Berkeley 0
Fort Dorchester 1

Down-to-the-wire match at the Fort. Berkeley misses a PK opportunity that would have given a lead late in the second half--great job by the Fort's backup keeper collecting it. Not really sure about the yellow that led to the PK and the keeper substitution, but I wasn't going to complain too loudly.

Fort kept up a pretty intense attack; they score with less than 2 to go after Berkeley's keeper comes out hard on the ball and collides with a Fort player (clean play, just both going hard for the ball). She goes down hard and Fort wins possession and gets the shot on open goal for the win.

Great game on both sides...I enjoyed it even if we didn't pull off the win.
Greenville 2
Seneca 1

GHS' Goals: Lewis, Tollison Assist: Tollison, Waters
Seneca Goal: Goss

The Seneca goal came from a very cheeky corner kick: A player got ready to take the kick when her coach called "Let Krystal take it!" The first player touched the ball anyway, and Krystal jogged over to the corner flag to switch places with the first player and just dribbled the ball all the way from the flag into the box and scored. Good morning! Nice lesson. Thank you.

I see that Dorman beat Mauldin, 1-0.

Any details?

Spartanburg 7 Gaffney 1

Mauldin is one of the most athletic teams in the state. They played great soccer and we were fortunate to make it to a shootout and won the game in penalty kicks 3:1. Mauldin is much better then last year and very well coached.
Sarah Schaidle is the real deal at center mid for them. She is fun to watch direct their attack.
Aiken went up 2-0 in the first half with little attack from Evans (both goals were off of rebounds). In the second half Aiken dominated the first 15 minutes & scored a long high shot from the left side of 18. Then Evans went to work to score on its first good attack with a high shot to the right corner from just inside 18 from the left. Then they scored a few minutes later on a one on one breakaway down the right side of the field. Aiken scored on a free kick that hit the inside of the crossbar& went straight down & in. From the kickoff Evans took the ball through Aiken's defense & the goalkeeper came out (& what appeared to this unbiased coach as a 50/50 ball) & slid & collided with the Evans attacker. PK awarded & converted with under 2 minutes remaining. Evans did not have any more chances in the final 2.

Aiken hit the crossbar at the 20 second mark & handled Greenwood for the next 15 minutes while only scoring 1 goal. The next five minutes the tide started turning & the last 20 minutes Greenwood had more of the play. The second half Aiken played pretty well controlling most of the play with sporadic Greenwood attacks & one fantastic shot to the bottom right corner with the save of the season for our goalkeeper. Aiken scored 3 more scattered throughout their attacks on 2nd chances and put backs. The last 5-10 Greenwood had their sweeper up top and she took to the defense & almost broke through to goal several times. Greenwood hit the post on what seemed to be a sure goal & the game ended with Greenwood almost putting the ball away.

Blythewood 0

Let me go ahead and announce Tony and his buddy are Grade A good fellas. Ok, moving on.

Blythewood gave as good as they got in this physical match up. I know he was disappointed in the result, but the Lady Bengals are a quality squad that has enough talent on the field to do some damage in the region and playoffs (see 2007). They just caught on us a night when things are finally starting to click. With 4 goals in the first half from wide play, middle runs, and even a pk - the second half was just as intense and there was no let up in play. After the fifth goal came in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half, Blythewood said "no more" and played with fire the remaining thirty minutes. Several chances were thwarted by great saves in the first and second halves.

Not much other than Easley won 2-1 in PKS. Southside scored first with a goal from #11. And #5, Southside's standout midfielder and ODP player, was on crutches and did not play due to an injury sustained against Christ Church the night before. Best wishes to her and to both squads!

The guest actually had more total shots and never let up. Worked it well out of the back and had a lot of skill on the field. The Lady T-Breds we're fortunate to finish a higher percentage of theirs and get the win. Very physical match with two RV players going down and out. We'd like to wish our friends a speedy recovery. Very educated and friendly coaching staff. We'll come see you guys next year.

Good win for West Ashley and Coach Drew. This team is very young. They have extremely strong freshmen and sophomore classes along with good senior leadership. The 2 goalies are a sophomore and a freshman. This team will get better as the season progresses. Keep an eye on them over the next few years.
That's a great win for West Ashley, over a Hilton Head team that I think will play for the 3A state title.

CC,
I agree about Woodruff. I talked to Coach Gomez before the match and his philosophy is the same as ours, they want to go out and play the best competition they can in preparation for their playoffs. I really enjoyed watching their physical style and it brought the same out of our team. I especially enjoyed watching their center mid #9 Casey Black. She plays the position the way it is supposed to be played.

The Woodruff fans are also to be commended. They brought a great and vocal crowd to the electric city. With the strong showing in the JV game, I would say that Woodruff is going to be good for a long time.
Oh, and our school is named for a guy's last name, not a girl's first. Lose the "h" on the end!

Although I wasn't at your game last night, Woodruff usally plays a 4-4-2 with Casey up top. Casey covers as much ground as any forward playing HS in SC. You were correct in saying she plays the position the way it's supposed to be played.
Correct, SF, Casey starts and plays F in high school, along with another freshman. . .

Casey scored the first goal and created the second (finished by her fellow freshman, Megan). Both were the result of skill and determination—both qualities Casey brings each match.
technically, you guys are absolutely right. She is a forward, but the way they play is almost like a 4-5-1 because she checks back to the ball and distributes through the middle like a midfielder. Really more of a creater than a target forward. Regardless, she is a beautiful player.

Tell me about it. Geez...
Just wanted to take a quick moment to thank and compliment the fine folks at North Myrtle Beach and Carolina Forest for hosting us for a couple of games this weekend- NMB coaches Lori Gormam and Newt Merricks along with Carolina Forest AD Bubba Lewis and coach Carrie Lysik. The girls, coaches, parents, and I all look forward to doing it again next year if possible. Thanks also to the very courteous and helpful training staff and others from both schools who helped make this such a great first overnight trip for us. I would strongly suggest anyone else wanting to make a trip to the beach for a weekend of games to try and give these people a holler, an absolutely great group of people at both schools.

It was a great weekend but perhaps an ominous way to venture out on our programs first ever overnight trip with the crazy weather that blew through the state making us change our plans and forcing us to stay an extra evening. I have to report to the parents that the girls were absolutely devastated to have to leave dinner on Saturday night and go back to the beach house for another night away instead of coming straight back to Blythewood. From top to bottom it was a great team building experience and hopefully preparation for the really important part of the schedule coming up with region play starting tomorrow as well as the playoffs hopefully following.

A hearty thank you to all the parents who made it down to catch a match or two, have some birthday cake (Happy 16th Birthday Allison), eat some pizza, and support the girls (and the coaches) with their enthusiasm and energy.

An extra special thanks to my wife for letting me attempt this madness and just being so supportive and interested in everything that is going on during soccer madness…err season!

Further extra special thanks to our assistant coach/prayer man/billiards rules aficionado- Tim Pifer and to add on coach/bus driver for the trip- Fletcher Spigner for his “Intense-Focus” during “add-a-turk” and games of pool.

An additional extra special thanks to the mothers who helped make this possible- Margie Malone and Tonya Kurtz who were brave enough to stay in the house with us as well as Cathy Louthian, Deanna Mizzell, Cindy Eargle, and Patti King who helped organize and pull everything together.

Finally, a huge thank you to the young Lady Bengals for being such a great group of kids to coach for and with whom I am very proud to be associated with not only on the soccer pitch but also out and about in the restaurants, convenience stores, and just in public in general. The words “you make me proud” don’t do you enough justice.

Thank you Ladies for a great –and very memorable- trip!!!!

Erika, get back to “BEASTLY” soon!!!!!

Coach King

(Did I forget anybody? Knowing me I probably did, so an EXTRA big thanks to them as well…. sheepish grin….)
Gotta love the beach programs.
