I was told last night by the refs that did our scrimmage that our away uniforms have to be a solid color. Is this true and has anyone else been told this? We have striped away uniforms and all 3 refs said we wouldn't be able to wear them during the season.
I know about the home white jersey and white sock rule. Did I miss something about away uniforms?

That's news to me. We have adidas tiro unis and they have the three white stripes down the sleeve and have had no problems. It was my understanding that rule only applied to home whites.

page 24 of nfhs rule book
Rule 4-1
Visting team shall wear dark jerseys and socks. No wear does it say anything about stripped jerseys being against rules, I would call skip lax at the HSL.

Situation 4.1.1 D....Striped Jerseys are permissable for the visiting team as long as the predominate color is dark. Jerseys with equal sized stripes that have both dark and white stripes do not have a predominate dark color and would be illegal. (page 25)

My son just informed me that striped socks may no longer be worn, home or away. Any information on this?
Posted By: eMnAvA Re: Away uniforms - 02/24/14 03:09 AM
That is true from what we were told. The only thing that can have a different color to the solid sock is the Logo of the sock maker
Posted By: arrgy Re: Away uniforms - 02/25/14 02:37 AM
Situation 4.1.1 C the following are illegal socks: two different colored, multi-stripe, bumble bee, tie dye.

And the home team must wear all white, the visiting team can wear any color other than white.

socks can't have stripes!
what will be next?
solid color boots only?
fans must be dressed in school colors?
ball boys/girls must match ref uniforms?

You skipped a step. You forgot that they have to make the Players wear Solid Color Away Jerseys and then solid color boots

Does the white home/away black socks rule apply to the JV teams as well?
Posted By: Wayne Re: Away uniforms - 02/25/14 05:26 PM
No. The National Federation of High Schools does not legislate JV sports.

Thanks for the reply. Silly, IMO, but I guess we'll go buy some (more) new socks...

And of course we know who makes these rules for both High School and especially College...

Given the opportunity, I would've said no, but I wasn't so.... yeah

Technically, the rule about the uniforms was the culmination of the efforts of one referee who adamantly pushed the issue with the NFHS for about 7-8 years before it finally passed.

Seems he officiated a state final game (somewhere) and both teams showed up in light jerseys (one gold, one yellow) and it was confusing. He pursued this change to solid white jerseys/socks to quell the conflict.

Of course, my stance has been that a simple email or phone call with "What are you wearing?" would have sufficed and kept the old system.

The uniform rule change (along with the shin guard size requirement) certainly trivializes the true purpose of the NFHS. We have a ref pushing through a silly uniform change but we can’t make SCHSL allow for ties to stand in regular season games (no ot or pk).. Not to mention having the State finals at Stone Stadium. And what an embarrassment is Memorial stadium? And it’s a RCSD1 district stadium.

So to please the 1 ref who kept complaining, they make rules that become a thorn in everyone else's side. Smart.

One ref have that much say? I don't think so.

I'm not saying one official had that much sway, what I'm saying was relayed to us at the NSCAA Convention in 2011 & 2012 that a certain official made sure it was discussed (ultimately voted on and adopted) for about 7-8 years before adoption. I believe his persistence kept the matter in the foresight of the committee and did have some influence in making sure it passed.

Like they say, 'squeaky wheel gets the grease.'

What's next?

Any tape applied to socks to help secure shinguards must match the color of the sock. Black electrical tape on a blue sock, for example, is considered a "stripe" and is therefore illegal.

I'm not kidding.

I actually asked a NFHS representative if they had nothing better to do for the integrity of the game than legislate the color of tape used to hold up socks. He seemed somehow offended by the question.

This is the part that makes me laugh. How the tape somehow is such a big factor in uniforms. Because lord knows that wearing tape that doesn't match the sock is a detriment to the game
Posted By: eMnAvA Re: Away uniforms - 03/08/14 03:11 PM
In the rules the tape actually does have to match the sock color. Will it be enforced? Who knows, but it is a rule

I have had a few officials say things about the table during our scrimmages so far this season.
