Woodruff dominated most of the game, but the lid was on the goal during regulation. Missed several breakaways forward vs the keeper and most some open goals. They came out in overtime and put two goals in in 3 minutes. Woodruff has now improved to 6-0 in AA-Region 2, and needs one more win for the region title. Good game to all players.

Gilbert 8, Saluda 3

Gil 4-2 at halftime

Saluda goals: Julio Torres 2 (3rd, 4th), Jose Martinez(15th)
Saluda assists: Armando Leyva (2nd), Arturo Reyna (4th)

Saluda fought hard and cut it to 4-3 in the 2nd half but Gilbert's two scorers (Cedillo and Yuhas) were just too much. Don't underestimate Gilbert in the 2A playoffs.
Two coaches ejected? Wow.
It's alright, we have coaches to spare
and I thought those refs were "bought and paid" for...
Looks as if the officials are getting worse. How can you throw a coach out with two soft yellow cards that has over 300 wins. I'm not knocking all refs but some of these guys are clowns that were never good in athletics as a kid and now want to take it out on others. Let's stop penalizing the kids. On a side note, some of you referees that are reading this get bigger shorts and look better because its bad enough you stink as a ref but you make yourself look worse axe-murdering those shorts. Last week I was in the stands watching a game I had to turn my head cause I thought I was going to see something I didn't want to see.
Alright, Coach Chass your turn! Go ahead and weigh in like you always do!
Congratulations to BC on their win at Airport last night. It was a very hard fought match. I will say though, I don't see the necessity in showcasing your statistics over Airport in the last 20 years. As coaches as respected and dedicated as BC is, I don't think that is very classy.
freaky, the ref should've considered the win total of the coach before tossing him? interesting.

as for the refs in the game, absolutely pitiful. too many calls in a rivalry match. the 4 ejections were all for dissent. player/coach would get a card, then continue to complain instead of just letting it go.

either way, the pk given in the last 3 minutes was just as bad as the rest of the calls. pretty poor to let an official determine the winner.
and some of your players comments during the game toward the bench and coaches are...what? Could be heard up in the stands.

as were yours Ray. My post had nothing to do with players comments. Reread...
Actually, the first coach ejected was for inciting the crowd, the second opened his mouth and before he could say anything was ejected.
This center ref was on a power trip before the game had already started. When the BC boys were warming up behind the goal of their own JV keeper, the center came over and told them to move. They were a good 15 yards off the field and were closer to the track than they were on the field.
There is nothing to reread...just pointing out the levels of class demonstrated by Airfield.
There you go again, blaming the refs for every move. I think the reality is that airport is improving and closing the gap in your rivalry and it scares you. Enjoy your win but get your facts straight. Airport dominated the run of play. If it weren't for a good freekick and an undeserved pk you really had no other good chance. Don't forget the AHS goal that was called back in the very beginning of the match.
Me being on the outside looking in I would imagine that 300+ wins would qualify him to put a pos referee on notice for bad officiating. Looking at the stats that Lord Administrator of scsoccer.com dropped if Airport cared anything about their program they would have more than 1 win over Brookland Cayce since 1987. Stoke City comes to mind!
Freaky that was a very unfair and unwarranted thing to say about the Airport program. Let me tell you, this is my first year with the varsity team and I am dedicated to improving this soccer team and program as a whole. And if I didn't care I wouldn't be doing that. Don't forget, Rome wasn't built in a day. I am very proud of what we have accomplished this year. It's more than wins and loses.
Airport has made great strides in their program! They have a committed core of players and Coach Masone has done a good job of changing the mindset of the Eagle Soccer program. Airport will only continue to improve and that's good for soccer in general in the Cayce-West Columbia community. Good luck to Airport the remainder of the season and in the playoffs.
thanks coach and to you and your boys. nm
why was that goal called back for, did Airport call it off or did the refs. I hope you're not blaming the refs for that, because that would be similar to "There you go again, blaming the refs for every move"

You are right though, Airport is getting better. They have a coach and players who go out and try to get better. They play with heart and you can tell because they leave it on the field. You can see it in their faces after the game.

As far as BC being scared, not so much. BC is playing a whole lot of freshmen and sophmores with a few juniors and seniors. From what I can tell, Airport has a whole lot of juniors. BC won both matches this season, so no I don't think we're scared.
Airport dominated the field of play...debatable. 1st half no crap, 2nd half I don't think so. I thought it was pretty even and hard fought match. As it should be, it's a rivalry game and for 2nd in the region. Airport should be proud in the way they played and keep their heads up, you still have the playoffs.

Sam,

Let me explain my reason for posting the statistics I did last night following the match.

As a proud alumnus of Brookland-Cayce High School, a soccer player for the Bearcats in the 1980s, and a boys soccer coach at B-C since 1990, I take great pride in "Bearcat Soccer". Many of our Alumni read the SCSoccer.com Message Board and this just keeps them in the loop.

Now, on a personal note since you are in your first season with the Airport boys soccer program.

I grew up in the Cayce/West Columbia community and reside there today, I am always keen to see the Lexington School District Two schools (Airport and B-C) succeed academically and in athletics. Being a third-generation "Bearcat" and having been involved with B-C soccer in some form or fashion for almost 30 years, I take personal pride in the rivalry with Airport.

I was on the last team that lost to the Eagles twice in one year (1986) and that was a B-C team that started nine freshmen, including me. Since then, we have only lost one time to our sister school and that was a 1-0 loss at The Cage in 2002. There was one tie in a non-region contest in 1987. Everything else has been a "W" for the Maroon & Black.

Overall, B-C leads the series 48-13-4 (.769) and that dates back to the inaugural season of “Bearcat Soccer” in 1973-74. Since 1991 when my brother, Kevin, was elevated from Junior Varsity coach to Varsity coach, the tally reads 27-1-0!

And, you are darn right that I take great pride in those numbers!

There has been a lot of work by a lot of people that has gone into building “Bearcat Soccer” into a respected program on an annual basis. We have good kids and many of them grow up with the program as ball boys and during their time with the B-Team and JV squads. It means a lot to them to represent BCHS in a classy manner – on and off the pitch (i.e., four consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Awards). Maybe more importantly it means a lot to their families because they sincerely see the value that having a program their son/daughter/brother/sister can associate themselves with is a quality extra curricular activity that is a privilege and not a right. We ask a lot of our boys in this program and, in turn, try to provide them with the utmost prep soccer experience. The soccer pitch is just another classroom and venue to teach some of life’s lessons. Having pride in something you care deeply about is a learning tool as well.

I wish Airport High School and yourself nothing but the best in boys soccer. You have the program on the right track – and it’s a solid program (50-52-1 since 2005 under three coaches). We basically have the same type of kids and demographics but the one constant that AHS has never had in boys soccer is stability and any kind of tenure of quality leadership. I hope that you find the situation at AHS agreeable and that you can build your program a little more each year. In the end, everyone wins when there is quality competition in whatever field you are working in and your players deserve that opportunity. It’s up to the adults – even Athletic Directors that only think there is football, basketball, and baseball at AHS – to provide that type of environment.

In closing, I would like to add just a little advice. As valuable as club soccer is to a player’s development there is a time and a place for everything. I’m sure you are proud of coaching with Columbia United FC, just as I am as a board member with the Congaree Rapid Soccer Association. However, when it’s high school soccer season, concentrate on AHS and not CUFC.
once again a great post with an unnecessary ending. I am glad you are proud of your stats, I would be as well if I had them. The point of my post was not to say that "stats don't mean anything" but more that everyone in the BC community knows the stats vs. Airport, I don't see the necessity in rubbing it in. I don't see you post career records vs. any other team.

As far as Columbia United, I am very proud to coach there. I am focused on high school season obviously as I just stated in my previous post on this thread. That is just an unwarranted statement. But as far as I am concerned, that is a conversation for another day and therefore I see no need to post again on this thread. You can reply and banter if you want over clubs but like you said, it is high school season and I am concentrating on Airport High School. Good luck the rest of the season and congratulations again on last night.
man all this stuff is too heavy for me coming from a bunch of mid pack 3A's. Can we get back to the subject at hand: Northwestern vs. Irmo?
Subject is post scores that is it.

Great game last night by all, but the refs....
Bad no call in BC's box the first half. I didn't see the call against Airport, in the box, the 2nd half, but if it was a bad call....that makes it sort of even out.

By placing 3rd in the region Airport falls into one of the easier bracket and should make it to at least the Lower State semis.
Good Luck to Airport...and of course Good Luck to BC

Now that my friends is a classy post. Rather than all that "your mama - no your mama" junk that was going on earlier in the day. Play each other as hard as you can for everything it's worth - but at the end of the day you live in the same community. You probably go to church together, do business together, have played sports together and in some cases are probably kin to each other - leave it on the field with the boys where it belongs. I don't have a dog in this fight but thanks again He Takes Pictures for a classy post.

As an administrator (although primarily on the "Information Technology" side of things), when we post we put our names out there for everyone to see. That is seldom seen elsewhere throughout the realm of SCSoccer.com forums. That being said, anonymity is waived. I would hope that people viewing this see and understand this, and hold a bit of respect for these folks. We put our opinion out there, and unwarranted personal criticism can often follow.

One more thing to add, though, which Kyle did not allude to in the earlier post: the year AHS did topple BCHS in The Cage, against the eventual AAA state runner-up Bearcats, Kyle (as always, win or lose) reported the result to The State newspaper. In the agate section that day, Kyle posted a congratulatory remark that it was Airport's first win in almost 15 years, and it was just that: congratulations. How many programs do that? Many programs throughout the state in ANY sport do things like 'turn of scoreboards', 'turn off field lights', or fail to post disappointing results or report them to the media -- especially against heated rivals? Think about it. Remember some USC vs. Clemson football road games?

The Eagles have fielded one of their better sqauds in recent memory, and Coach Masone has shown a commitment to improve the Eagles program in the proper manner. And the opportunity in front of them to finish on a great note is huge. Best of luck to them in their remaining fixtures.

Kyle's comments then (2002), now (above), and in the future are simply historical fact. I also believe that club soccer has its place, as well as HS soccer. I, too, am proud to be involved (although not as much since my children were born) in both HS and Club soccer. It would be my suggestion to work away from the tension sensed in this thread. But that is why this opportunity, SCSoccer.com, is out there: to give the fans a chance to discuss their feelings -- a FORUM. I'm just thankful to be a part of it, and that we have it at all.

Keep up the good work, folks, and never lose sight that this is for the kids.

What an intense match!! Extremely poor job by both referees. The Palmetto boys played extremely physical soccer to the point of living in a world of fouls. Woodruff has their moments but overall dirty play to the point of Palmetto team members flipping off the crowd and standing in the middle of the field calling on Woodruff to start a fight. Poor sportsmanship on their behalf.

The Woodruff boys kept their cool and came out victorious overall. A great season for the WHS boys’ varsity team with two games left and one being a region match.

What a very physical game, one team fighting to stay healthy and to clinch a play-off spot and the other playing for Sheer(sp?) pride for thier senior night. Good sportsmanship on the lancaster side tempers flared a few times for both teams but in the end, the best part of the game in my opinion both teams congradulated each other on a good game and walked off knowing they left it all on the field.

I have to agree completly the refs let the game get out of hand. I agree with playing physical but there is a difference between playing physical and playing dirty. For the most part Woodruff kept their cool tonight, but Palmetto was going after knees and ankles. One game is not worth losing your high school season.

Overall good performance by both teams, and this win clinches Woodruff as the 2009 AA Region-II champions. Congrats boys, now finish the season strong going into play-offs.

A Rock Hill win most certainly did give them the region championship, very tight games this year by all teams in the region and a early congrats to Rock Hill good luck against Northwestern and with play-offs. They still have to play a very talented South Pointe team but from what i hear one of thier good starters recieved a Red in the game against Ridge View and will not be able to play. Watch out for the upset.
Who is this Jafet Vera for Dillon? What club does he play for? This young man seems to be quite the finisher.
He does not play any club ball. He plays for Dillon's Rec traveling team which did quite well across the state. He's a rising senior who works extremely hard and has a nice touch with the ball.

The kid can play. He's been banged up and played sparingly the last three matches in which he had not scored before last night's match. He also is a backup keeper and has not given up a goal thus far this season. I am putting him up for all-state this year.
Thanks, good to hear. Sounds like a good player. I wish him the best.
Thanks. Our schedule is soft which gives him inflated numbers, but, the kid can still play. I hope he makes it. Next year we are going to try and schedule up so we can all get tested against better competition.

@ Colleton County:

CC 2
Berkeley 1
Wren 7-1 Laurens

Halftime

Wren 3-Laurens 1

Laurens scored early and was shut down with only a few errant attempts at shots on goal in the 2nd half. Two teams going in opposite directions.

Laurens has an awesome field and deserves more support from their fans.
Can someone tell me what happened at the latest Palmetto soccer game for the varsity boys? Lots of negative rumors out here!

Thanks.
Congrats to Rock Hill for their first ever region title, it was a very interesting region this year with alot of close games including close losses and close wins decided in pk's. Rock Hill's two setbacks in the region were both early in the season to a upset-minded Blythewood bunch and a very strong Spring Valley squad. Best of luck to all of the region IV teams playing in the playoff's.

Batesburg-Leesville 10, Saluda 0

Halftime: B-L 7-0

B-L is as good as advertised. The Saluda team played hard for 80 minutes but is just not on the same level. B-L scored in the first 28 seconds and this match was never close to being competitive.
