Who has the upper hand in this game?

Mauldin is peeking right now.

Wando is coasting to the final.

Let's hear the reason why and why not.

If the teams are truly equal then I would say that battle tested Mauldin holds the edge with strength of schedule leading up to the match.

Taco Bell curse says Wando has no chance.

Have to make Mauldin the favorite.

Mauldin certainly has the "MO" during "May Madness"! They are playing very well and have been tested more! Winning 14 out of their last 15 (and that loss was in PK's).... lots to say about them but their defense has been truly outstanding!!! Should be a great game between the very talented and loaded teams!

Talent + Tough Schedule + Peaking with MO too! Does anyone remember Kansas in the Final 4!?!?! Only thing is that Wando has "been there, done that" from last year, but I will still take the Lady Mavs!!!!

Call me a Lowcountry loyalist if you want, but I'm picking Wando. I haven't had the chance to see Mauldin play, but those Wando girls can do some pretty amazing things with a soccer ball. If Mauldin really does have the edge in the talent department, I'd be mighty impressed.

Based simply on the strength of their schedule, Mauldin has been tested!! Wando has not had the teams to test them as often. Only tested at the first of the year when some teams were not at full strength.

It may take them 12 to beat Mauldin!

Mauldin 2-1

I think I will be wary instead

I cannot contain myself, I have to prognosticate on the potential AAAA girls Upper state v Lower state final game.

The soccer game between Dorman and Mauldin was excellent, so was the officiating, the game was allowed to flow and it was played very cleanly, the referee's were not a factor.

If the Mauldin v Wando game is officiated in a similar manner and the game officials disappear into the back ground, Mauldin will be very hard to beat. They are on top of their game, fit and fast and coming from a 15 place ranking they have beaten the top ranked teams away from home.

My call is for Mauldin to win 3-1

"My call is for Mauldin to win 3-1"

Wando allowed 2 goals this season and you think they will allow 3 in one game!!!! Very optomistic!!!

what each can do on friday is all that counts.

I'm very obviously biased, but if Wando settles down and plays their traditional game AND connects with the back of the net, they can beat pretty much anyone on the field. Plus, the girls have tasted the State championship, so I doubt they're going to go out there lackluster.

So my pick is Wando over Mauldin. And I wouldn't be surprised to see several of my Class of 2004 teammates in the stands cheering them on since they're all college grads now.

Lexington played both Wando and Mauldin; Lexington scored one of the two goals that Wando allowed all season that was referenced earlier in this thread. With no disrespect to either Mauldin or Wando, I would be amazed if Wando's defense allowed three goals -- Wando has the best defense I saw play at the high school level all season. I'd give a slight edge to Mauldin's offense over Wando's offense, but I'm not sure it's enough of an edge. The referees will also play a part -- if they call a tight game Wando will be disadvantaged because of their advantage in size and the fact that they play very physically.

I was at the last game. What I can remember is Wando had 4 or 5 players being recruited by D1 schools. Wando had a very tall team that year and I believe 3 of the scores were headers off corner kicks.

This should be a great game. Hopefully the refs will be a non-issue this year.

As stated, obviously no one knows what will happen in the game. However, I've beem impressed by the mental toughness that Mauldin has displayed by winning on the road in the playoffs over Lexington, TL Hanna, and Dorman. And, by how they've won those games.

I expect a very close game that could easily be decided on PK's.

Here's to a great game!

Should be a great game with both teams loaded with talent! One with experience of winning last year and the other who has clearly jelled and is on a roll by beating a very impressive list of very good soccer teams and a tough schedule.

In fact, all three ladies finals on Friday should be worth the price of admission.... just think 3 for the price of 1! I would definitely plan on the afternoon and evening in The Graveyard!

You will know who the winner is going to be in the first 5 minutes of the game. If the Referee allows players to get free kicks from flopping on the ground and allows constant late hitting than Mauldin will win. If he doesn't fall for the flopping and calls the late hits Wando will win.

From an earlier post in this thread:

"The referees will also play a part -- if they call a tight game Wando will be disadvantaged because of their advantage in size and the fact that they play very physically"

It sounds more like Wando may be doing the flopping and late hitting. Nothing wrong with a good physical soccer match.

I like to watch a good, physical match. too.

There is a huge difference in physical play and intentional late hitting. Wando does not play dirty and they do not "flop". I'm guessing Mauldin doesn't either.

The curse. It's kind of like gravity. You can struggle against it and sometiems hold your own for a while but it's always there pulling against you, moving you in a certain direction.

I didn't invent it but I was the first to bring it up, you know. Fort Mill vs WA in 2005. Fort Mill wished they'd never heard of it, I think.

These are the top two teams in the state. One will win and based on that outcome will be considered slightly better than the other. Both deserve props and no criticism as any coach/player/parent not in the state championship game would probably be more than happy if they were.

Two storied programs. It would be interesting to know if these two schools have the most 4A finals appearances between them over the past 10-15 years, and if not, what school does?

GIRLS AAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCES (1994-2008)

1.) Mauldin = 9
2.) Wando = 7
3.) West Ashley = 3

Mauldin and Wando lead the rest of the pack by a BIG margin when it comes to making it to the finals.

Where can you find a list of past Viking Cup winners?

I may be misremembering, but I thought in 1995 Wando went undefeated in the tournament. My thought is that there was not a playoff and that this was an exhibition format. Wando went on to win the state championship for the second straight year that year.

Also, the newspaper article states that Wando is playing for their fifth state title, but Wando's website says they have already won five and will be playing for six.

Wando has already won 5 state titles: in '94, '95, '97, 2004 and 2007. This would be their 6th.

The Curse works for the underdog. Mauldin's the underdog. I'd go with the curse on this one.

Pilgrim,

Of course the Taco Curse works for the underdog. What it says, fundamentally, is that if you're the best team at the begining of the season you'll have a hard time maintaining your edge all the way to the end of the season. Some have suggested that the Curse really doesn't exist at all but was only a device invented to distract Fort Mill in their attempt to run the table in 2005. Now it's in the papers so it has to be a real thing, I guess. But if it is a real curse it would have to work in favor of Mauldin this year.

Ryan, how many times has Maulding finished runner up in state since 2000?

Don't try and say the curse was an invention against Fort Mill. I didn't invent it but I was the first preson to notice it. Here's the original post from 2005:

"Re: Taco Results
#45282 - 02/20/05 06:19 PM

By finishing second, does taht mean James Island has side stepped the Taco Curse? No Taco Bell 4-A champion has ever gone on to win state the same year, I think. Maybe the same in 3A."

And I understand the rest. Still, nobody has run the table yet. Wando would be the first. Or Mauldin will beat them and the curse will continue.
