Wando Beat an excellent Irmo team tonight 4-1.

Irmo scored 1st on a incredible goal by #9.
Wando bounced back converting a PK by Andrew Eppelsheimer after a foul in box by Irmo. They scored again late in 1st half on a poor defensive decision by Irmo. After failing to clear a ball well, Wando's Brian Anderson won a 50-50 ball with the goalie at the 18. Mark Dominick headed the loose ball into goal.
3rd goal was after a prolonged scrum in Irmo box with a couple bouncing off of post, Ralph Lundy lofted a soft shot over goalie's outstreched arms. Final goal was late on a counter attack by Wando . Nick Filosa assisted to Brian Anderson.

Bizarre halftime where all 4 IRMO coaches disputed the 2nd goal with referee staff and then some wizard of an IRMO parent went out onto the field and confronted the refs. He was escorted (finally!) to the parking lot by the local police.

you know thats got to be tough on those spoiled irmo fans. to be gone in the second round ouch how long has it been since they havent at least made it to the semi's?

brian anderson....?

I thought he was one of wandos goalies?

I think Irmo has not played for the Upper/Lower State Championship game only 3 times in history. (including this year) This may the earliest exit ever....not positive though. Great game by both teams!!....but it sure makes it tough to win when you give up two goals.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/05/06 01:47 AM
Brian is the #2 goalie but He has been going in as a early sub for a forward.

great game! wando really came out and played tonight. they showed great heart and passion by bouncing back from 1-0 to win 4-1. there isn't much else to say about this one. kind of speechless. Amazing Game!
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/05/06 03:15 AM
Wando goalie - Taylor Hopkins (?) had an great game.
Several point blank saves. Most amazing was when he was off line about 10 ft and scrambled back and jumped to tap a shot over the crossbar. He landed on his back in the net afterwards.

Don't mean to overlook the other players. Obviously, whole team played well to beat a very talented Irmo team.

I want to congratulate Wando and Coach Rozzi on a good win last night and say that the energy and desire all the Wando players displayed in the match was very impressive! We wish you the best as you move on in the playoffs.

Last thing is that I have no idea who the fan was that came onto the field at halftime. If he supports Irmo I have never seen him before in my 26 years.
Posted By: Gentleman Dave Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/05/06 12:09 PM
This was definitely a very intense game. Wando came out hard from the start. I thought they were going to have a goal within the first 2 minutes, but Irmo settled down and got things under control. Can’t remember exactly when Irmo got the first goal, but the kid (Dulal?) who scored it must have beaten a half-dozen Wando players. And, I don’t mean he just went down the field and dribbled through them. He ran circles around them - literally. The Wando defense should have closed in on him, but they chased him, and he got through. It was an amazing effort. He used those same moves very effectively throughout the game.

As a somewhat objective observer, I found humor in the antics of the Wando and Irmo parents. I’m really kind of surprised no one has said anything yet about the officiating. While I thought the officiating overall was decent, you would never know it from the fans. Of course, no matter which way the call went, SOMEbody had something to say about it, usually the Wando parents…they are very vocal, and seemed to think the referee was an Irmo grad. I think that most of the calls against Wando were a result of Wando’s frustration with the better-skilled Irmo players, and also by them playing a fairly physical game.

Wando’s second goal was caused by extremely poor communication and passing by the Irmo players. Wando capitalized well. The third goal by Ralphy was a pretty one. The Irmo keep was probably a little further out of the goal mouth than he should have been, Lundy saw this, lofted one up, and the Irmo keeper was off-balance, running backwards, and unable to make a decent jump for it. The fourth goal was purely from Irmo pushing almost all their players forward, and they got caught short on a quick counter-attack by Wando.

Overall, I think the Irmo team had better individual skill and possessed the ball more, but Wando was able to take advantage of several Irmo mistakes. Very exciting match.

WANDO FANS ARE CRAZY!!! and i think they were getting into irmo's heads. and irmo did not possess the ball more than wando. they might have dribble and juked ppl more but wando controlled the game.
Posted By: salsa10 Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/05/06 12:52 PM
Wando came out to play and if the come out like they did last night they will surley make it to the state finals
Posted By: Gentleman Dave Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/05/06 01:00 PM
Maybe you saw a different match. There is absolutely NO way that Wando CONTROLLED the game.
Posted By: salsa10 Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/05/06 01:04 PM
What are you talking about you must not have been there. They out played, hustled, and out shot irmo. Yea maybe irmo dribbled more but wando played as a team and thats how your supposed to win
Posted By: LAMPSHADE Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/05/06 01:12 PM
get out of here!!! you might have just been focusing on them more because they have bleeched hair. and it probably turns you on.

possession= passing the ball and keeping it with your team.......not what irmo did which consists of kicking it out of the back up to their forwards and then they dribble.

get a tape of the game and watch it again and then tell me IRMO controlled the game.
Posted By: salsa10 Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/05/06 01:18 PM
i support Lamshade 100%
Gentleman Dave thats kinda of weird that abunch of blonde haired dudes turns you on
Posted By: Gentleman Dave Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/05/06 01:19 PM
Wando did hustle, and they may have had more shots, but the only thing they did notably better than Irmo last night was take advantage of their opportunities.

I imagine you are probably a student who was standing in the middle of the student section, and you just got a little overwhelmed by all the excitement.

In that situation, it's quite understandable how you would see things the way you did.

But, Wando will have to play BETTER soccer than they did last night to win state.
Posted By: Belligerent Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/05/06 02:15 PM
Hey, what did the guy who ran out on the field at halftime look like? My dad went for what I thought was a bathroom break when a commercial came on during Jeopardy, and came back a little while later breathing heavily and sweating profusely.

Was anyone hurt? Dang, now I'm gonna have to stick him back in the box.

Did they take their lunch money too? Fort Mill fans would have plucked the dollar bills right out of their hands.
Posted By: Pockets Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/06/06 04:34 AM
I have seen both of these teams play throughout the years and I felt that neither team played nearly as well as they are capable of playing. It was fun to watch but could have been better.
Posted By: soccer2888 Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/06/06 04:52 AM
Gentleman Dave I don't what game you were watching but Irmo certainly didn't posess the ball more than Wando. The only thing they would do is boom it up to their forwards and hope that Prince would get loose. You don't win a game 4-1 if the other team controls the ball. Wando controlled the ball, the game, and had their way with Irmo. End of disscusion.

Hi Mom,

The students were chanting at the parent wandering around on field berating the refs.
Posted By: soccer2888 Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/05/06 05:34 PM
Yea I don't think they would be chanting at two little girls. However, an Irmo fan walking out on the field to argue with the refs (another classic case of those spoiled Irmo fans) would be a prime target to chant at. So Irmo.mom, please get your facts straight before you start talking crap about Wando fans.

That was not an Irmo fan, get over yourself. There has been no trash talking or whining from the Irmo supporters or anybody else on here. They got beat last night, and so be it. Stop trying to start crap by saying that it was an Irmo fan, it was not....attempted argument/attemted way at making Irmo look bad is now over. Nice try though.

I'm going to copy and paste a post that was in the james island v spring valley forum that is one of the most classy posts I've ever read...

"This was a well fought match between two very good, evenly matched teams. Each side had their chances. It was a very emotional game, as playoff matches are, compounded by the fact that one of our player’s step-father had passed away the day before. I respect that Spring Valley players and fans believe a foul preceded the James Island goal. I don’t think any James Island supporter will ever believe there was one, and they will feel James Island tied the game. That’s the nature of the game we love. Several good teams lost last night. Many seniors state-wide will not be state champions and will face a similar end to their high school soccer experience. That too is the nature of the game. Any of us who have been the parent or coach of a senior who has lost a playoff game, or been in that situation ourselves as a player, know it can be a very emotional experience. Let’s try to respect that. There were several events that happened off the ball and a lot of physical play. But for every bit of pushing and shoving that happened at the end of the game, I also saw players on each side hugging, shaking hands, and trying to stop a situation that had not been controlled. I’m really proud of those players. Good luck to the seniors on each team in soccer and in life."

Obviously if you just change the team names...I'm sure the case is much the same...the irmo team and fans have a lot to be proud of..they lost to a very good wando team...not to mention that the history of excellence at irmo is something that has never been seen before anywhere in the country...players from both sides should hold up there heads...all of these players are quality both on the field and off the field...i don't see why we should bring disgrace to there accomplishments by acting like children on this message board...Thank you.

i really would like to know how you know that was an irmo parent.. i talked to a few irmo parents and we couldnt identify the man.. and how do you know he was disputing the 2nd goal?? did you talk to him or the refs??

maybe you thought to yourself that the 2nd goal was questionable and that could be the only thing that guy would go on the field for.. because the 2nd goal was in my mind controversial, and was a large momentum swing in the game.. not to take anything away from wando. wando played a well hard fought game and deserved to win.. they put the goals away when they needed to.

btw irmo's only goal by jugal, was so so nasty. literally danced around 5 players and put it in the net.. awesome goal, and good game.

"Two of Irmo's "spoiled fans" - little girls, ages 6 & 8, were on their way to the concession stand to get drinks (just after the announcement that "proceeds support Wando's soccer team"). Wando fans began chanting "LEAVE, LEAVE, LEAVE" at the children as they walked past. Very classy to intimidate 2 little girls. "

I was seated right next to the students...there was no chanting at any "little girls" i doubt the students were even paying enough attention to them to realize they were seated with the Irmo crowd (there were many kids running around and kicking balls, having fun, etc...as is the case with many wando home games) congratulations on attempting to discredit a very rowdy, but classy, group of student supporters...before calling them out perhaps you should review the actions of irmo students in past years...

How come this approach was not taken after the matches when Irmo was the victor all those years in the playoffs? Oh, all of a sudden, we want to talk about life lessons and sportsmanship and what really matters? No, in the past, the attitude towards something like this was completely opposite. It used to be winning was all that mattered. Now it is about life lessons. New song being sung by the Irmo faithful.

We have now gone from We Are The Champions to Butterfly Kisses - beautiful.

im pretty sure we all know the answer to that is: no...anyway, here's the article from the match. I just want to reiterate my hate for the post and courier...i think youll see why after reading.

soccer2888 and coldhardtruth, neither of you have been involved in soccer for very long if you have never seen a team possess the ball more than their opponent and still lose. CHT, you were not there - it WAS a close game - I think even the Wando fans would admit that.

CuTiger23, what is wrong with that article? I thought it was fairly well written. It doesn't have a whole lot of detail, but decent overall.

Someone is always going to whine about something after a game like that. Me? I'm not whining - I don't even care - I'm just saying that Irmo possessed the ball more. I didn't say a LOT more - just more....maybe 65-55.

Wando did what they needed to do to win - they took advantage of their opportunities, and they got goals from them. That is something that Irmo did not do successfully. Overall, the better team won last night.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/05/06 09:56 PM
I hope we can stay above the trash talk that these boards often fall to.
I would agree w/ Dave that Irmo did possess ball slightly more than Wando but Wando took advantage of their opportunities and Irmo did not. I would also say that Irmo probably had more talented players but that doesn't necessarily win games either.
Cu is upset because reporter got some names wrong in article. David Burley plays for Wando not Irmo. Same # as Prince.

for an example i played for hartsville when hartsville beat james island about three years ago and yes james island possessed the ball the entire game! and we just had break aways and took advantage of them. we came out with a 4-1 and really james island should of came out with the win. its old news but its dealing with the possession with the wando/irmo game.

WANDO 4-1 IRMO
Posted By: 4Adefender Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/06/06 04:29 AM
it doesn't matter about who possessed the ball more. wando wanted the game more than irmo. you could see it in the way they played. the put away the chances they created and irmo failed to do so. irmo lost. maybe they have better talent but like cutiger signs, "Hard Work beats Talent when Talent doesn't work hard."
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Wando over Irmo 4-1! - 05/06/06 05:22 AM
I've always hated that whole _____ wanted it more. First of all, how do you know? and second of all, I think both teams wanted it. Irmo was clearly the more talented team individually and probably deserved to win based on their play, the ball just went in for Wando three more times on Thursday. I've always said, "I'd rather be lucky than good."
For what it is worth, this was my championship...whatever happens next is gravy. I'll look forward to the next match of the Beach Bums verses the Bleach Bums.

Wando's play epitomized what my signature means. I am definetly a biased Wando supporter...anyone on this board can see that. It is true that Irmo was more skilled and won in the possesion department, but it appeared to me that the Warriors outhustled Irmo to almost every 50/50 ball and with the exception of their GOLDEN opportunity in the first two minutes (I know Filosa would kill to have that one back), they capitalized on every single opportunity they had, which ultimately was the difference in the match. It was a great game by both teams and an awesome one to watch. It really is a shame that one of these teams had to go out so early because this easily could have been the state championship match (just like last year and every Wando/Irmo game in the past)...and yes, swimmer was right, Burley plays for Wando, and generally the Post and Courier's soccer coverage sucks

Mom:
Very classy of you to DELETE your origional post. Shows you're somewhat of a coward for not being able to stand up for what you've said.

And for the record, I was in the crowd of Wando students at this game... We were chanting "Leave" at the guy (whoever he was) who was walking up to the referees at halftime. I didn't see any little girl. And I can speak for most (if not all) Wando students and say that we wouldn't do that at all to any little kids. Wando's fans, while rowdy, are still respectful and come from good parents.

If the little kids were offended, I'd be the first to apologize to them; but we weren't chanting at them.
