High School Soccer Media -
CARY, NC - The 13th annual Clash of the Carolinas was held Saturday, June 29 in Cary, North Carolina. North Carolina edged South Carolina 1-0 in the girls' contest, while the Tar Heels and Sandlappers battled to a 2-2 draw in the boys' game.
It was a "chamber of commerce" type day in The Triangle as clear skies and temperatures in the low 90s proved to be a perfect complement to WakeMed Soccer Park's Koka Booth Stadium, which is in immaculate condition.
The Clash, which has been staged every Summer since 2007, is the only interstate all-star prep soccer event of its kind nationally and recognizes 72 graduated seniors and eight coaches. The matches are co-hosted by the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association and the South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association.
Eveleen Hahn of Charlotte Catholic tallied North Carolina's only goal of the girls' match when she knocked home a double-assist from Heritage's Hayley Boyles and Providence Day's Marissa Hart in the 59th minute past South Carolina goalkeeper Lauren Riehm of Dutch Fork, who collected five saves on 18 Tar Heel shots. South Carolina registered 12 shots on goal while North Carolina net-minders, Kerry Eagleston of West Forsyth and Tuscola's Sarah Swain, combined for nine saves with four and five, respectively. Each side attempted four corner kicks as the Tar Heels improved its lead in the series to 10-1-2 with its' fourth consecutive victory. The Sandlappers only victory came in 2008. Hart earned Most Valuable Player honors for N.C., and Lindsay White of J.L. Mann collected those accolades for S.C.
It was end-to-end action in the boys' match as the two teams combined for 34 shots and 12 corner kicks in a 2-2 slugfest that went right down to the wire. South Carolina opened the scoring in the 28th minute when River Bluff's Peyton Miller took advantage of an errant back pass by a Tar Heel defender and slipped past goalkeeper Ali Cavagnaro of New Hanover to deposit the ball into an open net. However, the lead was short-lived as North Carolina rallied for two late first half goals. The first score came one minute after the Sandlappers' goal when Carmel Christian's Praise Kabwe knocked home a good build-up attack from Walker Gillespie of Charlotte Country Day. Then, just three minutes from intermission, Emmanuel Petrov of Ravenscroft finished a great opportunity to give the Tar Heels a 2-1 halftime advantage. The game would remain that way until the 68th minute when Michael Chappelar of May River crafted a wonderful goal when he zigged-zagged through the North Carolina defense and rocketed home the equalizer. Both teams had several chances near the end but the match ended in a stalemate with honors even. Petrov and Chappelear earned MVP honors for each side, respectively. The draw was the second in the past three years yet the Tar Heels still hold a commanding 7-1-5 advantage in the series.
