Starts tonight. 16-team field. Who is the favorite? What are Clover's chances of coming out of this still undefeated?

Don't know anything about Clover, but they will face tough competition from the Midlands schools. As host, Airport is always a force. And don't count out the SCISA teams of Ben Lippen and Cardinal Newman. Both could win it all.
Last year, Ben Lippen beat Myrtle Beach and Barnwell, but lost to Airport.
It has always been a well-run tournament and some great soccer for the teams and spectators.

Past tournament champions:
2004:Ben Lippen School
2005:Emerald High School, Greenwood
2006:Airport High School

Woodruff, Clover, & Airport are all looking very good. Tough call.
Posted By: LF Re: Airport Girls Tournament - 03/15/07 06:49 PM
Cardinal Newman will win this one....
Posted By: Coach P Re: Airport Girls Tournament - 03/15/07 06:53 PM
The winner of the CN vs Woodruff match in the first round should go far. That may be the pairing of the tournament.
Posted By: Hurst66 Re: Airport Girls Tournament - 03/15/07 07:10 PM
Looks like a very competitive tournament. Keep us posted....I look forward to reading the game recaps.

6 p.m. game

Playing two starters down, Ben Lippen lost to RNE 3-2.
Won't even say a word about the refs.

West Florence plays loser of Clover and Boiling Springs match.

Posted By: Hurst66 Re: Airport Girls Tournament - 03/16/07 12:36 PM
Clover had a real battle on their hands last night. They got outshot by Forestview (Gastonia, NC) but still managed to pull out a 1-0 win. I heard the refs turned a blind eye to most of Forestview's physical tactics. Clover's goalscorer needed medical attention again last night (possible broken nose). When these two teams met two weeks ago in a "friendly", this same girl was sandwiched and received a concussion.

NOTE TO SELF: Don't schedule Forestview next season.

Hope the Lady Blue Eagles have something left in the tank for the Airport Tourney this weekend.

Hurst66:

I hope many teams have something left; I have noticed too many matches scheduled too close together for many teams. Spring is tight and I think ADs and coaches some times confuse soccer for baseball. . .

The tournament matches are 30-min halves—that will help. But the tournaments and 3 matches a week. . .Are we asking too much of high school soccer players? I think so.

Now I am crossing my fingers for the rain to be out of here by match time. Good luck and safe playing to all.
Posted By: Hurst66 Re: Airport Girls Tournament - 03/16/07 01:16 PM
Good luck to all down there in Columbia. We will be dealing with the same elements up here in Rock Hill this weekend as well.
Posted By: Coach Young Re: Airport Girls Tournament - 03/16/07 01:23 PM
4 scrimmages
16 games and 2 tournaments or
18 games and 1 tournament

If my girls weren't being whisked away during the weekends (and sometimes weekdays), they'd have time to recover and be less prone to nagging injuries. Then again, it's exposure. So what do you do? Take away their spring break to spread the games out (do you have SB plans you'd be willing to cancel for 2 HS matches)?

Don't put your child's safety on your coach. If you no likey...there is always something you can do about it
Posted By: cat's cradle Re: Airport Girls Tournament - 03/16/07 01:33 PM
M*A*S*H:

My comments were about how ADs and such misunderstand, still, soccer. And, FYI, when I was a head coach, my AD did ALL scheduling for ALL sports. Our hands were tied. I did beg and plead. . .

I would lobby for a 2-match standard per week with a limited number of 3-match weeks instead of a total number guideline.

My child's coach wouldn't jeopardize her safety—or the safety of any of his players. And I would NEVER imply or say that. But he doesn't do the schedule either. . .
Posted By: Coach Young Re: Airport Girls Tournament - 03/16/07 01:40 PM
I do our schedule and try to mix the "compact" week with the non region games I feel confident about and can play high numbers. There is a bill that would push spring sports forward 2 weeks to allow basketball more time to finish without overlapping. I wonder how that will affect things.
Posted By: Coach Young Re: Airport Girls Tournament - 03/16/07 01:43 PM
You said "AD's and coaches" thus my post. What do you mean "misunderstand"?

Clover up 4-0 with five minutes to play.
Winthrop does it!!!!
In regulation:

Cardinal Newman 2
Woodruff 2

CN in PKs.

WHS played without their center mid and leading scorer (at a funeral) and found themselves down 2-0 with about 15 mins left. Jessica Thomas was moved from sweeper to attacker and leveled the match at 2-2 by the end.

Regretfully, the match started with only one ref, and I guess I jinxed WHS by saying last two matches had excellent ref'ing. Terrible refs at this match. Excessive physical play was allowed by CN. A shame. WHS showed great heart.
Aiken 4 Daniel 2

Cardinal Newman 4 Aiken 0
Give credit where credit is due, Ron.
Field 1 dimensions 57 by 116 yards.
Field 2 dimensions 54 by 108 yards.

The 2nd ref was delayed getting to the 1st game(Cardinal Newman vs. Woodruff) due to a wreck on the interstate.

Lady Blue Eagles crash at Airport. Congrats to the hosts for handing the only undefeated team in 4A their first loss.
good job airport lady eagles and i heard today a guy talking saying woodruff and cn were the best teams in this tournament form the way there game looked they didnt play like it
I saw Cardinal Newman play both games and in the Woodruff game, they were not that strong in the 2nd half; however, they were fantastic in their 2nd game. They will be very tough to beat.

congrats to the AHS girls team for making it to the finals. Good luck tonight and the rest of the season. Way to represent Airport!
Daniel 3
Woodruff 2

WHS arrived in Cola Saturday morning uninspired, sluggish and careless. Daniel capitalized in the second half and took a well-deserved win.

WHS redeemed themselves with more disciplined and focused play.

Scoring for the tournament for WHS: Jessica Thomas (6), Amanda Tinker (3), Hanna Kelly (1), Megan Sumner (1), Paige Sumner (1)

Congratulations Keith on running an excellent tournament & being able to be focused enough to win it all too! Field 2 was a great introduction to English soccer for most of the girls. Thanks for the European flair!
Posted By: CoachMorris Re: 2007 Lady Eagle Classic - 03/19/07 04:24 PM
R. Johnson--thanks for the congratulations--the AC Flora vs. Airport game as well as the Wade Hampton-G vs. Cardinal Newman game were very close(both decided in pk's) and excellent final games. No problem on the European flair...and congrats on your 2 wins. I am sure MASH will add up your total now--haha just kidding--thanks for attending and good luck this year!

By the way--we know MASH struggles with his math and probably cant count that high.

By the way--he did give you credit where credit was due...

Well run tournament CoachMorris! From a Daniel parent's perspective I would have to say "You done good".

Some observations:
Aiken is much better than their record indicates.
MASH jinxed us.
Playing on the pasture-er-field 2 made for some interesting bounces.
Daniel can win a game with 4 starters at home.

Thanks again and good luck the rest of the season.
Posted By: gunners04 Re: 2007 Lady Eagle Classic - 03/19/07 06:38 PM
Kudos to the Airport tournament organizers. Even battling one and a half inches of rain, the event ran on schedule and with few problems. Saturday offered some very good soccer games. Congratulations to Coach Morris for a successful tournament and to his team for winning the finals.

More observations:
While field 2 was very soft, the wind created more problems than the turf.
Was impressed with Daniel. They gave Ben Lippen a handful on Saturday.
Also impressed with Wade Hampton-G. Playing with 11 girls and finishing in 3rd place.
The last two games of the tournament were very exciting. Both games ended in PKs. The Airport/Flora game was hard-fought and offered a bit of everything in the match. A super game.
