The Myers Park Lady Mustangs, ranked #11 in North Carolina 4A, visited Bob Jones stadium last night to take on the Lady Jackets of Fort Mill. The first half finished scoreless, with Myers Park wasting one quality chance when a Lady Mustang forward sent an absolute sitter from six yards out over the crossbar.

The second half contained more quality end to end action and Myers Park struck first in the 46th minute when the Lady Mustang's Morgan Corbett finished off a short cross from in tight, nicely tucking the ball between the Fort Mill keeper and the near post. In the 70th minute, Fort Mill earned their only corner kick of the night and Ashleigh Sheets buried Chelsea Peterson's service into the back of the net to make the game even.

Fort Mill had one more opportunity to win the game in regulation. With less than five minutes remaining, Danielle Schmitt deftly lifted the ball over a Myers Park defender and ran around her for a left-footed half volley that she pushed just wide.

Myers Park was surprised to be looking at OT in a regular season match but they lined up and played through the first five minutes scoreless and then switched ends. In the second OT, Sheets wove her way through the left side of the Myers Park defense, muscled-off a defender and drew the keeper to the near post. Sheets sent a beautiful square pass across the box to Nicole Bainbridge who knocked it into the open goal, sending the Fort Mill faithful into short-lived euphoria.

Myers Park immediately grabbed the ball out of the back of the net and lined up for the kick off. Through perseverence and hard work, the Lady Mustangs earned a corner kick with just over a minute to play. Myers Park's Kelly Kerns spun her corner kick over a packed goal box and into the net to miraculously draw the game even.

For the third time this season, Fort Mill failed from the penalty spot and Myers Park was awarded the victory 2-2 (4-3 PK's).

It was real nice to see a great game in York County. The folks down in the low country are fortunate to witness great regular season matches between teams like Wa-WA-JI-HH-S'ville. We don't get that many up here and it was great to see. Myers Park played very well and earned the win.

Fort Mill is now 14-3, with all three losses decided by penalty kicks. Fort Mill has now yielded 3 goals to the opposition in 17 matches. Last night was the first time Fort Mill has dropped a game at home in over two years. The last team to beat the Lady Jackets in Bob Jones stadium was South Mecklenburg HS on March 15, 2004 (5-3). The last South Carolina HS team to beat Fort Mill at home was Spring Valley on March 28, 2003 (1-0).

High School Sports Report should hire you...no questions. Good write up, Hurst. Sorry about the result.

Yeah, me too...

Hurst IS very good at this. Singing karaeoke (sp)and girls high school soccer are his twin passions!!

It is too bad we don't see more of this level of play. For York County girls, we gotta play Charlotte teams to get a good match.

For the record.....in JV action, FM girls dominated Myers Park 2-nil, in a game not that close.

big daddy..

too bad being a president of a soccer club is not a passion!
Posted By: Big Daddy Re: Fort Mill - Myers Park - 04/14/06 12:22 PM
Loc Dog,

Hurst isn't President of a soccer club. When he was......he was equally as passionate about that. Hurst did a lot to help grow York COunty soccer.....he and I didn't always agree on stuff but I never doubted his passion or committment to the kids.

Keep the mudslinging out of this.....its ancient history.

William Aiken: Which guy?

This guy. Willie is all about the double standard.

L-E Dude: Oh...I get it...because you usually post on the boys side, right? I thought it might mean the person who typically posts on his own message board. Now that I "get it", it seems applicable either way.

I think Jack has something against Chapin Dad and www.foreversoccer.com . I don't understand, maybe you can clarify. Guy got tired of all the smack talking and high school/college kid yo mama post that he started a parallel site. There aren't a whole lot of people on there like this one, but it serves the purpose of talking soccer without distractions. I don't think he's trying to undercut scsoccer, just giving high school soccer more exposure. High school football has scvarsity.com (more liberal and free speaking) and pigskinprep.com (one attack and your out). The more the merrier. So, what gives, Jacky?
Posted By: Jack Rozier Re: Fort Mill - Myers Park - 04/14/06 09:14 PM
..just not wild about him/you promoting all over this site. I know any exposure is good exposure..and that the girl's game definitely needs it.

Plus.. how can you have FM ranked #2 in 4A boys. Just..no.

..call me a homer.. whatever.

..friends?

Ft. Mill boys are not ranked #2 in state, more like #10. The girls are ranked #2, and deserving.

..I just copied that from the site. Enlighten me?

Don't know about the rankings, so I'll have to pass on that topic. Come on, even Kyle is a member of that site. Every man is entitled to his opinion, but if Kyle supports the site then I'm pretty sure he doesn't mind links to it about Chapin games. Besides, I'm a moderator over there. What could possibly go wrong!??!

Friends? Of course. I'm just happy the girls forum is actually picking up some business for a change.

>>[William Aiken] I don't understand, maybe you can clarify. Guy got tired of all the smack talking and high school/college kid yo mama post that he started a parallel site.<<

I've avoided this as long as I can and will probably regret this post...but here goes.

There's a lot of "smack talking and high school/college kid yo mama" posts on the girls side of this message board? I don't see it.

Look...I'm all for people starting as many message boards (and clubs, for that matter) as they want. And I'm all for the message board containing anything folks want it to contain -- arcade games, gambling, pictures of dogs, cats, wives, daughters...whatever. But your rationale for its beginning doesn't seem all that plausible.

John is of course free to start anything John would like -- and I guess that you guys are free to advertise it on this board every chance you seem to get (although it doesn't smell quite right to me, either) -- but to state that the message board was started due to a deficiency in this one rather than what seems obvious to most folks who read this board a lot doesn't seem quite right.

A lot of the smack talking post were deleted by myself after fun comments about coach/player relations were made. I think you were heavily involved in the CESA/Columbia takeover/invasion at that time and missed it. I speculate mostly on the reasons for its creation. I could be very wrong in that nature. In fact, the site was formed in the middle of the mudslinging and I...assumed that was the reason. John will have to speak out on that one. You make one comment I don't think I can translate. I don't know what reason seems obvious to most folks . Why don't you come out and say it?

He was getting owned right and left here in discussion/debate.

Oh. I wasn't aware of that, so I thank you for your patience. Very good.

Man, talk about getting off topic. About that Fort Mill vs. Myers Park game, it was a good one
Posted By: Coach Young Re: Fort Mill - Myers Park - 04/16/06 05:22 PM
TOPIC POLICE!!!

So Joe, back to the topic. How has FM's pk problem been developing recently? I know this is their weakness, but have they been making progress each shootout?
Posted By: Jack Rozier Re: Fort Mill - Myers Park - 04/16/06 08:44 PM
OH YES! ..back on topic!

FM has no real competition in their area.. man..glad we re-hashed that.
Posted By: anonymousjoe Re: Fort Mill - Myers Park - 04/17/06 01:08 AM
well, I'm gonna go with no on that one. According to a member of the team, the team goes through two rounds of PK's at practice. The equivillance of a basketball player taking two foul shots at practice.
Posted By: anonymousjoe Re: Fort Mill - Myers Park - 04/17/06 01:16 AM
i mean, that may be a common occurance in all high schools, but it just doesn't seem like much practice.
Posted By: Coach P Re: Fort Mill - Myers Park - 04/17/06 08:46 PM
2 rounds of PK's in practice is a higher percentage time of practice than the % actually taking PK's in a game. The average basketball player takes a lot more free throws in a season than the average soccer player takes PKs. The majority of soccer players probably take 0 PKs per season in games.
Posted By: Coach Young Re: Fort Mill - Myers Park - 04/18/06 12:34 AM
Good point. Hard to justify practicing something that rarely occurs.

Percentages vs Importance

That is true
