FROM COFCSPORTS.COM - The College of Charleston men's soccer team fell by a 2-1 count to No. 19 Furman in the quarterfinal of the Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championship at the Stone Soccer Stadium on Sunday night.
The loss ends the Cougars' season at 5-8-5. Furman improves to 14-2-4 on the year and advances to the semifinals in Boone, N.C., on the campus of Appalachian State.
The Cougars fell behind by two goals then scored moments after the Paladins' second mark in the 71st minute but couldn't notch the equalizer in the remaining minutes.
Furman's first mark came in the 30th minute when Walker Zimmerman headed in a ball sent in after a corner kick with assists for Clint Ritter and Martin Ontiveros.
Immediately after the goal, the Cougars pushed forward and put two shots on goal but went into the locker room trailing 1-0 and behind, 3-4, in shots.
Furman peppered the Cougars with nine shots in the early minutes of the second half until breaking through with an insurance goal in the 67th minute. Ritter picked up the goal off a rebound from a blocked shot by Daniel Hojaij.
The Cougars cut the lead back to one moments later when Sean de Silva (Port of Spain, Trinidad) ripped a shot into the post and George Khoury (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) headed in the rebound.
Kees Heemskerk (Zaandam, Holland) went the full 90 minutes in net and made four saves in the match.
