CAYCE, SC -- Honors were even at The Cage on Saturday as the 2006 Varsity squad rallied for a 1-1 draw vs. the Alumni in the Third Biennial Alumni Match for Brookland-Cayce High School. The result keeps the series even at 1-1-1 as the Varsity won the inaugural match in 2002 and the Alumni captured the 2004 event.
On a cold and wet day in Cayce, 1994 graduate Alex Koutrakos put the alums ahead in the 12th minute with a goal on a double assist from Thomas Mann ('02) and Jeffrey Horton ('01). The match remained a one goal advantage for the Alumni squad until senior Les Sonefeld rocketed home a 35-yard direct kick into the upper-90 of the goal for the equalizer with just 45 seconds remaining in the match. Needless to say, the drama of the moment was captured by a bench-clearing celebration for the Varsity squad and left the Alumni team looking around in awe.
The Alumni team was paced by current Charleston Battery midfielder Troy Lesesne ('01), Thomas Mann ('02), and Tristen Seabrook ('05). Others playing and attending the match included: 2004 - Senad Ademovic; 2002 - Biff Blocker, Paul Hilderbrand, Cory Smith; 2001 - Jason Evans, Jeffrey Horton; 1999 - Brian Horton, Clint Smith; 1998 - Garrett Bailey, David Faulkenberry, Justin Fraley; 1997 - Benjie Poston; 1995 - Will Eudy; 1993 - Trevor Dunlap; 1989 - Chris Collins, Kevin Heise, Kyle Heise, Jim Koutrakos, Jorn Steinmoen; and 1980 - Chuck Davis.
