In case you were not sure Fort Mill is also in SC and ramked at #25 on the list
The #1 curse continues.....
Only because the whole idea of ratings at a national level is absurd. Truth is, Wando was one of a handful of teams that could win a state championship this year. They were undefeated against a mediocre schedule. The PK win over Magnet (good as THEY may be) spoke volumes as to their vulnerability; much like last year's late-season loss to BE.
It's one thing to win when it's NOT expected (2011). Quite another when it IS (rightly or wrongly) expected (2012-13). That takes focus, leadership and discipline, from the top down, coaches AND players, ON AND OFF THE FIELD.
And the right 11-14 kids playing clearly defined roles.
My apologies to Fort Mill. I just overlooked them. As for Wando, how many DA players did they lose. Not making excuses for them, but that takes a toll too. However, it seems that Mt. Pleasant has a TON of kids playing soccer, perhaps more than anywhere else in the state. It seems that they would have more of a chance just due to their location and number of players in their pool. Congrats to DF, I don't know much about them, but that German kid must be good.
Wando lost quite a few to DA/college. Pretty sure Dutch Fork lost (at least) Rex Epps to DA ... one of the top scorers on the U16 side.
And yes, there are many in Mt. P who play. But the 2013 class was a bit of a golden age that ultimately won one H.S. title game, lost another, and then went their own way.
(Not a value judgment; just a fact.)
FWIW, that 2013 class, the MPSC '94s, were largely trained and developed by Kian Brownlee at MPSC.
I agree backscreen...the rankings are worthless. Specifically the national rankings!
back story; DF players Jermstad and Brosius (keeper) were passed over for Academy and played Premier league - while playing for SCUFC defeated SCUMP in the semi-finals of club ball U18 State Cup this year and went on to win State Cup - must have been some deja vu for some Wando players
How did the kid from Cardinal Newman get to take a leave from academy? Why didn't the Wando kids do the same thing.
I heard that they did, a lot of them "quit" but are still going to play academy because academy cant afford to lose them $$$$
I don't believe I posted anything about the amount of PT any of them got. No matter how much they play they pay the same. I know several who have been begged to come back-it's all about the $$$$$$.
Pretty sure Millard was granted an "exception" and could play both, if he wanted. He pretty much stuck to H.S. during the season.
As to the Wando kids, all but 2 (I think) opted for Academy for their own reasons. The 2 who played H.S. got varying amount of Academy PT in the Fall ... one more, one less. My sense is, the one who played more (Clark) was probably going to play H.S. all along, regardless of academy PT. Can't speak for the other.
As to the money question, Academy cut its basic cost in half this year, and most players were paid-in-full well before H.S. season began. So "begging" them back for the money is pretty much no the case.
