What stats are kept for defenders. Why are only goalies credited with goals saved? Actually in a case where the goalie is out of place and there is a shot on goal, and a player blocks it or clears it, does the goalie get credited for the save?
Keeping track of good or completed passes and steals along with goals and assists would seem to more fairly evaluate all players on the field. Could you track forward completed passes or separate forward and backward completed passes. With all the stats kept in other sports, it seems soccer keeps relatively very few.

That play is called a "back save" and many teams track this statistic. Check out the Opta stats for the Barclays Premier League for more information.
