Furman Clips College of Charleston, Earns First SoCon Victory 2-1

Charleston, S.C. -- Furman netted two first half goals and limited Charleston to just seven shots on its wa to a 2-1 Southern Conference victory over the Cougars Tuesday evening at Patriots Point Field in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

Paladin freshman Brian Martin, who earned SoCon Player-of-the-Week honors last week, received a Shea Salinas corner kick and beat Cougar goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap at the 33:34 mark to break a 1-1 tie. The goal, Martin’s
fourth of the year, would turn out to be the eventual game-winner.

Salinas gave Furman the early 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. Josh Villalobos served a corner kick into the box that Mark Futrell passed on to Salinas. The forward sailed a shot into the upper corner out of he reach of Gilstrap to open the scoring.

The Cougars sprung Jeremy Gold on a breakaway at 18:52 and the Charleston forward beat keeper Bryan Amos to the left to knot the match at 1-1 before Martin’s match-winner 15 minutes later.

The Paladins held a 12-7 edge in shots and 7-5 adavantage in corner kicks. Gilstrap stopped six shots for the Cougars while Amos was forced to make just one save in 90 minutes of work.

The win improves Furman to 3-4-4 overall and 1-1-0 in Southern Conference play. The College of Charleston falls to 5-4-2 overall and 1-1-0 in league play.

Furman, winners of three of its last four matches, returns home to Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium to host SoCon rival Georgia Southern Friday at 7 p.m.
