Great article by Coach Reed in Soccer Today:
[http] https://www.soccertoday.com/coach-reed-on-our-soccer-players-deserve-better/ [/http]

Three quotes I am mulling over as it relates to local clubs. Parents and coaches should mull these over when considering where they work and/or place their children:

1."Underdeveloped coaching education leads to underdeveloped player/people education."

What does your club do to train its coaches? Does it have a coaching curriculum? Is this training evident in the quality and consistency across coaches and the attitudes/play of the children?

2."You can say your club is focused on player development, but can you show me the work?"

"What do you do to develop your coaches so they can properly develop your players? Technical and tactical skill development alone is not coach development. Underdeveloped coaching education leads to underdeveloped player/people education.

We don't want a list of results, either. Anyone can win a major youth championship if they get the pick of the litter."
SHOW US YOUR WORK

3."Fancy mission statements, slick elevator pitches, and club values posted on websites don’t show us the work."

Some use words like: Integrity; Sportsmanship; Fair Play. Yet when we look at their work we see dishonesty, secrecy and exclusion.

These are children we are teaching these lessons to. When your children grow to become adults, what do you want them to have learned from the adults you surrounded them with?

"Coach Reed believes that there are a lot of people in the youth soccer industry looking to profit from the $17 billion who are not qualified to do the work they claim, who are advancing archaic or outdated practices or practices not supported by science and who do more damage than good because they don’t solve any issues."

So many clubs throw around "Academy" or "Junior Academy" or "Technical Director" or "Director of Coaching" and they are just names on a business card. If you look at their resume or you look at how the clubs actually function day-to-day you will see the reality:

"Great read and points to consider as a parent. I would suggest to ask clubs how often, or if, the DOCs evaluate and help train their coaches. Many clubs are just a collection of teams/coaches on their own islands. If you get a bad coach, it can be a painful experience."
