This is by far the most ludicrous alignment handed down in a long series of head-scratchers.

Amazing.
Posted By: futbol(soccer) Re: 2009 Regions - 04/04/08 06:07 PM
So region 5 has 8 teams only 4 of which can make playoffs. But other regions only have 5 teams??? how is this fair?

Then you are allowed 16 games in a season. I assume you still have to play everyone twice (that's 14 for the mathematically challenged) that leaves 2 out of region games and tournaments (which potentially could be playing in-region team)

Who is the braniac behind this alingment????? OOOPSSS!!!!

I apologize profusely I did not mean to step on the toes of the mighty football machine. I beg forgiveness I am immediately changing my soccer balls for footballs.... Iwill immediately send money for the football machine's...err...... machine....so they can claim they own everything....

This is all BS. It reduces travel for football but not for the other sports
Posted By: Jack Rozier Re: 2009 Regions - 04/04/08 06:41 PM
The thing is..it doesn't even make sense for football!

RNE traveling to Aiken?
Spring Valley to Rock Hill?
Rock Hill and Northwestern in different regions?
Lugoff-Elgin to Chapin (Camden across the river and in a different region)??
Carolina Forest to Sumter?

I'm curious what the issue is with having more/smaller regions and just having a different equation/system for determining playoffs -etc. With two years to figure this out..I just can't believe this is what we're given.

That's a lot of cash in gas that could be turned around, just to think up a new formula...

I would not complain too much about poor BE. You are inviting comments about whether or not BE is properly classified as a 2A school due to their ability to recruit and give scholarships; have kids from 3 different counties enrolled; etc.....

Some time it is prudent to lay low and remain silent.

Any schools用rivate or public葉hat have attendance policies that include students/athletes OUTSIDE the zoned attendance area should be automatically AAAA. Period.

I don't think I understand this one. Since private schools don't have zoned attendance areas, how can they be considered to have "students/athletes OUTSIDE the zoned attendance area" which does not exist?
Posted By: cat's cradle Re: 2009 Regions - 04/04/08 11:08 PM
All private schools lie within zones that exist for the closest public schools right? While that attendance zone doesn't apply to the private schools technically, it SHOULD if they wish to participate with public schools that do have to abide by those restrictions.

Many private schools do NOT choose to participate with public schools, thus they all play by the same rules.

Currently, some private schools are allowed to participate with public schools but live by different rules (both academic and athletic).
Posted By: Coach Chass Re: 2009 Regions - 04/05/08 03:02 AM
Here's what the League has to say, from the SCHSL Constitution, page A-28:

POLICIES GOVERNING CONTESTS WITH NON-PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS
Non-public high schools are either members or non-members insofar as the League's rules and
regulations are concerned. The non-public schools that are members of the League must abide by all
rules and regulations of the League. The non-member schools must follow only minimum requirements
in order to compete with member schools.
LEAGUE MEMBERSHIP - A non-public high school may become a member of the League if such
school is accredited by the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges and the principal
of the school agrees to conform to all rules and regulations of the League.

Before being considered as a member of the League, the non-public school must clearly define its
attendance area as one of the following: (1) the attendance area of the public school in whose
attendance area the school is located, (2) the school district in which the school is located, and (3) the
county in which the school is located.

Now, defining your attendance area as an entire district or county isn't quite the same as having it restricted to a single-school attendance area in most cases...but it is considered legal by the League. So, a private school can RECRUIT from a multiple-4A attendance zone, but as long as they only ACCEPT 2A numbers, that's where they compete.

Hm. Why would anyone consider that an unequal advantage?
Posted By: WandoFan Re: 2009 Regions - 04/05/08 03:18 AM
Coach Chass, sorry, my comment was more of disrepect for how the region matchups are put together than for an individual school. I'm sure our football opponents don't mind seeing Wando in their region.

Scoring goals is kinda the intent of the game, but after about 4 goals it becomes more uncomfortable than fun .
Especially against a well liked coach and a group of girls that give it all they've got.

Best of luck to your girls the rest of the season! I hope you win the rest of your games. Except the rematch on the 15th. We don't need that much "fun".
Posted By: Coach Chass Re: 2009 Regions - 04/05/08 03:59 AM
No offense taken; I understand the dilemma on both sides! Everyone would benefit from a balanced, competitive challenge; it's really no fun for good, sportsmanlike people to be on either side of an uneven matchup. Plus the fact that a top-level team will be better off come playoffs time if they've honed themselves against strong competition in the regular season.

I really think teams like mine benefit more from playing teams like Wando than the other way around; we've gotten better by playing against some of the best--having something to reach for is a good thing.

And seriously...we will do our best to make it a little more fun next time around--for your sake and ours!

Your school is defined by attendence zones and you can recruit outside of that zone BUT that family has to move within your zone to play for you..Say I start a private school on main st in Moncks Corner and I want a competitive girls soccer program...I get to recruit within any zone I want AND the families do not have to live in a zoned area..they just have to provide transportation to my school just blocks away from your school...Sound fair to you?
Posted By: coldhardtruth Re: 2009 Regions - 04/05/08 11:43 AM
Does beating up on 2A schools make B.E. better? The ability to bring players from anywhere does...They should play where they would have some competition to get better.
Down here that would be 4A ball.
Playing the stronger teams does not always make you better when you can never find a way to win.Your disadvantage is no soccer club in the area so your players are not getting soccer year round at competitive levels
Posted By: cat's cradle Re: 2009 Regions - 04/05/08 12:05 PM
Coach Chass, et al:

I know this is about region realignment so excuse my tangent. . .and thanks for the info, Coach Chass (and I hope your question was sarcastic. . .).

Let's not ignore two things:

(1) A few private schools have dominated A and AA sports with an unfair advantage over their public school rivals. If anyone thinks the dominance is for any reason other than the unfair advantages, that is naive.

(2) Some PUBLIC schools have unfair advantages because of public school choice in SOME counties (thus larger population from which to "recruit") and not others. . .which I feel also is an unequal playing field.

There are many instances in the state of students attending schools primarily to play a specific sport. With private schools and some public schools, all that is required is transportation, while in most public schools it requires actually living in the zoned area.

These are inequities that are easy to address by governing bodies.

This is the same as private schools NOT having to comply with the same accountability mandates that our public schools do預long with private schools being allowed to be selective. THEN we want tom compare public and private schools! (The interesting thing about this is that it is only Urban Legend that private schools outperform public schools. When all factors are held constant, there is no difference. . .I can share the research if anyone cares.)

Emerald used to be the big voice against BE, but Woodruff is the one that is affected the most now. Straight to AAAA sounds fair to me, but what do I know? Jack - Ron - Morris - CJ - Hurst don't answer that.
Posted By: It is, what It is! Re: 2009 Regions - 04/05/08 12:40 PM
Recruting and kids switching schools to get a leg up on their sports career, is an age old problem

example 1. Michael Jordon, left AAA power Pender Co. High school, to go to Laney a AAAA power in Wilmington N.C., the only reason he left was to get a better shot at being recurited, Poor Pender Co. had to play Laney in B-Ball, that sucks...

Former BSHS QBack left and went to Gaffney to be a starting QB, dude, like they need the help. And yes BSHS had to play him.

Valdosta GA, parents of good football players would get better jobs offered them to move into the Valdosta area, so they could pull in more good players, coaches in South GA, get 80,000 to 100,000 a year, so where the good players goes matters.

I myself had an offer to go to private high school(many, many, many years ago) for free if, I would play football. Boy they were reaching for any help they could get...

I love what you and your program does, I applaud the kids that dedicate their time to play all year and become the best they can be, I see your kids play AAAA schools toe to toe with no fear or trepidation. (sic maybe)

However, the size and location of your school, will dicate that your kids play up hill from now on... I hate it and, agree the private schools, and large University like schools get players, just because, and just because the school reaches out for them.

Not at all, CHT...also, if you started a private school even 10-20 miles or so away, and kids who lived in my attendance zone went to play for you instead and we had to compete against players the League would normally define as "our" athletes, I'd think that was just as unfair, if not even more. But that is what happens out there. Yes, the "Why would anyone think this is an unequal advantage" was sarcastic (thanks, CC for pointing that out). I'm not sure how the League considers defining an attendance zone as an entire county and competing against schools with an attendance zone of a small town is maintaining equality among competitors. Looking at the results over many years, I think it's fairly obvious that it is not.

You're right; it only makes you better if you can maintain a positive attitude about improvement. If a team takes a "we're never going to beat them anyway, so what's the point" attitude, then it can actually hurt more than it helps. However, if they can view a match against a strong team as a lesson instead of just as a competition, it can do wonders.

Playing against teams like Wando, Summerville, James Island and West Ashley gives a developing team some very practical, hands-on experience in how the game "should" be played; they can see what works and doesn't work firsthand and at game speed, much better than a coach could demonstrate using only simulated situations at practice. If you really want to learn how to shut down an attack by a blazing-fast breakaway forward, then you have to actually spend some time playing against a blazing-fast breakaway forward, for example. An 80-minute game could be a disaster, but an 80 minute practice can give a wealth of experience if you don't waste it worrying TOO much about what's on the scoreboard. With some of my newer players, I could actually tell a difference in the way they played between the first and second half against JI. We didn't find a way to win (yet), but those two goals did more to generate self-confidence and increase level of play than running up a score on a weaker team ever could.

Disadvantage due to the club situation? Sure. That's not something that will go away anytime in the near future, not something we are in a position to change, so I don't spend much time stressing over it. The way we step up to people who DO have that advantage, and how well we learn to compensate for it--that's worth working on, and it's something the girls can take pride in.
