Pre-Season Match-Ups that should whet our appetite for the week of Feb 16-20...
Feb 14th - The Weekend Classic
TL Hanna at Wando
Whoa Nelly! Must be nice to be able to travel four hours for a scrimmage! Expectations are soaring for both teams, Wando is expected to repeat as AAAA state champs and TL Hanna is hungry to make it past the 3rd round and exorcise some demons after the Mauldin game last year. Could be THE pre-season scrimmage of 2009. ESPN is rumored to be covering the match.
Feb 17th
Christ Church vs Dorman
Did Dorman lose enough to really drop off a bit? Will Christ Church be stronger than last year? Good early season test for teams with top 5 aspirations in AAAA and AA respectively.
Spring Valley vs Dreher
Two more strong Cola teams looking to make a statement. Dreher has acknowledged the myth of 5 R3PL Freshman as just that, and Spring Valley is always in the mix in AAAA.
February 19th
JL Mann vs Spartanburg
Rae Wilson is amazing and JL Mann comes in at the #2 spot in AAA. Spartanburg can beat anyone, anywhere, but graduated some talent in 08. Which team looks primed for a deep playoff run? Probably both.
Stink'n TLH can travel 4.5 hours to Charleston, but not return a stink'n game to Aiken 2.5 hours a way. Stink'n CJ...
Here are the scrimmages over the next 2 weeks between ranked AAAA teams:
Thu Feb 12 - (06) Irmo vs. (13) Byrnes
Sat Feb 14 - (01) Wando vs. (07) T.L. Hanna
Fri Feb 20 - (03) Dorman vs. (06) Irmo
There are no match ups during the next 2 weeks between ranked, same-class, AAA, AA-A, or SCISA teams.
Irmo vs Byrnes will be my favorite. For Byrnes to do so well and be so low, while Irmo did not finish as strong yet is so high.
Of course, if they coach in a similar fashion as some (AHEM) then everyone will play equal amounts and formation experiments will be conducted. Not going to be too much of an indicator...but still fun to watch

The younger CJ in my house says we are doing you a favor...
The younger one was always the funny one
Ahhh the days of the inner tube!
Sadly enough boys, now we'd have to replace the inner tube with three bmx bikes welded together, and your boat would need to morph into a monster truck. We'd be "Lake Bogging" like it's 2004 in no time!

Any recap of Irmo v. Ridge View? Score?
Ended in 0-0 tie. No overtime. PKS: Ridge View 4, Irmo 2.
This was definitely a practice game with liberal subbing. Also both teams were effected by injuries and illness.
Woodruff 3 Northwestern 0
Seems like Chapin is doing well this year. They will be a team to watch this season.
Quote:
DF 1 Chapin 0
Ugly game...The foxes were all over my beloved eagles. Chapin subbed freely and often DF did not it seemed as though there were several players on the bench that never saw the pitch. DF had atleast 8 R3PL players on the field at all times...at one point I actually counted 10 players that I know are R3PL players on the field at one time. DF played at an extremely quick pace, passed well, and controlled the field with ease they just could not get it together in the final 3rd. The goal came about midway through the second half...a beautiful goal from a ball slotted in behind the Chapin defense which was put away easily.(not sure who it was) If DF can get their scoring issues worked out they will be a force to reckon with going into the post season.
Dutch Fork at Clover this Friday night.
A good test for two very good teams.
Fantastic goal by Katie Moore for Eastside. Both teams were depleted by sickness and injuries. I thought Eastside looked better as the game wore on, not so much for us but it was great to get a lot of pitch time for the freshmen.
Northwestern 0
Woodruff 3
Very intertaining match. Both squads played wide open with Woodruff finishing their chances and Northwestern not able to do the same.
Spring Valley 0 - 0 Dreher
Fun game to watch.
Blythewood 5
RNE 2
Both teams played well- a bit of a physical match too. Lots of missed opportunities by both teams.
Great job Ladies!!!

Hurst - this indeed should be a great match. We look forward to the challenge!!
Riverside @ Mauldin tonight 7pm. Hope to see soccercrazy and company. Should be a good one.
Yup heard that Mavs Soccer Dad was in charge of scouting for the MHS Women's team as he came over to see the Riverside vs Summerville scrimmage Monday night!
Greenville 2 - Hillcrest 1
Aiken 1
SV 1
First half it appeared SV owned the game..half 0 - 0
Second half Aiken came out strong, dominated and scored goal mid-way through the half...SV finaly woke up last 5 minutes with multiple shots on frame and finally with time running out scored.
Walhalla 2
Westside 1
Walhalla scored twice in the first 5 minutes, Westside answered in the 14th. Game remained 2-1 for the rest of the way. Really cold night! Walhalla had the edge in shots 9-4. Well played match by both teams (save for those early first scrimmage jitters on Westside's part). Blame the coach, right...
Best of luck to the Lady Razorbacks in 09!
White Knoll 3
Barnwell 2
1-0 Barnwell at half
Very cold, windy game.
Barnwell outshot by WK something like 12-3 in first half...bad night for our defense...but White Knoll is a much improved team over last year!
Found out that White Knoll's girls head coach had stroke last night during their game and is in ICU. His sister who coached them tonight said he was doing OK. Keep him in your prayers!
Rock Hill 7
South Pointe 0
Rock Hill has a pretty good team this season. I'd say their best team ever. South Pointe will struggle this year.

Mauldin 2 Riverside 1
alright crazy and dad we need much more info than this...who scored? who had the better of the play?
Quote:
South Aiken 7

7 in a scrimmage doesn't sound like you Dale... your team must be very good with left feet, headers, shots after 10 touches...
I know, I know. 5 were scored between the last ten minutes of the first half and first ten minutes of the second half. One of those "Oh crap" moments...but the good kind.
Had a freshmen score a hat trick plus one before her replacement could get the hoodie, scarf, blanket, and warm ups off and get her out of the game. Chilly, chilly night.

Mauldin 2 Riverside 1
Wow, I thought Mauldin would be stronger. Maybe the rummor of injuries is true. Or maybe Riverside is stronger this year. I agree with CJ. We need more details, and where did they play?
Hello..Hello? There had to be some lowcountry teams playing soccer this past week..I appreciate finding out how the rest of the state is doing..I do!! Lowcountry coaches please posts some game results once in a while..Thank you..
What is going on with A. C. Flora's schedule?? They are only scheduled for 12 total games and only play 1 team in their region...?
Maybe the coach didn't submit it and the only games that show up are those that others reported.

Ditto for the other teams in their region: Chapin, Chester, & Lower Richland.
The full Chapin Schedule is on the school's web page.
AC Flora, Chester, and Lower Richland have apparently not published their schdules on the internet. At least not that I've been able to find.

Mauldin 2 Riverside 1
alright crazy and dad we need much more info than this...who scored? who had the better of the play?
The Mauldin v Riverside game at Mauldin was played in a bitterly cold wind in Mauldin's favor in the first half. It abated somewhat after half time. Both teams had an abundance of soccer talent on display as measured by the number of players on Premier teams. The first goal was scored by Riverside early in the game from a suspect free kick, which was taken a few feet from the diagonal of the penalty box. Hanna Alison kicked this ball perfectly; it was a goal from the time it left her foot, right into the far corner of the net and over the Mauldin Goalies outstretched hands. Riverside then took the game to Mauldin, shooting on sight, although the Mauldin goalie was not particularly troubled. Riverside looked like they wanted the game the most. Mauldin had the majority of the possession, and passed the ball around well but not up-field. The Mauldin forwards played well back and did not get a shot of any note off in the first half.
At the start of the second half, the Mauldin forwards were playing more into the Riverside half for a short period, with two forwards opposed by four defenders. They reverted to playing well back and the Mauldin domination of possession continued with Riverside looking the most likely to score. With about 15 minutes or less to go Mauldin started to turn their possession into some thrusts on goal with the whole team moving up, possibly due to a more defensive posture taken by Riverside. The first attempt came when Mauldin’s Gracie Boswell got her head onto a cross but did not get any power on the header, but it looked good. Shortly afterwards Ariel Whaley slightly miss-hit a ball that ran along the ground just inside the post and Mauldin were level. With less than two minutes left Gracie Boswell hit a rocket shot from just inside the edge of the penalty area. With the Riverside goalie well beaten the ball hit the underside of the bar, bounced to the ground on the goal line and it was pushed into the Riverside goal by Ali Simpson, making her Mauldin debut and a positive new addition to the team. Mauldin won with 3 viable attempts on goal, two resulting in goals.
Any scores for:
North Augusta
Emerald
Blue Ridge
Seneca
Wren
BHP
Now that was what I was looking for! Sounds like a great game.
@ Ben Lippen: 6
RNE: 2
Good scrimmage by both teams with some good physical play. Ben Lippen goals scored by Carrie Settle (2), Sara Ann McCain (2), and Lauren Jones (2). Excellent defensive effort by BLS and a fun game to watch. Great job ladies!
Quote:
Blue Ridge 2
Seneca 1
Brutal game. Marissa Sumwalt out for the year with a torn ACL suffered on a corner kick header in front of the goal, and Emily Nicholson broke her fibia and was operated on last night.
Caitlin Fountain was also seriously hurt but seems to have fared the best.
Seneca went up 1-0, and then Blue Ridge for the second time so far came back and won.
ROH: Heard about Emily earlier today, sorry to hear Marissa was injured also. That's a big blow to both teams.
Daniel 3
Hanna 3
Good match. Hanna scored the equalizer late off a direct kick after a very questionable call (right CJ?
)
DF-Clover
Very well-played match. Not a ton of substitutions as both coaches did a good job of managing this game as if it counted. Both teams were missing key players due to sickness, injury and ODP.
DF had the more dangerous chances but Clover more than held their ground. DF's #21 was the Gal of the Match, showing great pace up and down the right side and getting the goal for the Foxes.
ROH,
Terrible news. Marissa was well on her way to having a great season. Sorry it turned out this way.
Hopefully Emily and Caitlin will also recover to get back to 100%.

Good, clean spirited match. We are looking forward to the next time down in Irmo.
It was a fun, spirited match. When Craig asked me after the final whistle what I wanted to do, I said, "We're done." Spirited is one thing--freezing is another.
Sorry to hear about those injuries also. It's a tough way to start out.

Update on Saturday: Just learned from her coach that Emily (Seneca) had surgery on her broken fibia and tibia and had a rod placed in her leg. We wish her the best, and will pray for her recovery. She is a wonderful player, and her sense of humor when surrounded by medics, trainers, and coaches and players on the ground shows what a cool young lady she is. We love all soccer players, and Emily moved to the top of our list. Get well.

The match was played in three 30-minute periods. Irmo's Karli Farnham scored in the 1st period and Dorman scored in the 2nd. I believe the Dorman goal was scored by Emily Armstrong. Good matchup. Dorman has a seasoned team that played well as a unit. They knocked the ball around very well.

1st Ben Lippen Girls Alumni Game
Varsity-2
Alumni-4
Outplayed by the alumni hands down. We were too busy enjoying the fact that alumni were there to play very good soccer. Some good moments, but not a good game overall. The girls were tired from last night's scrimmage, but the varsity should have taken the win.
It was fun to see some old faces on the field and the girls enjoyed the fellowship. We played 8v8 or 8v9 and 30-minute halves for the game, so not a full scrimmage, but a good test for our girls against some excellent former soccer players.
Goals:
Alumni - Meritt Rollins (2); Jen Osman (1); JV Girls Coach Jacob Huss (1)
Varsity - Sammi Osman (1); Lauren Jones (1)
Just played in one today and I'm about 1/2 dead...
Dale, you didn't bump into any players and cause a big pileup did you?
He's only 1/2 dead because it rained at the beginning and they didn't get to finish.....right after he caused the pileup.
Yeah, I played in the boys game after the girls finished up and I'm just glad I'm still walking. A lot of fun, though!
Fort Mill varsity 4
Fort Mill alumni 0
Several former college players on the alumni, nobody older than class of 2004. A good practice match for the varsity. Nobody injured, thankfully.
I spose I should put up a small recap of the Wando vs Alumni game.
Varsity won 2-1 and rumours of a Wando demise have been greatly exaggerated. They are, as usual, still very good.
I noticed less of a passing pattern than back when I played; they seemed to try more long runs down the side that were a little more easily defended than a usual thread the ball game play.
First goal was a beautiful strike from--I think--outside the 18 that just curved in above the alumni keeper's head. Second, if I remember correctly, was knocked in from the back post off a cross or corner.
Alumni goal was off of a beautiful cross at an open back post as well.
The team seemed a little weak defensively as we got a lot of runs down the field on them and if you'd replaced old and/or gimpy alumni with a good, in-shape striker, the score could very well have been different. They were also a little slow to cover passing lanes in some instances.
Otherwise, the girls were very aggressive on 50/50 balls and even if they hadn't been playing out of shape alumni, I imagine they'd win a large percentage of them out of the air anyway. They've got the look to pass still and are a definite threat outside the box and on corner kicks; every corner they took was well placed and well struck.
Their bench was also very strong and if Coach Champ subs even half as much as she did during this scrimmage, they'll easily endure any game without losing momentum with subbing.
It was also ridiculously frigid that night and it was, of course, a scrimmage against a lot of people who haven't played in years, but it was fun.
PS. It is very disturbing to think of the Class of 2008 as alumni. I'm getting older =\.

Only the ones that deserved it
CJ, let me pull that dagger out of your back! (i.e., can't travel to scrimmage us but can go to Wando, etc.). Note to self: don't tick this guy off.
I heard Eastside beat Byrnes 6-1. Anyone got details?

Maybe Westside should be on the radar - sweet! Christ Church is well coached, plays solid soccer, is ranked, and basically does it right.
Nice job Westside (and Christ Church)!
