Just a reminder for coaches that are beginning to schedule for 2009 Spring that the SCHSL has expanded the number of games to be played by Junior Varsity teams from 12 to 14.
You would think this is a good thing, but getting JV non-region matches is not easy and now I need to schedule 6 instead of 4.
Anybody interested in playing TLH?
Last year we were in an 8-team region and couldn't even play everyone in our region twice. Two of the games had to be predetermined as scrimmages.
We had zero non-region games and zero non-region scrimmages. Not good.
I like the change to 14 games.
It's good to have the option. Last year both our JVs maxed out on games and had to turn away 3 games.
Maybe a saturday doubleheader neutral site deal could be worked out. I've seen mine a few times play a pickup game after the regular 60 minute match. I know they have the energy for it.
Problem with that is, the League restricts us to one game per day unless it's an invitational tournament--which is separate from the 14 regular-season games.
In club it's not at all unusual to play two 90-minute matches on a Saturday with a couple of hours rest in between, but the HSL rules don't allow for it.
True, I guess I was thinking "what if this all changed?", due to cost cutting (gas, lights, field use that sorta stuff).
Like the 12 to 14 match jump, when and how was this decided? Just wondering what else was discussed at that meeting, ie: length of JV match?
I like the bump from 12 to 14 games for JV. I also wish that they'd make JV games 35-40 minute halves and move Varsity games to 90 minutes. My $.02.
Coach, you guys play 45 minute halves? I've only seen 40 minutes for varsity and 30 for JV. Is there some rule that lets schools pick length of play?
No, the 45-minute halves are club matches, not high school...the 40-minute halves for varsity and 30 for JV are set by the League and can only be shortened by the judgement of the head official, not lengthened.
Middle Schools are still limited to only 12 games with 2 tournaments and 1 scrimmage.
