6/27/15 North Carolina gets Win and Draw at 2015 ClashDANIEL ISLAND, SC - The ninth annual Clash of the Carolinas was held Saturday afternoon at Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island and North Carolina retained the girls and boys trophies with a draw and a win, respectively. The girls’ match ended in a scoreless draw while the Tar Heels recorded the largest margin of victory in the boys’ series with a 7-0 shutout. North Carolina now leads the girls’ series 6-1-2 and the boys’ contests 5-1-3. The girls' game was highlighted by the play of all three goalkeepers and their efforts were rewarded with Most Valuable Player honors for North Carolina's Celeste Barnard of Panther Creek High School (Cary) and South Carolina's Sara Dooley of Pickens HS. Barnard was credited with three saves, including several reflex plays, while Dooley claimed five saves on 11 shots and controlled South Carolina’s back line the full 90 minutes. Allie Cutler of Broughton HS chipped in four saves as the Tar Heels faced 14 shots by the Sandlappers. The boys’ match was one-way traffic for the Tar Heels as North Carolina raced out to an early 2-0 lead and a 4-0 halftime advantage in a match delayed because of lightning and intermittent downpours throughout the game. Tresor Mbuyu of Garinger HS in Charlotte earned MVP honors for N.C., by virtue of scoring two goals and collecting an assist. Connor Hubbard of Eastside HS in Taylors was tabbed the MVP for South Carolina. New Hanover’s Ian Bennett also scored two goals while CJay Sparks (Jacksonville), Riley Zerfoss (Northern Guilford), and Hunter Weiland (Heritage) tallied a score a piece. In review of some money making areas for future Clash of the Carolinas, we broke down the Advertisement fees generated this year by both states.
In years past, South Carolina had more participation than North Carolina, but in 2015 that role was reversed as I spoke with the NC coaches at the NSCAA Convention this past January in Philadelphia and explained to them the importance of buying an ad to highlight their players and coaches. The Tar Heels responded with 31 paid ads compared to 13 for the Sandlappers. The generated revenue of ads was $4,500 ($3,100 by NC and just $1,400 for SC). NC was gracious to "split" those earnings this summer in large part due to SC carrying that banner in the past. The cost of the program itself was $2,100 for a 76-page brochure (or nearly $15 per publication).
It is imperative in the future that ALL schools represented in the Clash set aside some monies during the year to recognize your players/coaches. Also, to offset those printing costs - since we can only charge a maximum of $5 per program - is an increase to $175 for a Full Page ad and $100 for a Half Page advertisement.
Below is a breakdown:
2015 Clash Ads
2 Ads - 1 School ($200) River Bluff
1 Ad - 12 Schools ($1,200) Academic Magnet Ashley Ridge Brookland-Cayce Clinton Dreher Dutch Fork Eastside Hilton Head Island South Aiken Southside Christian Spring Valley Whale Branch
0 Ads - 11 Schools ($0 - missed out on a minimum of $1,100) Bishop England Chapin A.C. Flora Irmo James Island Charter J.L. Mann Northwestern Pickens St. James St. Joseph's Wando

Another issue that has to be addressed is the fact that the Clash openly solicited assistance with transportation during the spring which evolved into desperate pleas entering the week of the Clash. Since not one Lowcountry school or soccer program stepped up to provide a bus for June 26-27, the Clash had to find and rent a bus in the 11th-hour: literally on Thursday morning en route to Daniel Island. Fortunately, a former Brookland-Cayce HS and College of Charleston soccer alum, Jabari Seabrook, owns and operates a limousine service in Charleston, " Top Notch Transportation". Though he was able to give the SCHSSCA a break in the cost of the deal, it still cost the Clash $1,000 for Friday afternoon/evening and Saturday morning service. Believe me, that $1,000 could have been applied in a better manner than having to rent a school bus for less than one day. So, if your school or soccer program can assist the Clash in the future, we would gladly accept that "in kind donation" of what we consider a $500 contribution (school district bus rental/driver's pay = $250 per bus). I do want to recognize the following coaches that responded to our "pleas" for help on the transportation matters that have been instrumental in the past for securing these services: Stephen Jackson of West Ashley HS and Shilo Tisdale of Wando HS. Both of these coaches knew of our plight and helped willingly while driving their own soccer teams to their respective summer camps that same week. In closing, we as an Association have to do a better job of serving ourselves when it comes to the All-Star Games: North-South Soccer Classic and the Clash of the Carolinas.
