Pinewood 3-2 ( PG has to make it a good game once right.. i mean it is still a rivalry isnt it)

I'm going to join the Ben Lippen crowd and put in my two cents on the PG PP game. I don't think that rivalry is on the same level as the BL CN rivalry, and therefore I'm saying PP 3-0. Hammond is going to be fired up to play at Ben Lippen, and I expect them to give Ben Lippen their best.

Interesting matchups coming in 3a with MB Chapin, and BC Socastee.

The Fort Mill V. Aiken matchup will surprise everybody i think, im not saying aiken will win but i think its gonna be a tough game, looking at the shake ups on fort mills team with losing their keeper(and how is he by the way?), and the fact that aiken almost always plays up to its competition excluding one or two exceptions

You're forgetting one key factor, Ben. I'll be Asst. Asst. Asst. Coach tomorrow ..that assures at least 3 goals.

Seneca 3 LE 1 Sorry Dude but Seneca is a good team. They have had some injurys, But I watched them play 3 games at my tour over spirng break and I can tell you they are very skilled in the mid-field and can score from several places. It should be a good game, but I feel the will get the win.

SC Soccer, Mark DiMaggio, the FM keeper, is done for the season with a lacerated liver.
Posted By: 2004striker Re: 5/2 predictions - 05/02/06 12:36 PM
In order for LE to hang with Seneca they need to challenge and foul a lot at mid-field to avoid any penetration.
It could be ugly 5,6-0 or close 2-1.

Have you ever attended a PG-PW sporting event? I am sure that once you have, your unbased assertion on the magnitude of their rivalry will change.
Posted By: benp Re: 5/2 predictions - 05/02/06 08:58 PM
Well, my assumption wasn't based on attendance, it was based on results, I think its been 4 or 5 years since a ben lippen cardinal newman game was decided by more than one goal, and let me assure you, during that time span, both ben lippen and cardinal newman have been more than 1 goal better than the other team. It's not as much of a rivalry in other sports, but the soccer game at Cardinal Newman is pretty much ben lippens most looked forward to sporting event of the year, and no matter what, both teams play like its the end of the world.
Posted By: benp Re: 5/2 predictions - 05/02/06 09:00 PM
And I didn't say the rivalry doesn't exist, just that it doesn't seem to be on the same level. This year, 4-0, last year, 5-1, and the year before that, i'm sure it was big.
Posted By: MP Re: 5/2 predictions - 05/03/06 01:54 AM
I never implied your assumption was based on attendance, so I don't know where you got that from. Rivalries have alot to do with game atmosphere and are not necessarily based on results, although close results always intensify things (To correct you though, "last year, 5-1" never happened. It was 3-1 first game and then 3-2 in double overtime).

I can also provide some proof that despite results, the PG-PW rivalry is just as intense as ever. PG-PW basketball games this season are perfect proof (PG went 0-5 against PW), and no matter what previous soccer results are, the PW game is always PG's most looked forward to game. In fact, this year's game was Senior Night for PG. This rivalry feeds off of other sports and gains its own intensity not only from results but from tensions, atmospheres, and emotions that are firmly rooted no matter what the results are.

I know nothing about the BL-CN rivalry and as such, I will not make statements comparing that rivalry to any other. I was merely trying to point out that perhaps witnessing a PG-PW game might make your opinion more credible because you made a risky assumption (based, as you said, entirely on results, which are not always reliable indicators) in saying that "pg-pw isn't on the same level as cn-bl."
Posted By: cap'n walt Re: 5/2 predictions - 05/03/06 01:59 AM
well since BL is god awful at Football and basketball(0-15 in region or something between the two) we pretty much rely on soccer and baseball.....and our dominate cross country team
Posted By: benp Re: 5/2 predictions - 05/03/06 02:47 AM
Sorry, last year they met 3 times, and one of those games was 3-1. All I said was that it isn't on the same level, not that it doesn't exist, and I have attended a basketball game, it was crazy, I was talking about soccer alone, Taylor's post sums up why ben lippen doesn't really have rivalries in other sports. Its like Dreher BC and Airport BC. Although Airport and Dreher are both rivals of BC's, during soccer, its the Dreher game that gets the hype, because they always play 'em close, whereas the airport game is merely one of those you have to play, and BC DOESN"T lose to Airport in soccer.
Posted By: MP Re: 5/2 predictions - 05/03/06 03:16 AM
Yes although even saying that it isn't on the same level is puzzling to me as you are relying completely on results and not experience or spectating. I'm pretty sure the game isn't one PW players "have to play" because every game is tense and unpredictable.

Anyways, it's not really important just that PG-PW shouldn't be counted out as one of the great soccer rivalries even though it is a relatively young one. The infamous PG-BL state championship matchup of 2003 was also one to remember and I hope someday (maybe in the near future) we will meet again.
Posted By: benp Re: 5/2 predictions - 05/03/06 03:47 AM
OK. I just got done talking to a spectator from todays game, a player at Wilson Hall, who told me that there weren't a whole lot of people there, and they weren't very loud, mainly just parents, and that after the first half, the game wasn't even that exciting.
BL Cardinal Newman game: around 20-30 Ben Lippen students tailgated before the game, and then got there for kickoff, plus the many that didn't, and all the parents. Throwin the many cardinal newman spectators in the small Cardinal Newman field area along with the barrel drums, and the plastic horns, and just the wildest of fans. Then, you take into account the intesnsity of this close game, and the excitement that came after each goal (players running into the stands, and all the self control in the world to keep the bench from running completely onto the field. Now you have a rivalry atmosphere. From what I've heard, along with the results of the PP PG game, it is a rivalry, but its just a game, and PP comes out on top nearly every time for the past 4 years. This is the first time Ben Lippen has EVER beaten Cardinal Newman twice, and you would have to go back to 2000 (if my memory serves me correctly) to find the last time Cardinal Newman beat Ben Lippen more than once in a year (2-1). I think that the point was, people were saying that the game would be close because its a rivalry game, and in an atmosphere like BL CN, yes, that is the case. The atmosphere just isn't at the PP PG game, and the results, and the recaps I've been told show it.
Posted By: MP Re: 5/2 predictions - 05/03/06 04:12 AM
Apparently you have completely misjudged my original point. You said that the PW-PG rivalry was not on the same level as BL. This statement, at the time of its giving, was completely unqualified, as you had never attended a PG-PW matchup and were basing your assumption completely on results and second-hand information. These qualifications for an opinion were, in my mind, relatively weak, and I felt that I should throw in my perspective, as a player who has played good matchups against PW for four years (and although PW has come out on top most often, that doesn't mean the games are boring or not exciting). Let me make it absolutely clear that nowhere did I make any statement comparing BL-CN and PG-PP; I prefer to actually have materials and experiences to back up my assertions.

I am delighted that there was such a great atmosphere at the most recent CN-BL game, and now I know a little bit more about their rivalry. I am a bit confused as to why you are out to prove CN-BL is bigger than PG-PW as my original comment was that perhaps witnessing a PG-PW game may change your thoughts on that specific rivalry, NOT your thoughts on which rivalry was bigger. I never intended to start a battle about which rivalry is bigger, for I simply do not care that much. I am sure, and you have provided ample proof in your last post, that BL-CN has a great atmosphere, but I can assure you that a second-hand recap of a game is nothing like being there. And, as a player, I can attest to the fact that there was a great, tense, and very exciting atmosphere at tonight's PG-PW game. Maybe BL-CN wins the prize for biggest rivalry; that, however, does not mean that "the atmosphere just isn't at the PP PG game." Each rivalry is different, each rivalry has its own unique characteristics. PG didn't tailgate for the PW game but made it a "Porter-Points" event (kind of a gay thing but basically reserved for the biggest games of each sport).

Until you strap on some boots and play actual soccer and work hard at it, don't tell me that "The atmosphere just isn't at the PP PG game." I've been playing against them for 4 years and have learned that you cannot measure the intensity of a rivalry from "the results, and the recaps [you've] been told." For the 3 PG seniors (and I'm sure the PW ones as well) the PG-PW rivalry is very strong, and the consistent fan support and schoolwide attention to these games testifies to this fact.

I think it is you my friend who is missing the point. You're obvious question
"why am is benp attacking the PP PG rivalry"
Answer:
first off, I'm not trying to discredit their rivalry.
People (mainly Ben Lippen people) were saying that PG would make this game close, because it is a rivalry game. My point was that PP and PG do not have the type of rivalry that BL and CN have had over the years, where despite differences in talent and current results, the game is ALWAYS close (I believe i stated this already, but they have split 4 years in a row, and this year ben lippen finally won 2, but one was a pk win. Also, the game has been decided by one goal for the past 5 years to my knowledge). PP and PG is a rivalry, and in other sports, they have a great atmosphere, and it affects the outcome (PP PG basketball game I went to was phenominal), but in Soccer, PP has been the dominate school since 2003, and will probably continue to dominate the region, and win the PG with ease.
My statement was simply to show why I didn't think the game would be as close as others, and obviously, my opinion was justified by the accounts I've heard, and the scores of the games.

However, because you are a PG player, and obviously completely offended, I will lighten my statement for you to this:

BL and CN have a great rivalry in which close games have been the story for as long as I can remember. PP and PG have an equally great rivalry, but close games are not a direct result of their competitions.

I hope this statement offends you less, and good luck vs. Wilson Hall, I'm sure you can keep THAT one close, but watch out for #11, he's probably the most talented player ya'll will have faced this year.

Also, as far as me strapping on boots. (I found this interesting) I was just talking to Cap'n Walt tonight, and it appears that before tonights game, I actually had the same amount of varsity caps as him, as I played in 5 games my sophmore year, including a start in the 3-2 win over TL Hanna, and substantial time in the Chapin and North Augusta games.
