Thanks for the updates. How crowded is it up there? What condition is the pitch in? I'm expecting a crowd for Irmo-Lex
Looks like a crowd is assembling in the parking lot. Couple of tailgating tents around. Pitch is holding up well. They have taken the lines out a couple of yards either way. Chance for Eastside as I'm typing.
Looks to be a fairly large crowd now and only going to get bigger.
Appears both teams have settled in with a little more possession. Both are lacking the final killer pass.
Eastside taking control now and a free kick for EHS quickly taken off the crossbar. Corraled by the keeper.

Great match and a tough way to end it. Congrats Coach Quinlan on your first State Championship at Hilton Head.
Goal MacMurray PK 74'
HHI with the only sweep of the weekend as well. Boys and Girls bringing some hardware home.
Congrats to Coach Quinlan and the Seahawks. A bit disappointed in the much ballyhooed Eagles. No goals? What's up with that?
Lower State just seems dominant this year. So much for the Upstate mystique.

Score from the A game??
12-0, I think I heard someone say. Makes you wonder how a team like that qualified.
Upper State in A boys is quite strong and Lower State quite weak. The three private schools in Greenville will always compete for that championship.
Aside from the talent gap in the Eastside-HHI girls match I think all the other games were fairly even and could have gone either way. Wando girls were impressive as well but struggled in the final third.
Match upcoming with plenty of story lines if you even look at high school soccer. Coach Savitz with a chance to go out on top in his final game against a school he will be coaching players from next year. Irmo Lexington Round 3.
Moments from kick-off and the place is packed.
Two rivals ready to put it in play in Gilbert.
Long shot by Lexington off the crossbar and the rebound headed over the bar.

Lower State just seems dominant this year. So much for the Upstate mystique.
Don't forget that Fort Mill went from 3a to 4a this year.
Last year the boys were state champs at 3a and the year before the girls were upper state champs. So that is quite a bit of talent dropping off from the upper state 3a teams.
As for 4a: Wando is competing against teams half its size so it winning should not be a surprise.
And the real question is this: if you rank the top 10 boy and girl teams in the state how many are upper and how many are lower?
I think the 'mystique' is based more on the fact that the upper state has a LOT of high quality teams as opposed to them being able to win the whole thing.
Look at the 3rd round of the playoffs:
One the upper side you had the 2,3,4 and 8th ranked teams. And NAFO is only ranked 8th because it lost the 4th and 7th team two times each.
On the lower you had 5, 6, 9, 11th ranked team.
I think it is safe to say that the upper is much stronger overall even if the south is winning the championships.
Goal Lexington disallowed for offside at the back post.
Shot for Lexington from 30 yards handled by the keeper. 21'

Garcia for Irmo threatening down the left side. He looks up to it.
Cross put out by Lexington for a corner. Knocked out for a second. Easily claimed by the keeper on a header back across frame. Referee stops play for an injury, he may need to calm the boys down a bit here.
Corner Lex on great build up play. Maybe tipped by the keeper and cleared.
I'll say this about the match - the weather is very nice at the moment.
Free kick Irmo 57'. Headed away.
Another Irmo free kick cleared now.
16 for Lexington really playing well this game.
Corner Irmo in the 62'. Wasted out of play.
Keeper for Irmo taken out of play and Lex hits it over the open goal.
Great heart by the Irmo keeper to save the first header. Looks like rain. Shot by Lexington off the post now. Inches from a goal.
Long throw now for Lexington. Lexington barely wide at the near post on a short cross.
Lond throw Irmo cleared off the line by a defender and now a yellow card for Irmo. Still 0-0 69'.

Jenkins shot for Irmo going wide but saved an a corner for Irmo. Punched out. Long throw headed out and cleared.
Long free kick collected by Lex keeper.
75' now. Still deadlocked 0-0. Referee really letting them play now.
Looks as if a set piece will decide this game in the end.
Long throw by Irmo claimed by the keeper.
Quote:
75' now. Still deadlocked 0-0. Referee really letting them play now.
Just a quick thanks for the updates. For those of us unable to watch in person or on TV, it's been nice to have a play by play.
Irmo shot over the bar 80'.
Irmo shot saved at the near post.
We are going to overtime again today. 0-0 after regulation.
MT4ME,
Just glad to promote the high school game for those who couldn't watch it live. Saw nobody was providing updates and figured I would fill the gap.
Overtime starting right now.
Good chance for Irmo and the header goes wide left.
Corner Lexington 85' headed out.

As you would expect the game is very physical. Going to 2nd 10 minute OT.

Thanks for keeping us updated.
Ortega for Lexington saves the first with his head and a second shot with his right foot. 16 for LHS again playing well. Shot from Lexington saved 95'.
Lexington break through snuffed out by Dukes at the back on the slide.
Hopefully one of these teams can score in OT. This game could go on all night.
98' Irmo beats the keeper at the edge of the 18 and misses the open goal wide left.
Irmo really should have scored there.
Third OT after 0-0 through 100 minutes. Already had one golden goal today and a chance there could be another.
#16 for Lex and #10 for Irmo have stood out thus far. Both have played very well. Sudden death starting now.
A lot of heart being shown right now by those young men. Long throw headed out by Irmo.
7 Garcia also showing some flashes for Irmo. Dangerous free kick for Irmo on left edge of box. Hit long out of play. 0-0 2nd 5 minute OT coming up.
Irmo keeper spills and collects just before the ball crosses the line.
Ortega cross cleared and a second cross collected by the keeper.
Ortega showing real quality now but all for naught. PK shootout to decide the Championship.
Smith for Lexington saved by Wages. He had an excellent game. 0-0. Henson scores past the keeper to the lower left corner. 1-0 Irmo.
Hicks scores for LHS 1-1. Riley saved to the right 1-1 after 2 rounds.
I wouldnt say dominant -2a was a golden goal game , 3A was an even match save for a questionable call late in the game, and 4A is going to PKs. The only dominant team was 1A
Hammond scores off a deflection. 2-1. Garcia upper 90 left post 2-2.
Lex goal almost saved by Wages. 3-2. Sawyer sends the keeper the wrong way. 3-3 after 4.
Wages with a great save. Shot for Irmo to win. Gossett for the win. Saved but the ball trickles in over the line. Looked like he thought it was saved but it spun over the line for a goal. WOW.
Congrats to Coach Savitz. Sometimes the soccer gods smile on you sir. Well deserving win and good luck at River Bluff next year. Unlucky Wildcats. First title appearance and what a game it was. You guys will be a force for years.
Great goalkeeping in the AAA and AAAA boys games. Top-notch players all around. Not one goal was scored in those games and those guys had a lot to do with it.
Amazing day of championship soccer matches. High level of play all day. Congrats to all the players and coaches.
Did no one else think the forward rotation of that ball stopped the moment it was deflected by the keeper? It was hard to see on the live stream, but the way it appeared that should've been a dead ball kick over the moment the forward rotation stopped ie when the keeper saved it.
According to NFHS rules it is a goal.
You are correct, I just reread that portion in the NFHS book it says until momentum is spent. Sorry, got my two sets of rules confused.
What a way for the State Championship Weekend to end! Good games all around. Enjoyed today. Referees were questionable during certain games, but overall not bad. 3A Championship refs were a great crew. Congrats to all participants in the games today!

In FIFA it doesn't matter if the forward momentum is spent or not. In FIFA, its up to the referee to decide when the kick is over.
You are correct on one the the refs were questionable, but in all of the games- especially the 3A game they were horrible- go to Greenville on line and view the 200+ photos of the game. You will obviously see that the game deciding call didnt occur the ref reacted to the opposing teams players- you will also see some horrible fouls that werent even called-or as the person who was blogging the game termed them "questionable non calls". The 3A game was evenly matched and should have been decided on the field not by the ref
You can't see any handball in any of the pictures. And to be honest a still photograph is not going to justify a play on the field.
What a great job by the Staff at Gilbert High School hosting the Finals. There were lots of bad comments on why this school was selected for these finals and painted such a negative picture of this facility. The only people-players-coaches-fans-parents etc. that didn't come to this event are now the only one's complaining. There were some very good matches Friday and Saturday with several going the full distance to be decided by kicks from the mark. Thanks to all the volunteers who gave up there time to help make this a great venue from start to finish. Kudu’s to AD Barry Harley who put in some late hours getting the complex ready and also lining the field and yes they were very straight. You don't see that very often.
But if you look at the film, from what I was told, you do see the arm move towards the ball and the ball rolls up the player's forearm and arm.
Facilities in Gilbert are great, however the field is too narrow I would have liked to see the 3a and 4a games on regulation size field there were very talented players that could have done more with the appropriate space
HH had some skilled players and I was impressed with the midfield play of lexington.
#4 from Hilton Head dribbled across the eighteen from left to right against #2 for Eastside. He attempts a shot and #2 semi blocks the shot. I think it was just a reaction from #15 from Eastside, but he sticks his left arm out. The ball hits his left front forearm and bounces right in front of him. Based on the video (WYFF video) #2 and #18 for Eastside look like they kind of know it was a handball.
They have the replay of all the games on the schsl.tv website. I guess you can make your own determination.
Outside of the field being too narrow for the caliber of event being hosted,I thought the Gilbert facilities were fine.
That was so close you could argue either way on the call.
By the letter of the law, yes it is a hand ball.
By the spirit of the law, wow, it is really tough to have that be the outcome of a match, let alone a state championship. Especially if the kid is only a yard in the box, and it comes off of a rebound like that.
The referee did a good job selling the call, if you slow the video down and then pause it, he is the only one signaling for a handball, none of the HHI players are.
In my 25+ years of experience I wouldn't call it, however, I can't argue against it being called as well.
Certainly looks like a hand ball on the video replay.
Although the quality is bad. The kid reacted before the whistle so I think he knew it was a hand ball.
Tough call though. He certainly didn't gain advantage off it especially since it bounces right back to the Hilton Head kid.
That is why the pro's put their hands behind their backs when in the box. Last thing you want is to lose a game over and inadvertent hand ball in the box.

Do you know what the dimensions of the Gilbert fields were for the Championship games? What are the dimensions of the field that your team normally plays on?

Gilbert's pitch measured between 63-64 yards in width (about 5-6 wider than regular season) and 114-116 yards in length.
The final PK that was almost saved but rolls in in the Irmo/Lex game has gone "viral." ESPN tweeted it earlier and also the website 101 great goals is now promoting the video as well. Pretty cool.
