SPARTANBURG -- The South girls scored on their first shot in Saturday's North-South Soccer Classic at USC Upstate. Advertisement
The North then battled until the 83rd minute before drawing even in the teams' 1-1 tie at County University Stadium.
Lexington midfielder Allie Johns, named the MVP for the North, scored on a header to keep the North ahead in the series, 6-5-1.
"They scored minutes into the game, but they were the minutes that we needed to come together," said North midfielder Hannah Moseley of J.L. Mann. "Once that happened, we obviously did come together."
Randall Dominguez of Brookland-Cayce scored in the fifth minute to give the South a 1-0 advantage. The North then took control of the match, although the slim margin kept both teams inspired.
"I guess we're really competitive in this state for State Cup and high schools," said Riverside defender Lydia Calvage, who joined Warriors teammate Lindsay Patterson on the North squad. "Looking at the scoreboard, we had more shots (13-6), so I was just hoping (a goal) would be coming soon."
With 15 minutes left in the match, Johns had a chance right in front, but goalkeeper Alysha Strother of Dutch Fork made a kick save for the South.
Two minutes later, Ashleigh Sheets of Fort Mill shot from inside the box, but again, Strother made a kick save.
Johns, a Newberry College signee, finally beat Strother with 12 minutes remaining, floating a header to the back of the net.
The North girls had a scare in the final minute when a shot by Myrtle Beach's Michelle DiBartolo hit the right post and skittered across the front of the goal.
Wando midfielder Olivia Urig, a Charleston Southern recruit, was chosen MVP for the South.

SPARTANBURG -- Eastside graduate Walker Griffith spent the past couple days at his future school, USC Upstate. Advertisement
"It's good to get a little sneak peek at the field and the campus and everything," Griffith said.
It was also good to be on the winning side at County University Stadium, which Griffith hopes to repeat many times in the coming years.
Griffith, a USC Upstate signee, and the North rolled to a 3-1 victory Saturday in the 20th edition of the North-South boys all-star game.
"I think our guys went in kind of laid back," Griffith said. "It's an all-star game, and we didn't wanna take it too seriously. I think that's what made us play well together."
Eastside's David Craig, who coached the North along with Clinton's Sean Vick, said that was the plan.
"We told the guys, 'It's an honor for us to be here, but this is about you guys. Go out, have some fun and just play some soccer,' " Craig said. "It's good to see a group of kids with one day of practice put together a good performance and beat a good South squad."
Goals by twin brothers Ryan and Eric Fielden of Fort Mill -- the latter was his team's MVP -- gave the North a 2-1 halftime lead. Garrett Keogh of South Pointe added a goal for the North in the 51st minute.
Erik Jaramillo of Beaufort scored the South's goal. Myrtle Beach midfielder Chris Dixon, a Coastal Carolina recruit, was the MVP for the South.
Riverside goalkeeper Ian Rose made three saves in the second half for the North, which leads the series 13-5-2.
"We all got to know one another a little better than the other team," said Riverside's Chuck King. "Then once we came out here, we all enjoyed it and passed it around. It seemed like we had total control."

If a high school athlete is playing this weekend, they should feel honored.
Three different all-star events happen across the state, with softball, baseball and soccer having competitions between the best of the best.
There are a lot of local kids in these games. All have already graduated and many will play in college in the fall or spring.
It’s a testament to the coaching and support that these players get that they were named to the all-star games.
Here’s a rundown of who’s playing where today and Saturday:
Soccer all-star matches at USC Upstate: Spartanburg forward Anne Breeden, Dorman defender Tori Danielson, Dorman midfielder Michael Essman, Spartanburg forward Julia Harris
Congratulations to all the players and coaches selected to represent their schools in all-star games.
