2015 Tournament Rules

Home Team
Team listed first on the schedule is the Home team.

Points System

Points are scored as follows;
- a WIN nets the winner three (3) points,
- a TIE nets both teams one (1) point, and
- a LOSS nets the loser no (0) points

Bonus Points
Each Winner will receive one (1) bonus point per goal differential up to three (3) bonus points based on goal differential. Bonus points will only be awarded to the winner in each game.

Rankings
At the conclusion of round robin play, each team will be ranked based on points earned from wins and ties. Any situation in which two (2) or more teams have the same number of points the tie will be broken by using the following criteria in the order listed, one (1) after another as needed;
- head to head competition,
- bonus points up to three (3) points per game based on goal differential,
- fewest goals allowed,
- most shutouts and
- shootout from the penalty mark.

If more than two (2) teams are involved in a tie, the above criteria will be followed in order (omitting head to head competition) until all ties are broken. If these criteria are not enough to break a tie, Chris Taylerson will have absolute discretion to break the tie by any method he deems appropriate. There is no tie breaker related to most goals scored. No team will gain an advantage by running up the match score beyond a three (3) goal differential.

Forfeit Match Scores
In round robin matches, a forfeit will be reported as 1-0 score for ranking purposes. In circumstances in which a forfeited match is involved with determination of advancement in the tournament, all tie-breaking criteria involving bonus points, most shut outs, or fewest goals allowed will be determined on a per match average, excluding the results of the forfeited match. A team, which has forfeited a match, will NOT advance or be declared a finalist.

Tie Matches
All tied matches in round robin play will stand.

Group Matches
All group matches will be two (2) forty (40) minute halves with a five (5) minute half time period.

Finalist Match
There will be no Finalist Match this year.

Championship Match
The championship match to determine first (1st) and second (2nd) place will consist of two (2) forty (40) minute halves. If tied during regulation a coin toss by Chris Taylerson in the presence of Sheila Welborn and Lisa Beard will determine choice of goals to defend. Teams will go straight to penalty kicks to determine final standings after group play. NO OVERTIME will be played.

Shootout Procedure for Finalist and Championship Match
- All players on the field at the end of regulation may participate.
- Referee will decide the goal to be used for the shootout.
- Team winning the referee’s coin toss may elect to kick first or second.
- Alternating shots will be taken from the mark.

All-Tournament Team
Each head coach will be allotted slots as follows to vote for All-Tournament Team. Coaches will nominate his own players.
- 1st place team will name four (4) of their own players for all-tournament selections.
- 2nd place team will name three (3) of their own players for all-tournament selections.
- 3rd place team through 6th place team will name two (2) of their own players for all-tournament selections.

Juiced up field for second annual Bryan Ostrower High School Soccer Showcase

Quote:
Bryan Ostrower would have been proud of the tournament that local soccer people and Northwestern High School have cooked up for this weekend, beginning Thursday at Manchester Meadows.

The second annual Bryan Ostrower High School Soccer Showcase features 16 high school teams from across the state, including 12 ranked in preseason polls. The tournament is named after Ostrower, a Northwestern alumni and soccer player and referee who passed away from brain cancer in 2011. He would have been thrilled to officiate games between some of the Palmetto State’s top programs.

“You can find out a lot about your team when you’re playing really good teams,” said Northwestern boys’ soccer coach Dominic Wren. “We’re delighted to have all the caliber of teams we’ve got.”
Due to RHSD3 policy on canceling school tomorrow and the expected snowfall, there will be NO GAMES played Thursday.

Our plan of action for Thursday's games is as follows:

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2015 (evening session)

CARLISLE FIELD - 4:15 PM - Northwestern vs. South Pointe
BRANNAN FIELD - 4:30 PM - Nation Ford vs. Indian Land
CARLISLE FIELD - 5:45 PM - York vs. River Bluff
BRANNAN FIELD - 6:00 PM - Wando vs. Ashley Ridge
DISTRICT #3 STADIUM - 6:30 PM - Rock Hill vs. Brookland-Cayce
CARLISLE FIELD - 7:15 PM - Irmo vs. Socastee
BRANNAN FIELD - 7:30 PM - St. Joseph’s vs. Dorman
DISTRICT #3 STADIUM - 8:00 PM - Clover vs. Cardinal Newman

Now the problems come if the weather does not cooperate Friday, We have several options including letting individual school districts who have permission to travel to "scrimmage" and the result does not go to tournament standings, as to not penalize other teams who cannot travel, but still give a chance to get some game time in for those who'd like it.

We also may have to cancel everybody's first game and just "begin" the tournament Sat am with everybody on equal footing.

We will make the call regarding Friday at 10:00am to give teams staying over the chance to cancel rooms and not lose money.

The turf fields should be in great condition if we can teams into the venue!

Cheers,
Dom

Dom
Ok guys we've made two changes to schedule. It involves 3 teams (northwestern, dorman, st. Joseph's)

The 12:30 game between Nhs and St. Joes has been canceled.

St. Joes will play irmo in the semi final at 10:30am

Nhs will play dorman at 3:00pm at D3 stadium.

Good luck to everyone today.

Dom
SEMIFINALS
Wando 1-0 River Bluff
Irmo 0-1 (PK) St. Joseph's
Why was St. Joe's in the semi instead of Dorman?

Dorman was not allowed to spend Saturday night in Rock Hill or travel from Spartanburg Sunday morning due to their school district policies.

Therefore, the next team based on points was Northwestern and, as hosts, opted to allow St. Joseph's to play the Semifinal match so they could accommodate Dorman's request for a fourth match Sunday afternoon. Really a win-win for all teams - and the tourney!

Good job by NHS Coach Dom Wren, Tournament Coordinator Niel Welborn, and the rest of the Bryan Ostrower Showcase staff!
Thanks to Coach Dom Wren and Niel Welborn on a well-run tournament, especially given the weather conditions! We appreciated the opportunity to compete and know that the experience will make us a better team moving forward. Good luck the rest of the season to all teams that participated.
This is an excellent tournament using 1st class facilities (Manchester Meadows and District 3 Stadium). Thanks to Dom and Neil and the rest of the NW staff for putting on a great tournament, as well as Erwin Boonacker from STANNO for sponsoring. I hate we were unable to come up early enough on Sunday to participate in the semi-final match but our transportation policy is that no teams travel when ice advisories are issued. Thanks to Dom and Neil on accommodating us. No doubt that the quality of teams in this tournament will help each of us as we go through this season.

The Wando men's soccer team would also like to thank the Northwestern program, Coach Wren, and Mr. Welborn for an outstanding tournament. Count us in next year because we know you will do everything possible to allow teams to compete.
