I think school staff--game administrators and coaches--should take point on crowd control, not the game officials. Their attention needs to be on the field, for safety as well as fair play.

A coach can set the tone for crowd behavior, sometimes without even realizing it. It seems really easy for some coaches to incite the crowd, which can turn ugly. It's also pretty amazing how much affect a "thanks, but tone it down" gesture to the crowd can have on otherwise well-meaning unrulies--often without the coach even needing to turn around and take his eyes off the field.

Oh, and if they yell "Coach is an idiot!" at least I know they're paying attention.

I always look at my assistant when that happens and say, "Which of us do you think they are talking about?"

You know the old saying, ROH...

If you have to ask...it's probably you.

(Not having an assistant on the sideline kinda removes all doubt on my end.)

I wondered why my assistant/JV coach started sitting on a separate bench way down the line this year...guess it was easier to make the distinction.

Well, you know, at some point they really do have to separate the wheat from the Chass...

What is really bad is when she is the one yelling "The Coach is an idiot!"
