Watching the Airtricity XI vs. Celtic FC match in the Dublin Super Cup and neat to see former Norman North HS (OK) goalkeeper Dom Cervi (Tulsa) tending the net for Celtic.

Wow this is neat to see. I truly wish"The Bhoys" had similar talent to the 67 "Lisbon Lions". It is obviously a small world. Thanks for sharing!
Still some spots available - teams committed are listed above.
Norman North-OK has committed to the 2012 Palmetto Cup. This will be the Timberwolves 10th trip to the Palmetto Cup and NN has compiled a 26-10-2 (.711) overall tourney mark and captured titles in 2000, 2004, and 2005.
2-4 spots available for the 2012 Palmetto Cup.

There are still some spots available for the 2012 Palmetto Cup. Would like to field a 12-team tourney.
The Palmetto Cup currently has 9 teams committed for 2012. This tournament is shaping up to be one of the most competitive, if not the most since the tournaments inception in 1993. Four of the teams finished as state champions in 2011 and all were ranked in the Massey Power Ratings Top 25 from last season!

We are looking for 1-3 teams to complete the tournament field. Teams must be available to participate April 11-14, 2012. For more information, please contact me at kheise@lex2.org

We are excited about the quality of our field for 2012. It seriously appears to be the best tournament field ever!

We have a contingency commitment with another team from Canada, but would need to be able to offer their girls' team matches while they are here. Also, that would give us 11 teams and we would like to have a balanced tourney of 12 teams if indeed we could land the Canadian side. If your team is interested in attending the 2012 Palmetto Cup -- GREAT COMPETITION!!! -- please let me know as soon as possible, so that we may work on facilitating their request.
A bunch of hosers, eh?
Cool!

If you have ten teams and everyone plays 4 games, why would there not be 2 groups of 5 where 1st place of each group advances to the championship? Doesn't make sense to do random scheduling.

Totally agree that this would have been the easiest way to bracket this year's Palmetto Cup, but:

* due to four teams not being on Spring Break and needing night matches;
* working with our non-SC teams and their travel needs;
* ensuring as many teams get to see different opposition;
* trying to accommodate team's opponents in respect to previous Palmetto Cup appearances;
* making it as balanced as possible for "even" possibilities to qualify for the Championship;
* etc.;

solid top to bottom. Should be a great week of soccer.
ASI looks to be pretty solid as well. Great work from the Lex 2 schools!
upvote for you sir
Knox West HS (TN) has withdrawn from the Palmetto Cup. We are looking for one team to replace them ASAP. If you are interested/available, please contact coach Kevin Heise at kheise@lex2.org.
I wish Irmo would compete in this tournament , why don't they?
Be careful what you wish for!!
I second that wish! Do we hear a third?
Third. Then it must be true.
Rumor is that Irmo will be entering the Palmetto Cup
Irmo will be accepting the spot vacated by Knox-West and looks forward to the tournament! Also, many thanks to Kevin Heise for working with us on the scheduling since we are not on spring break that week and are coming in late to this. Also, thanks to Ridge View and Blythewood for agreeing to re-schule region matches this late in the season.

The Palmetto Cup is excited to welcome Coach Savitz and Irmo to the 2012 tournament field. Our schedule will need to be tinkered with a bit in order to facilitate the Yellow Jackets entry.

Thanks to Coach John Donohue (Ridge View) and Peter Wittig (Blythewood) for working with Irmo on their region rescheduling.

The 20th Annual Palmetto Cup will be held in Cayce April 11-14.
Wow! That is all I have to say about the tourney this year. Can't wait to make my annual pilgrimage across the river (except for some trips to Maurice's BBQ) for a solid week of soccer. Looking forward to seeing Irmo, Wando, etc.
COLA FAN IS A R-A-Y-S-I-S RAYSIS!
Well it is only fitting that the 20th Anniversary edition of the Palmetto Cup may very well be the most talented field yet. Great job Kevin and Kyle and thanks for including us!
Very Happy to have Irmo in the tournament. Will match opponents be changed at all?
Wow, can't wait to see these potential match ups with all these Great teams, glad to see Irmo finally manning up!
If you are interested in placing an advertisement in the Palmetto Cup tournament program, please contact coach Kevin Heise at kheise@lex2.org. We are accepting advertisement through March 22, 2012.
The revised Palmetto Cup schedule is now updated in the previous schedule post in this thread.

We worked very hard to honor all requests, but there were many factors at work in this process. We hope that you understand and respect that issue.

Two paper billboards (Huger St./Greene St. and Sunset Blvd., Hwy. 378 @ the Boat Shop) are on display now as well as a rotating digital board on Blossom St. The 20th Annual Palmetto Cup will be played at Brookland-Cayce High School, April 11-14.

Nice comments about some teams competing next week in the prestigious Palmetto Cup hosted by Brookland-Cayce High School, April 11-14 in Cayce, S.C.

2012 POWERADE FAB 50 Spring Boys Rankings

#1 Irmo, 11-0 - When Irmo returns from spring break next week, it faces its greatest challenge to a No. 1 ranking -- playing No. 38 Northwestern, Christ Church, No. 6 Cardinal Newman and No. 19 Norman North (Norman, Okla.) on consecutive days at the Palmetto Cup.

#6 Cardinal Newman, 10-0 - Cardinal Newman defeated South Aiken 3-2 last week in a battle of nationally ranked undefeated teams. South Aiken then lost later in the week and fell completely from the rankings. Newman, meanwhile, inches a few spots higher in an anticipation of an April 13 clash with No. 1 Irmo.

#19 Norman North, 5-0 - Brandon Little Axe scored four goals last week as Norman North continued its undefeated season.

#21 Fort Mill, 10-1 - Fort Mill, the state's top-ranked Class AAA team, defeated Northwestern, one of the state's top Class AAAA programs, 2-0 last week.

#38 Northwestern, 9-2

#48 Wando, 11-2

2012 Palmetto Cup Schedule
The 20th Annual Palmetto Cup kicks off tomorrow in Cayce, South Carolina. This year's field is outstanding and the weather forecast looks good.

However, we have already had a bump in the road as we were informed via the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) that Norman North will only be allowed to participate in three tourney matches per OSSAA rules. Thus, Norman North has agreed to forfeit their first match tomorrow night versus Christ Church and will simply travel to SC on Wednesday. We will move the Fort Mill vs. Wando match (originally scheduled for 6:30 pm at Granby Education Center) to The Cage at BCHS at 8:00 pm.

Norman North will compete on Thursday (vs. Northwestern), Friday (vs. Bishop England), and Saturday (vs. Irmo) as scheduled, but will not be eligible for the championship match Saturday afternoon if indeed the TimberWolves should advance.

Parking -- Buses parking at The Cage are to use the space between State Street Baptist Church and the stadium. Signs are posted directing you to do so. At Granby, buses will be allowed to park behind the school building on the small access road off Dunbar Road. No spectators will be allowed to park there. Also, there is no parking for visitors at Granby in front of the house on the corner of Wilkinson Street & Dunbar Road. Spectator parking at BCHS is restricted to the area outside the brick gateway. There is ample parking in the lots off State Street and behind the softball field off L Avenue and 7th Street.

Seating -- At Granby, there is very limited seating, so please encourage your supporters to bring folding chairs, etc. At The Cage, all spectators are to sit on the press box side. The small "visitors" side on the teams side is reserved for tourney personnel and teams waiting to play.

Concessions -- At Granby, there will be limited items for sale. The Cage will have a full canteen available, plus Zeus Pizza!

Restrooms -- At Granby, there is a Port-A-John as well as indoor facilities (follow the sidewalk around the building). At The Cage, the restrooms are available at the canteen building.

Inclement Weather -- At Granby, in the event of inclement weather, teams will be allowed to huddle in the gymnasium, but must take their cleats off. At The Cage, if inclement weather occurs, teams will be moved a locker room or the small gym.

Warming Up -- Teams are asked to warm up behind either goal or on the softball field outfield or baseball field outfield (after Wednesday). There should be no warm-ups on the infield. Also, we ask that you conduct as many of your warming up outside of the goal mouths at both facilities. Teams should have about 20 minutes on the field for pregame warm-ups.

Practice -- If you are traveling from out of town, please consider using Granby Education Center soccer field or Northside Middle School soccer fields for practices. Also, there is the BCHS Annex Field on campus (no goals) if you should need it.

Team Benches -- Light Colored Jersey Teams will occupy the Home bench (team shelter end, B-C as host will always use this end). Dark Colored Jersey Teams will use the team bench closest to the scoreboard end of The Cage. Please make sure to clean up after your match and leave the area clean.

Trainers -- The trainers will ONLY be available at BCHS. All taping, etc. must be done at BCHS (make arrangements). Please allow an hour before your scheduled kickoff to address this issue. We will have water provided for you at both sites.

Checking In -- All teams should first check in at BCHS to get their t-shirts, game ball, coach's package, etc. Also, if you owe an outstanding balance for entry fee or t-shirts, please pay at this time.

Format -- 80 minute matches. Two 40-minute halves continuous clock; 7-minute halftime. Forfeits are recorded as 3-0 wins for tourney scoring purposes only (10 points maximum). Points System: 6 points for a win; 3 points for a tie; 1 point for every goal to three; 1 point for a shutout; 0 points for a loss; -2 points for a straight red card; -1 points for an accumulated red card. There is NO overtime. Matches after 80 minutes end in a tie except for the Championship which will be determined by SCHSL Regular Season Rules (Two 5-minute overtimes; Penalty Kicks).

Finally, if you can let the programs who video know, we are always looking for Goal of the Week candidates. We have this week covered already, but if any great goals are scored this weekend, we'd love to have the video file to put that in consideration for future Goals of the Week.

No, the state rules by the OSSAA have not changed and according to Mike Clark, who joined the organization three years ago, Norman North has been in violation of the rules for quite some time. However, other schools and sports have operated under the same understanding as NN did in boys soccer and have been granted waivers. A teleconference is scheduled for this morning and we should know more by noon.

Why schedule a school that is in session with an 8p game?

That is the way it worked out.

Really see no difference in matches that start at 7:30 or 8 p.m. Match will be over around 9:40 and FMHS should be home around 11 or 11;30 (about 1:15-1:30 hour drive) from Cayce to Fort Mill. Irmo and Northwestern are in school this week as well. Would have been the same for NHS.

Really no biggie. Just play!
It is 12:00 p.m., and we are live at The Cage for the 20th Annual Palmetto Cup hosted by Brookland-Cayce High School. The current temperature is 61 degrees with an 8-10 mph wind from the northwest. Nothing but blue skies in Cayce!

We will post box scores at the conclusion of each match in this thread. Norman North HS has landed in Columbia and will use today as a travel day since the TimberWolves have had to forfeit tonight's match with Christ Church. In lieu of that forfeiture, the Fort Mill/Wando contest scheduled for 6:30 p.m., at Granby Education Center has been moved to 8 p.m., at The Cage - making all four opening day matches on the campus of BCHS.

Teams are asked to check-in upon arrival at The Cage to pick up your team's tournament box of T-Shirts, program, bags, etc.

We're underway at The Cage. Fifteen minutes have been played. Lexington controlled the first 6 minutes and put three shots on the board. But the Bearcats warmed up and have since fired four towards the twine, two of which were on goal. Here are the starting lineups for B-C vs. Lexington.

In the 20th minute, the Wildcats' Hunter Bailey was on the receiving end of a brilliant diagonal pass from Daniel Bretz, taking a shot from the left angle of the box. B-C GK Grant Strickland made the save and the loose ball was cleared by the defense. The Bearcats countered after an offsides call negated a Wildcat goal, with three shots off of two corners -- one of which narrowly missed the right post. On 24', still 0-0 with shots 8 to 5 for the host Bearcats.
Let's go IRMO bring it home boys.
GOAL!!! Brookland-Cayce 1:0 Lexington

Almost a half hour has been played in today's first match, and BCHS capitalizes on what appeared to be a Lexington own goal on 28:50 to make it 1:0 Brookland-Cayce. Jalin Butler makes a Rory Delap like throw to put the ball squarely in the area.
Halftime - Brookland-Cayce 1:0 Lexington

After a sluggish opening ten minutes for the host Bearcats, most of the next 30 minutes belonged to B-C. Brookland-Cayce holds a 12-5 advantage in shots, and have had 5 corner kicks to the Wildcats' one. Three fouls have been whistled against Lexington, while the Bearcats have been penalized once.

Goals: (B-C) Own Goal 29'
Assists: (B-C) Jalin Butler.

Officials: (R) Jason Kent, (AR) Scott Flicker, (AR) Marion Shull.
Weather: Clear, 65 Degrees.
Just over a quarter of an hour played in the second half with the score still standing at B-C 1, Lexington 0. B-C have a 2 shots to 1 advantage thus far this frame. The Bearcats have the wind at their back, and it has picked up -- now gusting at around 18-20 mph. While still clear and sunny, it has dropped a couple degrees at The Cage.
Herbert Cojulun shows great hustle just after the hour as he tracks down a ball destined for the end line, stops it on a dime and sends a ball across the six. Lexington defender David Enzastiga gets a boot on the ball, but it trickles just outside the area where Bearcat midfielder Gustavo Gonzaga fires a beauty towards the frame. The ball cleared the crossbar by a foot, and we're once again in open play.
B-C keeps the pressure on, and a nice ball across the area finds midfielder David Koprowski. His quick shot is stopped by netminder Parton, and the Wildcats counter. Forward Jared Eller beats the defense and looks to be in position to equalize. But B-C's Strickland handles the point blank shot to thwart the effort just before crossing the goal line. Ten to play, B-C 1, Lexington 0.
GOAL!!! Brookland-Cayce 2:0 Lexington

B-C's Herbert Cojulun breaks at the right time on a ball from Tyler Brazell and Aaron Davis and fires a 20 yard shot over Wildcat goalie Jacob Parton for a 2-0 lead on 75'. Wildcats looked for an offsides call from AR Marion Shull, but the Bearcat had timed his run perfectly and the call appeared correct.
FULL-TIME -- Brookland-Cayce 2:0 Lexington

The host Bearcats hold on to keep the shutout and garner 9 points in match-opener of the 20th Annual Palmetto Cup.

Match two is underway at The Cage in the 20th Annual Palmetto Cup, and it has all the makings of a good one. (Don't they all)? SCISA AAA #1 Cardinal Newman (10-0-0) takes on SCHSL AA #1 Bishop England (13-2-1). Ten minutes have been played, with the Cardinals owning a slight advantage in the run of play. CN has two shots on target thus far, while the Bishops have yet to put it on frame. Here are the starting lineups:

GOAL!!! Bishop England 1:0 Cardinal Newman (22')

The Bishops battle back and big mo switches sides as B-E starts taking it to the Cardinals, outworking the #1 ranked and defending SCISA AAA champions. Forward Michael Reifeis lays it off to his counterpart Brian Byrne who hammers it past goalkeeper Thomas Wilczewski to take a 1-0 advantage. Shots are now 6-3 in favor of Bishop England. But CN are working hard, and we are once again experiencing open play.
Halftime - Bishop England 1:0 Cardinal Newman

The Cardinals nearly even it up with two shots and two corners in the last three minutes of the first half. As the second half gets underway, a ball in the area not cleared sat inside the six and waited inticingly for Jack Sicker to finish. The hammer failed to drop, though, and it went low and wide a foot to the right of the post.
GOAL!!! Bishop England 1:1 Cardinal Newman

Wofford signee and Cardinal senior Nestor Jaramillo puts the Redbirds from Forest Drive on the scoreboard with the equalizer. The hammer dropped from 12 yards on 44', and Bishop netminder Ross Rogers had no chance to stop this one. A real no-doubter. Play is solid in both directions, with the CN holding a slim 9-8 advantage on shots.
One hour played in The Cage as match number two continues to be a very hard-fought, evenly played event. Nestor fired away from just outside the area and looked to be goal-bound. But a defender leaped up and managed to deflect the potential shot to the six near the far post. Thomas Touma's flick on was handled by Bishop goalkeeper Rogers, and it remains even at 1-1.
GOALS!!! Bishop England 1:3 Cardinal Newman

The Cardinals jump out in front on 66' off of their 9th corner kick as Cam Parker lofts it into the box and Jacob August heads it past Ross Rogers, denying him his 7th save. The defender was there, but failed to put a body on August. While typing this entry "and this match is far from over", University of South Carolina-bound and national team member Koty Millard gets free and hammers it home for what may be the match-winner on 70'.
Full Time -- Bishop England 1:3 Cardinal Newman

The class of the independent schools holds on to take 9 points and their 11th win of the season, defeating their liturgical rivals from Daniel Island. Shots were 15-12 in favor of the Redbirds, but the Battling Bishops lived up to their name until the whistle sounded on 80'. The Bishops earn 1 point for their efforts.

GOALS!!! Irmo 2:0 Northwestern (7', 11')

One shot, one goal. Irmo midfielder Andrew Foard is on the receiving end of a tap back inside the six from Josh Jenkins to quickly put the nation's #1 ranked Yellow Jackets on top. Before we could finish the post, a throw-in which was mishandled results in an own goal.
GOAL!!! Irmo 3:0 Northwestern (15')

The Yellow Jackets continue their onslaught against the Rock Hill powerhouse. A Matt Manter corner kick finds Josh Jenkins, who adds a goal to his assist by heading it in from inside the goalie box after just a quarter of an hour in The Cage. Four shots deliver three on goal and in for the perennially competitive, Phil Savitz led Irmese.
GOAL!!! Irmo 4:0 Northwestern (27')

Hmm, there's a repeating element to today's third match as five Irmo shots produce four goals. Irmo's Caleb Jenkins makes the most of his being on the receiving end of a deflected corner kick. He burys his shot to put the Trojans in a very big hole on 27 minutes.
GOAL!!! Irmo 4:1 Northwestern (40')

A ball handled in the area results in a spot kick for the Trojans. Senior midfielder Nate Torbett hits a low shot to Jacket goalie Raad Wuulner's right, as he guessed right. But it was just out of his reach, caroming into the back of the net off the post. It's halftime in The Cage for today's third match, with Irmo well in front having out shot Northwestern by 6 shots to 2.
Owwwtch! Northwestern Senior defender Mohit Gupta is kicked below the shin inside the Irmo area and immediately falls to the ground in anguish. The trainers are quickly beckoned on by referee Dustin Thorne, and the mobile phone is immediately pulled out by the staff to request assistance. It does not look good for the Trojan, and play has been halted to handle the situation on 44 minutes.
GOAL!!! Irmo 5:1 Northwestern (44')

Gupta is taken away on a stretcher and then by ambulance after a 28 minute delay. Our thoughts are with him for a speedy recovery. As play resumes, Irmo strikes quickly and senior midfielder Lewis Teeple hits a sidewinder off the outside of his left foot. Northwestern goalkeeper Hamp Wright cannot handle it and the Yellow Jackets add to their tally.
An hour played in match number three of the 2012 Palmetto Cup, and Northwestern is awarded a free kick just left of center eighteen. Defender Patrick Raad takes the kick with his left foot around the wall, but Irmo netminder Wullner is up to the task, moves slightly to his left and doesn't spill the save. Still 5-1 in favor of Irmo.
Penalty given! Irmo's goalkeeper fouls a Northwestern player in the area while trying to make a play on the ball. Jacob Youngblood steps to the spot, but Wullner once again guesses right. This time, though, he is up to the task and deflects it away and it is cleared out of bounds by defender Matt Freeman. It remains 5-1 to the state's #1 ranked AAAA team.
FT - Irmo 5:1 Northwestern

And that's that. The nation's number one ranked team takes care of the Trojans to take 9 points from the match while the Trojans nab one point. We'll try to stay on-time after the lengthy delay due to Mohit Gupta's injury early in the second half.

GOAL!!! Fort Mill 0:1 Wando (9')

The Warriors draw first blood as defender Trent Rieflin puts Wando in front. The USC-bound Senior takes the first free kick of the match from 19 yards and it whistles by everyone to find the back of the net in the ninth minute.
Last we heard, unofficially and overheard from a parent who was heading to Palmetto Richland, it was believed that he had fractured his leg. He appeared to be as OK as one could be given the circumstances.

Action from end to end in the 20th Annual Palmetto Cup as on the stroke of halftime, Wando's Andrew Davis fouls and is shown yellow for the match's only caution thus far. Not for long, though, as Warrior's coach Shilo Tisdale is also booked for dissent after the call. The free kick is taken but sails far over the crossbar as the halftime whistle is blown by referee Farris Griffin. The score remains 1-0 in favor of Wando despite shots being even at 3 apiece.
Second half action is underway, and we've played nearly a quarter-hour with the score still 1-0 in favor of Wando. The
Warriors have had the better of the play in the match thus far, and have put three more shots on the frame -- two of which required a Yellow Jacket save. Goalkeepers changed for each team for the final 40 minutes.
GOAL!!! Fort Mill 1:1 Wando (56')

So much for the run of play comment! Kevin Fielden, senior midfielder for the Jackets, explodes forward with a burst of speed and puts himself in. As Wando netminder Hunter Greer comes forward off his line to cut the angle, Fielden lets loose with a 12 yard strike which goes under the outward-rushing Greer for the equalizer. Once again, it's end-to-end action in tonight's nightcap.
Just over an hour played in tonight's nightcap, and it remains 1-1. Wando are ahead on shots 7-4 and have tallied 5 corners to Fort Mill's one.
GOAL!!! Fort Mill 1:2 Wando (71')

From 25 yards out and after having just made his way onto the pitch, Hamilton Carlin rips it and watches as it dings off the left post and over the end line. Fort Mill's goal kick is won by the Warriors and Carlin finds junior midfielder Hunter Danna, who hammers it home for a 2-1 Warrior lead.
FT - Fort Mill 1:2 Wando

That's the final, with Wando taking 8 of 10 possible points towards advancing from group play. Fort Mill earns a point from their goal. Here's the box score:

great job with all the updates, thanks all!
An update from Northwestern Coach Dom Wren late tonight (thanks, Dom! ... abbreviated a bit for the sake of posting):

Mohit Gupta, 16 years old senior from NHS, suffered a broken tibia and fibula early in the second half of last night's Palmetto Cup. He will have surgery later today (12 April). Mohit, last year's recipient of the SC Young Doctor of the Year award, will attend USC next year.

On behalf of Mohit and the staff at Northwestern HS, thanks go out to the medical staff at The Cage for their prompt and thorough care. In addition, thank you to the players, coaches and supporters of Irmo High School for their show of class and compassion throughout the injury time.

We wish this outstanding young man a quick and full recovery from this injury, and all the best in his future endeavors.

We at Irmo Soccer wish Mohit a full and speedy recovery! Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during his surgery today. Dom please let us know how the surgery goes and good luck to NW the rest of the tournament.

Wando gets off a nice shot from a cross, but the Card keeper slaps it up and over. 8" in
and a grenade takes down a Card in the box for a shot from the spot.......and balls in the net! CN 1-0 Wando
and now just minutes later, off a corner, the warriors knot it up, 1-1. 14 minutes in.
GOALS!!! Wando 1:1 Cardinal Newman

Penalty Given on 9'! Wando defender Brock King brings down Cardinal forward Jack Sicker as he makes a run up the left side of the pitch inside the area and Referee Steve Abbott points to the spot without hesitation. Goalkeeper Hunter Greer guesses to his left as Wofford-bound senior forward Nestor Jaramillo hammers it home -- not that it would have been saved. Before we could post, though, Wando countered with a nice finish by future Gamecock and defender Trent Rieflin. Rieflin was on the receiving end of a nice corner placed in by Erik Clark to even the score at 1:1 on 13'.
Boom, and in the 36th, after a debacle in the box, Wando comes away with another. CN 1-2 Wando.
GOAL!!! Wando 2:1 Cardinal Newman ('35)

Sophomore midfielder Christopher Corontzes finds the back of the net for the Warriors. Forward Hamilton Carlin worked himself in on the left angle of the six and fired away at Cardinals' netminder Thomas Wilczewski who deflected the shot to his left. But Corontzes was following and finished from near right post inside the six. Wando have had the better of the play in the first half, but not by much. The Warriors have outshot Cardinal Newman 7-4, and have had three corners to one for the Redbirds. CN made some good chances for themselves, but were unable to capitalize.
Halftime - Wando 2:1 Cardinal Newman
The second half is underway, and Coach Will Eudy's Cards have taken his halftime talk to heart. A free kick awarded to the top-ranked SCISA team was taken by Jaramillo, who hammers it off the crossbar and the ball is cleared. Not long after, Wando goes back on the attack and senior forward James Appleby fires away at Wilczewski, who makes the save. He can't collect it, though, and the rebound heads to Christian Jablonski. The junior midfielder looked to add to the lead, but his shot was cleared inside the six by defender Nick Palevich. Great action here at The Cage for today's first match!
GOAL!!! Wando 2:2 Cardinal Newman

Like I said, Cardinal Newman has picked it up this frame. Senior Andrew Wilczewski follows up a shot by classmate Thomas Touma on 56' which is unbelievably cleared off the line by a Wando defender. The clear hits the crossbar and back to Wilczewski, who hammers it home to equalize. We've got us a ballgame, ladies and gentlemen!
Dave,
On behalf of all us slobs that can't get away....we salute you.

Keep em coming!!!!
Oh man, now in the 70th Wando hits another, making it 4-2 Wando.

yah....what he said.

Take one of my virgins out of petty cash!
GOALS!!! Wando 4:2 Cardinal Newman

Fast and furious is the action in the last quarter hour at the Cup. Junior midfielder Hunter Danna hits a strike from 20 yards which appears goal-bound to Wilczewski's left but he leaps high and wide to parry it over crossbar. The resulting corner is well placed by Andrew Eskinazi, and Trent Rieflin buries his chance into the twine. The Cardinals fail to capitalize on a scoring opportunity in their area which trickles ever so slowly to the left side of the goal before second half goalkeeper Joe Wichmann can make the play. On the counter-attack up the left wing, sophomore defender Jackson Karolczyk crosses to a forward-rushing Hamilton Carlin. Carlin lays it off to Eskinazi, who puts it away from the back side.
FT - Wando 4:2 Cardinal Newman

Day 2, Match 1 is now in the books in a very entertaining and well played match by both teams. That's the great thing about this tournament: these kids gave their all for 80 minutes, and we were lucky enough to be here to witness the quality on the pitch. The two goals in two minutes for the Warriors with less than 10 to play were just too much for Cardinal Newman to overcome, and they suffer their first defeat since last spring.

Match 6 - Wando 4:2 Cardinal Newman

OK everyone, it's the Dave Easley lesson on soccer cliches:
Repeat after me:

fired four towards the twine
and looks to be in position to equalize
on the scoreboard with the equalizer
the receiving end of a deflected corner kick
A ball handled in the area results in a spot kick
fires a beauty towards the frame
The Warriors draw first blood
on the stroke of halftime
grenade takes down a Card in the box for a shot from the spot
the warriors knot it up,
finds the back of the net
buries his chance into the twine
And there's only two and a half more days of them to come ...

Lexington have a Gray Griffin goal called back on a free kick as offsides was given by AR Steve Abbott after the goalkeeper dropped the save and it was hammered home by one of the Wildcats. It's almost halftime ...
Its a shame that B-E has been missing one of thier best players (Khouri) this year, they have still been very good in thier matches.
Halftime -- Lexington 0:0 Bishop England

Forty minutes are in the books in today's second match. The Bishops looked to have had the advantage in the first half, outshooting the Lexington squad by four shots to one. Each team has had two corners, and only five fouls were whistled by referee Alan Correa (3-2 in favor of BE). But the disallowed goal made for an interesting first half, albeit against the run of play.

The second half is underway, and five minutes in Lexington's Sammy Andrews finds an opening near the top of the area and drills a shot goalwards. It is right to Ross Rogers, junior netminder for the Bishops, though. He holds on for the save and punts the ball near the center circle, resulting in open play.
Just over an hour played in today's second match at The Cage, and it is still a scoreless draw. The Bishops now lead in shots (9-3), corners (3-2), and fouls (5-4), but not on the scoreboard where it counts. Lexington may be a bit on their heels, but not enough to warrant counting them out offensively.
Bishop England very nearly score on a Lexington own goal with 7 to play. The throw-in from near the end line was headed around the box and an attempted flick away found the ball precariously near the goal line then off the post before senior defender Jon Holleman clears it for the Wildcats. Still 0:0 now on 75'.
The Wildcats make it even more interesting, as both Adam Yonge and Sammy Andrews have good opportunities at finding the back of the net. Both shots are off target, and it remains scoreless.
FT - Lexington 0:0 Bishop England

A late Lexington flurry and three shots in the last 5 minutes are not enough to break the tie. Each team earns 4 points for the draw, a far different result than these squads first meeting at Patriots Point in the season-opening Raising Cane's Carolina Soccer Classic. The Bishops took that contest by 3 goals to nil.

Note: We are heading to Granby Education Center for the next match (Norman North OK vs. Northwestern) and will be splitting up the crew in the Press Box. There will likely be only a few updates until we get back for the 8:00 match in The Cage. We will catch you up when we can. Thanks!

stats posted above say irmo
I was at the Norman North vs. Northwestern match at Granby, then was catching up on composing the box scores when I got back to The Cage. So I only saw 'most' of the second half -- and then only when my head wasn't down looking at the scoresheets and typing. But...

Christ Church jumped in front on 17' minutes. Irmo then equalized on 19'. It was 1-1 until 4 minutes into the second half, when Irmo took the lead. There was a lot of good goalkeeping and great defending the rest of the match, great end-to-end action. Christ Church had their share of chances -- as did the Yellow Jackets. Both teams had shots off the post or crossbar, and a flurry of action inside the Irmo area nearly produced a goal to tie in the last 10 minutes. Irmo's third goal just prior to the match's conclusion ensured the result for the nation's number 1 ranked team.

It was a heck of a match. Irmo remains the team to beat, and are a quality squad with a lot of senior leadership. While they may have had the better of the overall run-of-play, though, Christ Church is the real deal too. David Wilcox and his Cavaliers can play with anyone.

Thanks, and, maybe so, but Cody Cook was indicated as the starting goalkeeper for Lexington as submitted on the team sheet to the Press Box.

We were given none. We just saw a play transpire and an AR put the flag up very near the end line. Then we saw how livid Will Gettys appeared at the call. Our text commentary would have been more clear had there been an explanation.

Is Herbert back for the Bearcats?
why can't a player be offside on a ball dropped by the keeper. If he was in an offside position when the ball was struck, he will still be offside when the ball comes off the keeper. No?
That would be a correct statement GSDad. Unless the keeper controlled it and played it down to his feet.
Twenty minutes played, 0:0. The NHL Playoffs are in full swing, and Wando skipper Shilo Tisdale makes a line change. Overheard from outside the press box was the comment: "Wow! They sub 10 men in and the subs are still bigger than the Bearcats." It's six shots to one for the visitors from Mt. Pleasant.
GOAL!!! Brookland-Cayce 0:1 Wando (29')

Penalty given! A Bearcat defender takes a stab at a ball being played down the left edge inside the area and gets not the ball, but freshman Jeff Owens. Referee Barry Lee points to the spot, B-C netminder Grant Strickland guesses left, and Owens nails it to the right. One half hour played, and the Warriors lead 1-0.
wando should have entered 2 teams
Halftime - Brookland-Cayce 0:1 Wando

Wow. A B-C long throw by Jalin Butler finds its way inside the six and very near the end line. Bearcat defender Scottie Newman gets a body up and on Wando's Hunter Greer in goal, who rather than letting the ball sail unimpeded into the goal mouth, spills it into the net, and the crowd goes wild. But referee Barry Lee says otherwise. The whistle blows and he points West, and Wando dodges a bullet just before the half.
Quote:

wando should have entered 2 teams

Now that right there's funny, I don't care who you are.
Just over fifty played ... Warriors are still on top, but there's a battling spirit left in the ranks of the River Rats. Wando are still leading the shots tally, as they hold a 10-5 advantage. They know there's still a match underway.
GOAL!!! Brookland-Cayce 0:2 Wando (55')

The Brookland-Cayce defense makes a crucial mistake and mis-hits the clear. Senior forward James Appleby is there to take advantage and hits a six yard strike for which goalkeeper Grant Strickland has no chance to defend. While a two goal lead is typically the toughest to defend, the mountain the Bearcats must climb is more like a shear cliff. Let the scaling begin.
The crossbar is kind to the Warriors. A B-C free kick is awarded as Junior forward Herbert Cojulun is fouled just outside the area about two-thirds up the width of the box. Bearcat Gustavo Gonzaga fires a rocket off the middle of the crossbar, Wando makes the clear, and open play resumes. On the other end, Jackson Karolczyk plays a ball across to Hamilton Carlin, who finds Hunter Danna. Danna finds the back of the net, but the flag is up. Still very good action in The Cage as we approach 70 minutes.
GOAL!!! and FT - Brookland-Cayce 1:2 Wando

The Fighting Bearcats live up to their name and never say die. Wando players claim a B-C back handles it in the area, but Barry Lee has none of it. B-C counters and Cojulun finds ball at foot. He makes a couple of nifty moves, tries to find some help and attracts Wando defenders. They force a diagonal pass to an onwards rushing Bearcat, who is met by Warrior defenders and he sends the ball over to Cojulun again. He chests it down near the feet of Bearcat midfielder Gustavo Gonzaga. He takes a touch or two, and fires away from just outside the right side of the arc. The rifled shot hits the back of the net just before the 80:00 mark on the clock to close out the match on the heels of a 2-1 loss to the state's third ranked AAAA squad.

Match 11 - Brookland-Cayce 1:2 Wando

Goals: (B-C) Gustavo Gonzaga 80'; (W) Jeff Owens 29', James Appleby 55'.
Assists: (B-C) Herbert Cojulun.
Shots: B-C 7-12 W.
Saves: B-C 5 (Grant Strickland); W 4 (Hunter Greer).
Corner Kicks: B-C 2-3 W.
Offsides: B-C 0-7 W.
Fouls: B-C 6-17 W.
Cautions: None.
Man of the Match: TBD.
Records: B-C 12-3-2, (1-2-0) W 15-2-0 (3-0-0)
Officials: (R) Barry Lee, (AR) Dima Gasan, (AR) Jason Kent.
Weather: Clear, 66 Degrees.
GOALS!!! Bishop England 1:2 Norman North (OK) 51'

The second half of the Bishop England vs. Norman North (OK) match is now 22 minutes in with the score Bishops 1, Timberwolves 2. Bishop England led off the scoring as Brian Byrne was on the receiving end of a square pass across the area from Michael Reifeis and buried it on 22'. Andrew Costa started the series of events with a nice through ball to claim the double assist. The Battlers went into halftime with the slim 1:0 advantage.

North coach Geovanni Claros must have handed it to the T-wolves at the half as they came out fired-up. It took less than 3 minutes to equalize. Cole Johnson's 43' goal was unstoppable as the Daniel Islanders looked to be a bit confused in their marking in the back. Eight minutes later, sophomore midfielder Mauro Cichero hammered the ball home from 12 yards to give the Oklahomans a 2-1 advantage. Good action again in The Cage, with Norman North having a 9-6 shot advantage thus far.
GOAL!!! Bishop England 1:3 Norman North (OK) 72'

Ross Rogers did all he could to combat the clear, sunny western sky and the Timberwolves in the 72nd minute. Ashton Bray fired one from within the silhouette of the sun and Rogers keeps it out of the net. But there's no way he could have collected it cleanly, and from the six Cichero drives the follow up to his right and into the twine for his fourth goal in two matches. The Bishops must strike quickly, but Norman North have had the advantage this half.
Just a reminder that we have to hustle over to Granby for the 6:30 match, and updates will be difficult to come by. We will catch you up on everything as soon as we are able to get back to The Cage ... Thanks!
FT - Bishop England 1:3 Norman North (OK)
never fear Dave, we have your back! Live updates from the cage, someone shoot a text on over from Granby and we can post for you!
First strike, Christ Church! In the 19th a cross from the left line finds Hunter Townes head at the back post! CC 1-0 NW

Nice little picture I found on the internet. Should be an interesting game!
Going into the half at The Cage and the score remains 1-0 with Christ Church dominating this match. The Cavaliers lead in shots 12-1 and this field might as well be 60 yards long since the run of play has mostly been seen on the Northwestern half!
Tonights match up is much anticipated, with not just two of the midlands best teams, but two of the nations!
Two updates, at the cage CC nets another in the 70th to go up 2-0 on Northwestern.

And at Granby education center Fort Mill has the lead at the half over Lexington by 2 goals!

Both Irmo, with coaching entourage entail, and the Cardinal Newman boys have begun warming up behind the nets for the much anticipated 8 o'clock match up.
And we are done at the cage with a final of Christ Church 2-0 Northwestern. Seems it could have been much worse, but CC just couldn't find the net.

Half an hour.......
A51 minutes into the match at Granby and Fort Mill leads Lexington by 3 goals to none.
The excitement level is building here at the cage. The crowd is is growing, this might turn out to be standing room only. If your coming, better get here quick if you want a seat!

On a side note, Fort Mill scores another in a break away match over Lexington, score now stands at FM 4-0 Lexington.
And here we go, at The Cage, the nations #1 team, Irmo, vs the nations #5 team, Cardinal Newman! With only one loss between the two teams, this should be great!
Meanwhile at Granby, Fort Mill wins handily over Lexington, 4-0.
11 minutes in and Irmo gets a great opportunity, but the Cards keeper sets it up over the bar for a corner which gives Irmo another shot with the same result. Great match, with Irmo leading in the shot column 4-0.
Wow, after some ruckus in the goal mouth during an Irmo throw in, the cards keeper finds himself on the ground in a melee, but somehow comes up with the ball. A Cardinal defender takes exception to the fact that there was no whistle and the official doesn't seem to like what he has to say and shows him the yellow. 20 minutes in and scoreless.
And there we go, on a long throw for Irmo, Connor Dunbaker hits one in after a previous shot was blocked in the goal mouth. 28th minute, Irmo 1-0 Cardinal Newman
In two nights here in the tourney, Irmo has netted 3 goals off the long throw.
With 4 minutes left in the half, Nestor Jaramillo finds the streaking foot of Koty Millard but the ball ends up in the side of the net, the wrong side. But great opportunity.
Here in the 40th minute, an Irmo player puts Millard down with a hard foul and sees the yellow.

So here at the half, Irmo 1-0 Cardinal Newman
Taking a look around here, it seems there really is no extra room in the stands. I'll bet BC didn't see this many people in the stands for the whole football season combined!
50th minute, yellow is shown to CN's Cam Bohannon for undercutting an Irmo player at midfield.
GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL! Nestor Jaramillo absolutely drills a free kick from 35 yards out on the left side into the back of the net! Irmo 1-1 Cardinal Newman
And Irmo responds on another throw in, goal at the 54th minute puts Irmo back on top, 2-1.
Another yellow handed out to Irmo's Mattison Gossett.
68th minute, Irmo nets another after some poor defensive work making the score Irmo 3-1 Cardinal Newman
71st minute, Irmo gives up the penalty in the box, and Nestor Jaramillo puts the pk past a diving keeper bringing the Cards one goal closer. Irmo 3-2 Cardinal Newman
This game is proving to be all it was made out to be. Fast paced, hard checks and a little chippiness is making for an exciting match. You wouldmthinkmthese two teams were old foes!
77th minute, GOAL! Nestor Jaramillo hits another free kick past the wall and the keeper from 20 yards out!!!!!!! Jaramillo now has the hat trick for Cardinal Newman which knots this at 3 all.
Wow, GOAL! As the official let's the run of play continue with several minutes of extra time, Irmo strikes in the final seconds to win this thrilling match 4-3!
Good work Rhino. Thanks for the updates.
What an amazing high school soccer match! Congratulations to both teams. Really impressed with the way Cardinal Newman kept battling back and the way Irmo kept their composure to earn the win.
Day 4 is now here, the final day of the prestigious Palmetto Cup. In action this morning, BC vs CN here at the cage and Irmo vs NN at Granby. Let's see how the two teams from yesterday's late match can respond here early today. First matches kick off at 9am. Don't forget the finals today at 5, the championship teams are still not set, could be an interesting day. Who's gonna take home the hardware? Which team will persevere and collect the cup for 20th annual Palmetto Cup? Stay tuned....

And now here at The Cage, the Bearcats net one themselves here in the 16th minute to take the lead over the Cardinals. BC 1-0 CN
looks like both teams from the late game are still a little tired....
Can't speak for Irmo, but Cardinal Newman def looks a little heavy legged.
This is where it gets strange in tournament play, fatigue can allow a team that is not the best to pull out a win. Look at CN...they had to play Wando and Irmo back to back, and Irmo had a though game with CC (1 fewer game played than them) and now NN with 1 fewer game played by NN. And I guarantee that CN took it out of them last night. I would think on a normal day that CN would beat BC by 2 or 3 goals...just my opinion though....
Wow, here in the 34th minute a great pass on the floor past the keeper in the box to a wide open Cardinal, gets them nothing as the CN player chokes on the open net and plays the ball wide. Opportunity lost.
I said its last night, both those teams left it on the field. In tourney play, strange things can happen, this is where you find out what your made of, dig down deep and find the will or make excuses and go home. Tough draw for both teams, these matches are far from over.
No recent updates from Granby, but here at the cage BC will take the lead into the half. BC 1-0 CN

Just got word from Granby, NN also will take the lead into the half, NN 1-0 Irmo
Word is Irmo also looks gased, last nights match took its toll on these 2 teams, but neither is done. As we get set to begin the second halves, only time will tell now....
An early opportunity for BC as one is put in the net after the keeper got caught way out of position, but the goal is called back after the head man calls a handball.
GOAL! The Bearcats work there way into the box and a cross into the goal mouth is put away. BC now takes a 2 goal lead. BC 2-0 CN
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Norman families and community!
Norman, OK had a tornado go through it yesterday...

What happened?
Word from Granby is, Norman North's Brandon Litlle Axe has received his second yellow and is out for the day.
It's a shame that such a well run tournament makes such a move of ignorance and schedules the two teams of the late game to play the early game. Almost looks like it was done on purpose. And don't tell me the games were already set. It just looks bad. So you're telling me that none of these other teams could play at 9 am? Only CN and Irmo? WOW
c'mon rhino4 stop being a homer and accept the fact this was a mistake
75th minute, GOAL Cardinal Newman! Imagine that Nestor Jaramillo set up a free kick from the left side, five yards outside the box and puts the ball around the wall and under a diving keeper! Making the score here at The Cage BC 2-1 CN
Jimmy, was no mistake, I have no dog in this fight. I do know the facts and I know that those teams wanted to play last night. They know that playing the best competition is more worthy than the trophy, they both are looking for state championships and this is the best way to prepare. So see it the way you want, but you neither understand nor know the facts.
That's a final here at The Cage, BC taking the game from CN by a goal, final BC 2-1 CN!
And a final from Granby, Norman North 1-0 Irmo
Oh soccer girl, once again your ignorance is outstanding, glad you are good at something, your probably an official aren't you? Feel free to leave your mothers basement and catch some of the action live, I'll even let you play angry birds on my iPad between matches.
Rhino, perfectly mistated on your part. Both teams wanted to play the last game, the showcase game, yes we all get that. But, then could they both have not been scheduled for the 11 am game today. You are implying both coaches are not very smart and wanted the first early morning game and I doubt Savitz or Eudy would say that. I do not have to know all the facts just the obvious.

You see that man sipping the haterade down there? I believe he is the son of an irmo coach...Can you please send him a can of simmer and a water. I believe he has had enough...keep the posts coming Rhino4 I'm fine with any "slant" you may have.. I like to hear how the games are going, as I cannot attend.
Didn't BC and Norman North have the longest rest from yesterday? Hmmm. That's odd. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Lets keep some integrity in the games. I lost some respect for this tournament today. Irmo and CN should be pissed. What a joke.
Cayman
It is what it is. Tournament play does that to teams, and I am sure it wasn't intentional. Irmo came in late and they had to change the schedule for them to play, so give props to the tournament administrators for getting a schedule that would work with many of the teams that were in school this week. It is obvious that CN and Irmo went at each other last night hard, and you will be fatigued after a game like that....They got to play some good teams to prepare for the playoffs, why be pissed?
From Granby Christ Church strikes first against Lexington in the 12th minute. CC 1-0 Lexington
And here at The Cage, in the 20th minute, Wando gets the first net! Wando 1-0 Northwestern
You're right. I'm looking at this wrong. CN and Irmo shouldn't be pissed. They had some great competition. I know that this tournament will only prepare them for the main goal...a state title. I just think the administrators could have had different teams playing this morning. Good luck to CN and Irmo.
And here again today, at the 20 minute mark, Wando makes a line change, putting in ten fresh players, and immediately the fresh legs put one in the net! A deep bench is invaluable, maybe Irmo and CN should have used the depth. Anyway, score here at The Cage, Wando 2-0 Northwestern
With less than a minute left in a pretty uneventfulmatch, a yellow will be shown to a Wando player. But at the half Wando will lead Northwestern by 2 goals. Appears Wando came to win some hardware, resting the starting 10 field players early, prepping them for a 5 o'clock championship match.
Northwestern seems to have taken the team to the other side of campus for probably a not so sweet half time speech! As the halftime horn has blown and Wando has taken the field, we await NW to take the field.
Thanks for updates Rhino. Do you know who scored for Wando??
Update from Granby is that Christ Church has put another in on Lexington in the 50th minute to extend their lead 2-0.
Hamilton Carlin and Christopher Corontzes have scored for Wando.
And at Granby in the 52nd minute, Lexington has struck back making the new score CC 2-1 Lexington
Here in the 58th minute a great build up and goal is called back for offsides, but as I type Wando regroups and immediately take it back to NW and hits a strike from just inside the 18 that finds all net! Erik Clark gets the credit for putting Wando up 3-0.
And just like that, BAM, Wando hits another from just inside the 18 and under a diving Northwestern keeper! In the 65th minute Wando takes a 4-0 lead.
We now have a final here at The Cage, Wando winning this one 4-0 over Northwestern, sending the Warriors to the finals at 5pm.

Looking like Wando will either face Irmo or Fort Mill who plays next against Bishop England. So stick around, this ain't over. But I am, some else is gonna have to take over until the finals.
Thanks Rhino for keeping us all informed. Appreciate the updates.

Didn't BC and Norman North have the longest rest from yesterday? Hmmm. That's odd. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Lets keep some integrity in the games. I lost some respect for this tournament today. Irmo and CN should be pissed. What a joke.

Man! Wando just got through playing. Now they have to play at 5:00. Wando should be pissed. What a joke.
After conferring with the tournament officials, the scenario for tonight's title contestants is this:

Fort Mill plays Bishop England in The Cage, starting momentarily. A Fort Mill win will give them a minimum of 8 points (unless they were to be deducted points for an ejection). This ties them with Irmo at 27 points.

Tournament rules dictate the following in the event of a tie in points (as printed in the program on page 5):

(1) Head-to-head --> They did not play
(2) Goal Differential --> Both teams stand on +6 before today's Fort Mill match. A Fort Mill win will give them +7 or more.

Therefore, a Fort Mill win without any ejections means Fort Mill will play Wando for the championship. Any other result gives Irmo a title match appearance.

Had Bishop England been in the running, the Bishops would play at 1 then at 5 for the final. Fort Mill is also in the 1:00 match, and IF they win they WILL be playing in the final at 5. For comparison purposes, in the Carolina Soccer Classic teams were playing at 10:30. Had the teams playing at 10:30 been in contention for the championship, they would have turned around and played at 1:00.

Additionally, Irmo was in school this week and unable to play matches during the day. Irmo and Cardinal Newman requested to play each other if at all possible. Thus far, this was the showcase match of the tournament. If you were there, you experienced the atmosphere. Please remember that the schedules are made far ahead of the contest, and per the tournament officials (which I am not - I'm here to assist in the sports information side of the event for the SC High School Coaches Association) the scheduling needs of all 10 schools involved are accomodated as best they can.

In reality, the teams who suffered the most in this year's Palmetto cup were Christ Church and Norman North (OK). Due to no fault of their own, neither can compete in the championship but both were in the running. The attendance and box office gate typically suffers when B-C play their matches at 2:00, but they are on Spring Break this week. Last night's match was one of the best ever in 20 years of this event. Thank you for your comments, though. They continue to promote the beautiful game in this great state.
GOAL!!! Bishop England 1:0 Fort Mill ('21)
@ Soccer Troll

Did you not read further down the thread and see that I corrected myself. I actually manned up, admitted I was wrong, and changed my post, something that most of the posters on here will not do. I just questioned the scheduling. Your shot at me just shows how childish a troll can be. Go back to whatever bridge you crawled out from.
How can you say that Christ Church, "through no fault of their own", cannot play in the final? The team chose not to so the boys can attend their prom. If that's not their fault, whose fault is it?
The Battling Bishops are living up to their name in the first half, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 3 to 1 thus far. Both teams are leaving it on the pitch. Each team have had one caution: BE's Brian Byrne (23'), and Walker Johnson (32') from Fort Mill. The Bishops have been whistled for 6 fouls to the Jackets 3. Halftime is fast approaching, still 1-0 to Bishop England.
"Through no fault of their own..." refers to the fact that their prom was tonight. It had nothing to do with them having a choice to attend or not to attend. The date for the tournament was set almost a year ago. Not sure when Christ Church officials set the date for prom. The same scenario happened a couple years ago to Farragut (TN), and they were given no choice in the matter.

Thank you for your comments.

Halftime - Bishop England 1:0 Fort Mill
Just over an hour played in today's last match of regular play, and Fort Mill have picked up the pace. They have outshot the Bishops 10-6. But it is still 1-0 in favor of BE.
The biggest shame is the that Norman wasnt eligible to play in final- its obvious that Norman and Wando are the two best in the tournament -
GOAL!!! Bishop England 2:0 Fort Mill (73')

The Yellow Jackets goalkeeper fails to pick up a loose ball in the area near the end line under little or no pressure, but the Bishops' Brian Byrne was nearby and collected the loose ball. He took a step to his left and directed the ball right into the back of the net for a far too easy goal. Looks like Irmo vs. Wando for the championship unless Fort Mill can get three goals in six minutes.
FT - Bishop England 2:0 Fort Mill

Come on down to The Cage for the championship ... #1 seed Wando (35 points) take on #2 seed Irmo (27 points). Match time is 5:00 PM. The 2012 Palmetto Cup will have a first-time champion this year -- Wando have been runners-up, and this is Irmo's first year in the event.
I predict that Wando will throttle them again like they did in State Champ last year and this will be the last time they play in this tournament-can't let that winning % and overblown ranking suffer by playing quality teams during the year.

Oh…you corrected yourself. I’m sorry. I thought that was sarcasm.
Being sort of a soccer purest, I take offense when someone with no idea what it takes to put on a great tournament, not once, but twice attacks a great soccer institution like the Palmetto Cup. You even went as far as to insinuate that the schedule was somehow fixed to give one team an advantage. Admitting your wrong isn’t good enough. You should apologize.
I’m sure the Heise boys would love your constructive criticism, but to end post with statements like “WOW” and “What a joke” show a lack of maturity and will most likely just fall on deaf ears.
BTW, once you admit you’re wrong, you probable should not continue with your little diatribe. It makes you look, well, sort of childish.

And as always remember “don’t feed the troll”
I surely hope Irmo brings it! I want to see a midland team win this, would like to see our state continue to represent at the top spot in the national polls. That being and not trying to make any excuse, Irmo left a lot on the field last night, then to turn around and play again early, they will need to be spot on tonight. While having seen the previous couple of Wando games and watching them make a complete line change at the 20 minute mark of both matches, they should be well rested and have the advantage there. But either way, this may not be the last time they see each other, and different circumstance could bring different results.
Rhino, I like what you wrote in that last comment...that is what I was saying and you tore me apart...what is different from you said and what I said?
SoccerAnswer...people just like to hate Irmo....it has been going on for years, the team just uses it as motivation, especially when people write it on here. It works to their advantage.
Even with their forfeit in the first match, wouldn't Norman North have been in the finals agains Wando if their state association allowed a fourth game?
Here we are 5 minutes to game time, the championship match of the 2012 Palmetto Cup at Brookland-Cayce High School. Wando versus Irmo. Nd as expected Irmo has brought a large following.
We will have Irmo wearing all black with Wando in the white-black-white kit. While it is only 80degrees out, that sun is potent right now.

After the playing of the national anthem and the coin toss, we will see Irmo attacking the west end of The Cage into that sun.

The players have taken the field and we are off!
And quickly Irmo mounts an attack, builds from midfield and a ball laid off at the top of the box and hit to goal is put wide by the keeper, giving Irmo the corner.
Ten minutes played and a back and forth match, with Irmo having the slight edge.
Irmo and Norman North were tied on 27 points based on the outcome of play as has transpired this week. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head competition, and the nod would have gone to the Timberwolves. Christ Church, had it not been predetermined that they would not compete due to prom tonight, were on 28 points. Had their prom been another night, the title match would have been Wando vs. Christ Church.
Quote:

20 minutes in and Wando makes the usual line change. Still scoreless with Irmo still getting the better opportunities and leading on shots 2-0.
Man i wish i could be there right now...thanks for the updates Rhino
And we have hit 30 minutes with more of the same, 3 shots to 1 in favor of Irmo with Irmo having a couple of corners and a handful of deep throws. The Yellow Jackets are definitely taking it straight to the Warriors.
Wow and here just seconds before the end of the first half, Wando hits a beautiful strike that soars just above the crossbar!

So that's the half, no score! Back to action in 10 minutes with Wando driving into the sun for the second half.
And the second half has begun....end to end action early, definitely a neck workout.
50 minutes still scoreless! This is becoming a battle, both these teams fighting hard, with Wando getting a few good oppurtunities here in the second half.
57th minute, GOAL Wando! Hunter Danna drills one past the keeper.....and as I type this Wando strikes again, 59th minute,Erik Clark!

Wando 2-0 Irmo

After the goal, Irmo's Matt Freeman is issued the yellow for dissent.
70th minute, still Wando 2-0 Irmo. Irmo has yet to give up on this match, 10 minutes left to play.
Those wando goals have really silenced the large contingency of Irmo fans. The white clown flying his Pan African flag isn't so quick to run up and down the concourse in front of the visiting fans right now. Thank God.
When is the last time Irmo lost 2 in a row? How about getting shutout twice in a row? 2 losses on the same day, ever? Wando must be for real!
Wando scoring two goals in two minutes on Irmo again?the rest of the state better watch out
Great questions.
Doesnt seem to working too good right now!
And that's it, Wando, the 2012 Palmetto Cup champions!
Well deserved...no doubt the best team in the tournament this year. Seems like they are running on full cylinders, and if i were another team id would like to avoid them throughout playoffs
Maybe they can add a few more coaches to go with their arrogant and obnoxious parents for the rematch next month
IRMO that is
i don't know if you can add any more coaches...is that possible?
Congrats to Wando. They have a very good team again with great depth and balance.

No it wasnt
Its amazing the excuses Irmo people make when they lose. They are not the #1 team in the country because they arent even the best team in SC- just be gracious and congratulate the other team when you lose. Quit living off of past acheivements you sound like a bunch of Clemson fans
Speaking of the past I was amazed to see that Irmo has NEVER beaten Wando in the State Championship, Wando won every time they played. The only time Wando ever lost in the Finals was two years in a row to Eastside when they were a 4A school
Actually Wando has lost in the state championship game in:

1985, 1986, and 1990

They have done well in the state championship games winning 70% of the time they reached the finals.

Wando lost to Irmo in the 1990 state championship game.

Wando has reached the state finals 10 times.
Your data and facts are incorrect. Wando lost the AAAA State Championship to Eastside in 1985 and 1986. Irmo defeated Wando in 1990 AAAA State Championship. Wando then beat Irmo in 1991 and 1992, 2002, and 2011. Wando beat Greenwood in 1994.
Irmo is 15-10 in State Championship Games (13 as AAAA; 2 before Size Classifications were used)....Wando is 5-3.
http://www.schsl.org/2009/pfbso.pdf

Next, to discuss the Palmetto Cup, Wando has made the finals once before, losing to Bishop England in 2010.

While 30 other schools will have someting to say about it.....I suspect an Irmo-Wando rematch in Columbia on May 21!
I wanted to congratulate Shilo and Wando on an impressive 5-0 run and ultimate championship in a vary strong PC field. Also, good luck to all 10 participants moving forward this season. Lastly, a big shout out to Kevin, Kyle and Dave on a well run tournament.

No it wasnt

How do you know? The kick from the sideline was on target but was directed with a touch off frame by the keeper. The ball then hit the defender trailing the Wando player who was already in the net. The deflected ball then went in (off the defender). This is an own goal. My sources are the keeper and the video. What is your source?
Only thing I can say is we were told that the official saw our player hit the GK in the face with his hand, thus the goal being called back. By this picture, it doesn't look like any interference.

B-C Goal Called Back vs Wando?
GSDad....there is no use explaining due to the fact that most of the people that are going to argue about that are moronic little boys that don't have enough common sense or decency to 1) admit that they were wrong 2) don't have enough common sense to find their way out of a wet brown paper bag. I get really ticked at a lot of what I read on here. It is baseless nonsense that hardly has any fact behind it. Then you have the complete morons that take shots on Phil Savitz like they did earlier on this thread. They don't know him, have never met him, but think it is ok to be rude and condecending like that....what a great bunch of future adults we have coming up in society......
You got to love the Irmo fans-they'll defend themselves/teammates/coachs even as the ship is sinking beneath them. Good luck
It's a message board, your going to disagree with other people's opinion....sounds like you're the little kid. The world doesn't revolve around you

Wow haha you gotta admit, that's funny no matter which side you're on!
Not sure the video supports an answer one way or another. The keeper barely got a hand on the ball and it seems hard to tell if the trailing Wando player and Irmo defender were in a position such that anything they did was gonna cause the ball to go in no matter what. Asking the keeper if he defelected it off frame would likely get the same answer from most keepers "Of course I did!", and maybe he did but ....

Given this angle and the speed it really happened at and with no replay I would give credit to Wando for a goal. They put the ball in play that was gonna score and the defernders could not stop the shot/deflection from getting in. Give credit to the Wnado player for following the shot into the net and draging the defender into the play where he may have be part of the goal as well. Either way it was the attacking team who "caused" the goal not a bad play by the defenders that caused a "own goal".
I see your point but it's a high def video that doesn't translate well to you tube. Right off the camera on a HD TV it's very easy to see the sequence of events as I have described them. In slow motion it's what they would call in the NFL "indisputable". And it supports what the keeper said happened.

I'm not trying to get the official scoring changed. Just stating the facts. It was just a good play on both ends with an unlucky bounce for Irmo.
That picture isn't funny because Savitz has enough rings for not only both hands, but a couple of toes too

Cool

This I agree with. I don't agree that most keepers would say they deflected a shot off frame that they didn't. Either I have too much trust or you have too little.
Re: Own goals.
I thought the primary element is whether the shot would be on goal WITHOUT a defensive deflection or interference. In other words, had the defender (other than the keeper) NOT touched the ball, would it have gone in? I was at the match, and at the time, felt the ball was bundled in by either the attacking player on the far post, or the defender in the same area. Now I'm not sure.
That said, if the original shot was NOT going in, and was effectively knocked in from the doorstep by a defender, I'd think that would be an own goal.

EXACTLY!

Not questioning the integerity of the young man in goal, just saying that most high caliber players will think the move they made was good, or gonna work becaus they are totally focused on the effort with the mind set that they can make it happen. See it all the time with offsides where the play swears they were on but the fans in the stands can clearly see otherwise.

Besides upside down looking over your back is not always the best perspective to judge a shot, which is how he must of seen it after that great leap he made just to get a hand on it!

Agreed. How and why is he being targeted? He should be held in high regards. Coach Savitz has shown nothing but class towards the Wando program and I would imagine for every program he goes up against. Whether he is on the winning end or not he is a class act. Congratulations coach on your career so far and I look forward to every battle our two programs have against each other.

A special thanks also to the Brookland Cayce program for once again putting together an excellent pre playoff tournament.

Got to agree with Coach Tisdale here.

Coach Savitz is held in the highest regard by his opposing coaches.

My first ever game as a head coach was in the 2006 LMC. Coach Savitz met me off the bus, hugged me, told me congratulations and said if i needed him for anything he was at the end of the phone. This man, who is a legend in prep soccer had made me feel that wed known each other for years and as a young coach (not so much young any more) at the time, the guy just bowled me over. He is a first class coach, leader, mentor and man.

Ever since that day, I have considered Coach Savitz a friend, and I can bet that I am not the first person or will be the last person whom he has had that effect on.

Again, Thanks to Kevin, Kyle, Dave, Katie and the rest of the team at BC for a first class tournament. Also Congratulations to Coach Tisdale and his Wando Warriors for a worthy victory, I doubt there is a better team in the country playing HS soccer.

ps if anybody has a picture of my 1 sub vs his 10 subbing in, please let me have a copy!

Cheers
Dom
Well stated Shilo and Dom! Phil and the Irmo program have been nothing short of first class for more than 30 years! Amazing!!!
Shilo and Dom...Thank you so much for those kind words!! It means a great deal to me coming from two people I truly respect!! You guys are 1st class, as are your programs, and I have so enjoyed all the great games we have been involved in over the years and look forward to all the future battles as well. I really wish people would use the message board to share ideas and give and receive information as it is intended and leave the team, coach and player bashing out. Most of the time the people who make character assassination type statements don't really even know the person or the circumstances they speak about and are just trying to stir up controversy. Anyway, thanks again and all the best moving forward!
Thanks Kevin and thanks for a 1st class tournament with top level competition!! Good luck to the Bearcats moving forward!!
In the end, a high school coach's "product" is not so much the wins, or the championships -- both easily measured by even the narrowest of thinkers -- but the positive impact and example he or she sets for a community, a school, a sport, a team, and ultimately the young people he or she coaches.
I suspect that, if you asked any one of the coaches who post here, they'd tell you that their best coaching doesn't yield championships, but rather, champions.
An amazing list of talent for the all-tournament team! Our state should be proud of our all-tournament selections. Perhaps Fort Mill senior standouts Kevin Fielden and Walker Johnson were worthy of inclusion as well?
Where does it say the all tournament team? I saw the short list. But who were the 4 players from Wando, 2 players from NN and Irmo, etc.
The list that I was referencing was on forum page 32
That list only has 7 players.
Thought that was a little strange as well. Perhaps there are more to follow? Great talent mentioned nonetheless!
The Jablonski kid isn't even listed on the All-Tourney team? Thats kind of a shocker. I watched all of Wando's games, and although he did not score, he did set up a great assist in the final, and looked to dominate in every game, especially in the final, he was unstoppable. Kinda confused on that...and no Kevin Fieldon either? Thought he was "the machine" for that Fort Mill team. Someone explain these two.
tournies like to spread the accolades around to as many teams as possible. i wouldn't read too much into it.
Jablonski in my opinion is not a game changer. If you watched a game one would barely recognize he is on the field. In my opinion. Seen him play on a few occasions and although he is leading scorer, most of his goals have been tap ins from within the 6. However he is still getting himself into the right positions. But to me not to impressive.

well those of us in the know, know better.
this would probably be an opportune time to get a vote on another mt pleasant high school
Why? Wandos best players will have to play academy next year won't they?
How many potential players will be affected with academy players not being able to play high school soccer next year at Wando? I heard it was a substantial number!
Look at Dutch Fork and Cardinal Newman about 6 players off each team.
Score-a-Goal: With reference to your "within the 6" comment ... Where do you think most goals are scored?
Take a look at last year's Class AAAA state championship game. As I recall, two goals off headers in or around the 6 (Sieverding, Carlin); one off a keeper turnover in his own area (tap-in by Carlin); and one off a quick transition and break, with the finish from just inside the 18 (Jablonski).
Pretty typical, actually.
Heck, look at the 2012 PC championship game. Two goals: one (credited to Clark) that appeared to be bundled in due to confusion on the goal line; and the other (by Danna) on a shot from about 12-14 yards out, set up by Jablonski.
Heck, Irmo's entire modus operandi throughout the tournament was to create corner kicks and long throw-ins, then score from (shock of shocks!) within the 6.
Yes, there were some great strikes in the 2012 PC, mostly off FKs (a couple by CN's Jaramillo come to mind). But having seen about 12 games over 4 days, I'd say the vast majority came from within 12-15 yards, including many from "within the 6."
Doesn't mean you're right or wrong about the kid you mentioned. Just that the fundamental premise of your comments is flawed.
Christian Jablonski is a great player who is probably the most committed player I have ever coached. He gives 100% everyday in a match or practice. As of now I would nominate Christian for All-State no doubt. There are a lot of variables that go into who gets picked for all-tournament. I am privileged to work with Chrisitian and not much more than a year ago he was the one that sealed the State title for Wando with the 3rd goal.
Just so everyone is aware, the posts for the Palmetto Cup are updated when information is given to Kevin and Kyle. They edit the original post whenever possible so that they don't have to copy and paste a bunch of info over and over making an even longer thread. So as the coaches provide the Heises their All-Tournament picks, the same post is changed to reflect those selections. It no longer has 7 players. Page 32 is the correct reference. Cheers - Dave

Well said, Phil, and well followed by Kevin's post. One of the pitfalls of having a message board available is that people can take advantage of the public nature of the forum. It is not intended to be used for personal attacks, but to promote (in this particular forum) boys high school soccer in this state. Irmo have often been a target as they have an incomparable history. Well done to Phil and his staff for making that so. I am proud to have known him and his assistants for over 20 years now. IMO, based on the changing Irmo demographic, Phil has done some of his finest coaching over the past 5-10 years. His record speaks for itself. And well done to the Heises for their efforts to promote soccer in this state (and the nation, frankly). They have done more with less better than just about any I know. While I left Lexington 2 some 15 years ago, I remain a staunch supporter of both the B-C program where I was on staff, and high school soccer in this state. It is an honor to continue providing sports information and do my little part with the SCHSSCA and NSCAA when time permits. It is a lot harder than one thinks. All the best for an outstanding finish to the season guys.

Cardinal Newman and Dutch fork each have 2 players on the current academy team. Wando has atleast 10
Dave, good point with the Heises.....they do a lot with their kids there. You wouldnt think that demographically that BC would be as good as they are in soccer....but they have consistently had good teams year after year. You are correct with the demographics of Irmo also. When I graduated from there in 1992, our class size was approaching 1000 kids per class, and we had all the new subdivisions included in the school district. Now Dutch Fork took a lot of the new money, and the class sizes are down around 450 to 500 kids in a class. A lot smaller pool to pull talent from. What are the largest schools now in SC?
DF 2012 class is like 420ish or lower now. They were at 480ish but there are half-years or dropouts. Dorman is really big and nice also..
I think Wando is the largest with almost 900 students per class (3500 students)then Dorman,Lexington,Summerville, Sumter, Byrnes. Dutch Fork is 15th largest with just over 2000 students Irmo is 19th largest with almost 2000 students. Compared with Christ Church with 328 students and Bishop England with a little ovver 700.
