #5, 17-7-2) - Region 5-3A Co-Champions Cardinal Newman (SCISA #2, 20-7) - 3A State Finalists, Region 1-3A Champions Chapin (3A #3, 17-5-1) - Region 4-3A Champions Christ Church (1A #2, 14-6-2) - #2 seed Class 1A Upper State playoffs Fort Mill (4A #5, 17-6) - Region 3-4A Runner-Up Northwestern (4A #2, 22-2) - Region 3-4A Champions Pinewood Prep (SCISA #1, 17-9) - 3A State Champions, Region 3-3A Champions Walhalla (2A #3, 13-9-1) - #1 seed Class 2A Upper State, Region 1-2A Co-Champions Wando (4A #3, 22-3) - Region 7-4A Champions
Farragut-TN (3A #1, 18-0) - #2 nationally Norman North-OK (6A, 13-3) - 6A Semifinals vs. Tulsa Union (11-1) on 5/11, six of seven seasons in Semifinals
3A #1 Farragut (19-0) routed Knox West (2009 Palmetto Cup Finalist) 6-1 in the District Semifinals on Wednesday and the Admirals will face arch-rival 3A #2 Bearden (17-1-2) tonight in Knoxville.
Five players from the Norman North boys soccer team, which won the Class 6A state championship Saturday, were selected to the District 6A-2 West all-district team.
Will Smith, Gus Jenson, Trevor Laffoon, JT Harrison and Taylor McCauley gave the T-Wolves the most players of any school selected to the team. All five players are juniors.
Smith led the state in scoring with 24 goals and scored the game-winner in Norman North’s final three games, including the state final.
Mustang had four players on the squad in Denny Landrum, Drew McElhaney, John Anderson and Jacob Strassle. Edmond Memorial’s Stuart Turnipseed, Jacob Stivers and Ty Stukey also made the team.
The rest of the squad is made up of Joshua Garcia and Martin Ochoa of US Grant, Eduardo Caballeros of Putnam City West, Taylor Vanderford of Westmoore, Chris Issac of Lawton Eisenhower and Shawnee’s Colby Anderson.
Farragut lost 1-0 to Centennial in the semi-finals. Gave up a goal in the first half. I believe there were several weather delays as well. Farragut was playing without 3 starters. 1 tore his ACL in regions, 1 threw a punch last game, and I am not sure about the other. Sucks that they finished 24-1-0. No state title, and probably no top 10 in the "nation"..
Their game should have started after the Farragut game. Not sure how it is going. What is, I am sure, a huge disappointment for Farragut, will only get worse if Bearden wins state.
also, Centennial, has a 6'8 goalie... Just thought that was interesting. Not sure how much of a role that actually played, but that's a huge guy in goal.
saw on the news, Bearden was down 3-0 to Hendersonville... Looks like the Farragut/Bearden dominance is over? will be only the 3rd time since 2001 that Farragut or Bearden didn't win state. Farragut has 4, Bearden has 3. Brentwood has the other 2.
also, they interviewed Farragut's coach.. He said he still believes Farragut is the best team in the nation..... "one mistake cost us the national title" I don't think they should be shunned just because of a loss, but at the same time, they didn't win their own state, so how can you say they are the best? The box score I saw, had Farragut with 11 shots on goal to Centennial's 2. Farragut had 3 great looks in the final moments of the game, but the goalie came up huge.
