Also, currently the High School League requires you play 11 players if you have them. Club soccer does not have this requirement.

How about the SCHSL saying that you have to have at least 6 field players on at a time no matter how many players you have.

This would be the best way to keep scores down. Then, if a coach sees a game getting out of control, he can go to 10, 9, 8, etc players. If he chooses to keep all 11 players in, then we can discuss his ethics but as it stands, he does not have the opportunity to play short handed.

TVOR, you make some excellent points, as usual. I'm not sure I understand all the aspects of scheduling opponents. With the regions and classifications (A-AAAA) set the way they are, schools have to schedule games against teams in their respective regions, don't they? The regions are setup based upon school size and geography. Unfortunately, school size does not necessarily equate to parity on the soccer pitch. In our region, there is a school that could conceivably be "blown out" in every region game they play this year. In fact, they've discontinued their boys program, probably because they got tired of the humiliation. Other AAAA regions have schools like this. Why can't the school petition the SCHSL to move them to another classification other than AAAA for soccer? That way, they could maintain some dignity while they grown their program back into contention.

The high school league requires you to play 11 players if you have them? Where is this rule stated?

It appears that blow-outs are going to be a reality for some time to come in certain matchups, so the bottom line is to coach and play with as much class and sportsmanship as possible in those situations.

the high school league requires that you play 11 if you have them. Then your next sentence says that you must have at least 6 field players on at a time.

What is the difference? If you have 11 players on would that not cover the 6 field players??????

If you reread VORs comments, the first sentence is a statement of fact (as he understands it): "Also, currently the High School League requires you play 11 players if you have them."

Then he says, "How about the SCHSL saying that you have to have at least 6 field players on at a time no matter how many players you have."

I believe he's making a suggestion here, not stating fact. A question mark as punctuation may have aided understanding of intent.

I have no idea whether or not the HSL requires 11. I'm pretty sure I've seen player reductions in the types of games we're discussing here. Can someone clarify this?

Got it. I thought he was stating 2 facts, did not read it too openly I guess. I have never heard of the HSL not allowing a team to play with fewer than 11 if they are present. Seems a coach should be able to play with less if he/she so chooses. But you know the HSL lets numerous questionable actions take place.

I referee and coach and I know of no rule that prohibits a team from playing with less then 11 players.

In the NFSHSA 2004-05 Soccer Rules book:

Rule 3, Art. 1 on page 14: "The game shall be played by two teams, each consisting of NOT MORE THAN 11 players..."

Rule 3, Art. 2 on page 15: "A game shall not be started with fewer than seven properly uniformed players on each team. After the game is started, it may not be continued with fewer than seven players on either team."

There is no mention of whether are not there are more players available on the bench, just that you must have at least 7 and no more than 11 on the field.

We've jumped on teams and had to drop players off the field. After taking yet another off the official said, "Coach, you have to have at least seven."

I believe that is the enforced version.
