Was it a dirty tackle?

No it was not a dirty tackle, but Charlotte was very chippy in the second half after their keeper made a serious blunder on a ball played back to him from 40 yards away that he misplayed and it trickled in for a 2-0 USC advantage. In fact, with just under three minutes left, USC keeper Jimmy Maurer was upended in a hard tackle as he leaped to win a ball out of the air.

As for Wiltse, you knew it was bad when the Charlotte player came off the field with his face covered with both hands (i.e. Joe Theismann moment). As soon as Wiltse went down, teammates Danny Cates and Tyler Ruthven were waiving feverishly for medical personnel to come onto the pitch. Both teams showed a lot of respect and class for Wiltse as he was stretchered off the pitch.

Here's to a speedy and full recovery for Wiltse!

I was at the game ans saw the play. it was not dirty as it was just two players going hard after a 50:50 ball. It was easy to tell Mark was in a lot of pain lying on the pitch. It looked as if the injury took some steam out of the USC players. They were on their heels the rest of the game, seemed to just playing defense. The UNCC own goal was a goalie's (and goalie's parent) worst nightmare. Nice win for USC.

That was a tough injury to witness last night. You knew when it happened that it was a bad one because the player that made the challenge, sophomore Jason Hawes of Kent, England, put his hands over his mouth time it occurred after hearing the impact. Tyler Ruthven and Will Traynor immediately rushed over to Mark Wiltse and signaled for the trainers. From the Press Box, I knew it was significant because in four years of watching the senior from Belle Meade, NJ, I had never seen him down longer than 20-30 seconds for anything. It is definitely a blow to the back line for USC but with an upperclass dominated lineup the Gamecocks should be able to cope with the loss. Here's hoping for a successful and as quickly as possible recovery for Wiltse.
