I haven't had to participate in this yet, but I would like to know how other coaches felt about having to go into Penalties to decided the Winner/Loser of a game. I am seeing a lot of games have to go into penalties to decide the winner, then it take the 6th or 7th shooter to get the result. Does that really determine the "Winner?" If I remember correctly B.E. and Academic Magnet went to the 11th kick? Barnwell and Hampton went to the 6th? Yes, we all ask "Who won" but when you can go through regulation and extra time and still not score, do you really think PK's solves it?

I am not trying to stir anything up. I am just wanting to know how others feel.

Eric, I always hated PK's. They should only be used in playoffs or tournament championship games.
Three points for a win, one point for a tie and zero points for a loss in conference games. Then you have tie breakers and if nothing else resolves the tie, you have a playoff game at a neutral site.

America is about winners and losers. Plan for it, be ready for it, practice it, then get up there and sink your shot. We will never get much farther on the world scene until we make this game our own, and this is one small way. Who cares if "no other league does it". Don't you know where you are? This is SC we have always gone against the norm. Then, when our boys are finally in a World Cup Final, they won't be shaking in their boots like Roberto Baggio in 94.

USA played Mexico to a draw ;which was a huge point for them in the qualifier. They do pks at the viking cup to see who advances but it goes as a tie on your record. Its a terrible way to lose or win. Maybe make overtime sudden death.Play till someone wins. Or maybe move the pk back 5 yards. PKs is the same as making a basketball team go one on one at the end of the game to decide a winner or a football team each trying 30 yard field goals till somebody misses.

I have to agree with the posters who say penalties are a terrible way to decide a winner. Ties are a part of soccer. A one on one kick 12 yards away doesn't determine the better team. I think a point system for region play makes much more sense. Just my opinion though, not sure how other coaches/fans feel.

Then why did we as coaches vote in JV games going to OT and shoot out! Explain that! I didn't vote for it but now my Varsity game starts later if JV ties!

I have to agree. The rest of the world, and the rest of soccer in the U.S., understands the point system, and it works. Why does high school have to do it just with wins and losses.
On the other hand, it could be worse. When my high school team tied a state semi-final game even after overtime periods, the state of Pennsylvania used the number of corner kicks to decide the winner (this was in 1973, and my team lost). Think of that the next time your game is decided by kicks from the spot.

There is no reason to use PKs at the H.S. level, EXCEPT in state playoff games or tournament knock-out stages. There is even less reason in JV games.
People need to understand that a draw is an honorable outcome -- especially when you have a 2-hour bus ride home on a school night.
For high school playoffs, I'd use the current system. If not for the fact that state championship games are played back-to-back at one venue, I'd advocate a 10-minute OT, followed by a golden-goal, as-long-as-it-takes, format, FOR CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES ONLY.

Alas, the reason is simple--it is part of American culture. I have seen a lot of free MLB over the years, some games going into the next day.
Ties are honorable and hopefully will be adopted soon.
