Why is Cesa 94 Premier competing in the U-18 regionals with Cesa 93 Premier? Don't have a problem with it I am just curious

Maybe there should be separate threads for the Region 3 Championships and Region 3 Presidents Cup.

It seems to me the wildcard spot for the U18s should have gone to SCUMP 93s and not CESA 94.

Nah, it's "Regionals" so let's keep the conversation in one thread. Thanks!

How are wild card teams picked? I see that South Carolina United U17 girls are in regionals at the U18 age group, why did that slot not go to the SCUMP U18 girls?

SCUMP 93 Girls turned down the wild card.
Posted By: Mary Re: Regionals - 06/12/12 02:56 PM
SCUMP 93 Girls families were sent an email by their coach on June 4th telling them that they were awarded the U19 wild card, and asked players that would be interested in playing to let him know by that night. We had heard right after the State Championships in December that we might be eligible, but never a word between then. So yes... it was turned down because there were not enough players at the last minute to spend a possible 8 days up in Greenville. If we had known sooner, then players (graduated Seniors) may have put this in their plans, but being let know basically 2 weeks ahead most already had commitments....North/South All-Star game, beach, College orientations, Summer jobs.... I am not sure who dropped the ball on that, but I am glad that some South Carolina team was able to pick up the spot, and hope they are able to do well with the opportunity.

Why was there no word passed along since December? Who decides the wild card and when? How long did the SCUMP Board know they were the wild card? Why only give a team two weeks notice? Wreaks of being unorganized!

Were some states still playing their State Cup with winners undecided until the first weekend in June? I am pretty sure that's when GA played their SC finals. They can't set the brackets, and often can't determine wild cards until all of the State Cup winners are decided. The wild cards can be complicated since the winners of R3PL E, W, and C qualify for Regions. However, if that same team is the winner of their SC, the wild card to the next place in R3PL, and so on until they get to a team not already qualified and a team that accepts the wild card invitation.

It can complicated with certain things falling into alignment just right for a team to qualify as a wild card. Then there's the matter of accepting the invitation at a late date.

South Carolina United Battery wins Southeast Pre-Academy League Playoffs

Southeast Pre-Academy League Playoff Schedules/Results | Southeast Pre-Academy League Website | Playoff HQ

CHARLESTON, S.C. (May 30, 2012) – The Southeast Pre-Academy League Playoffs came to a close this weekend, as South Carolina United Battery claimed the U-14 championship with a victory over Charlotte Soccer Academy. The event, which also included a Player Development Program (PDP), took place May 26-28 at the WRAL Soccer Center in Raleigh, N.C.

South Carolina United Battery won all three of its games to advance through the playoffs. The team claimed a 1-0 victory over CASL in its opening game and defeated Kendall SC 3-2 in the semifinals before shutting out Charlotte Soccer Academy 4-0 in the championship contest.

“This was a very strong league, and each game during the season was very competitive," said South Carolina United Battery coach Matt Parmer. "We knew in order to advance we needed to play our best soccer of the year at the playoffs. Our club is very excited about what this group of players was able to achieve this year.”

With the win, South Carolina United Battery advances to the inaugural National Premier Leagues Champions Cup, where NPL national championships will be awarded. That event will be held July 27-31 at Waukegan Sports Park in Waukegan, Ill.

“Our players displayed the commitment, focus and quality during the year to earn the opportunity to represent our league in the NPL Champions Cup,” said Parmer. “The boys are very excited about the upcoming NPL Champions Cup. The boys love to play together and the opportunity to extend our season into July is a real treat for them. We are excited about what the future holds.”

On Saturday, 30 of the top players born in 1999 from around the league gathered for training as the league hosted a PDP. The players participated in technical training and high-quality 8v8 games. The coaching staff for the PDP included Brad Wylde, Executive Director of Charlotte Soccer Academy; Michael Milazzo, Director of Coaching for CASL; and Dario Brose, former Olympian and professional soccer player.

Next season the Southeast Pre-Academy League will expand with the addition of Orlando City Youth SC. An expanded schedule will provide 20 regular season games, three post-season games for the top eight teams, and 10 additional potential games through various showcases.

The NPL has been created to provide a unified, league-based national developmental platform with the highest level of competition in given geographic areas, and to elevate and change the competitive youth soccer landscape based upon fundamental principles outlined in US Club Soccer's 10-year vision.

Greenville, S.C. (June 14, 2011) – Teams, parents, referees, tournament officials and volunteers gathered at the Fluor Field Thursday to kickoff the 2012 US Youth Soccer Region III (South) Championships presented by the National Guard. Preliminary games begin Friday at 8:15 a.m. at MeSA Soccer Complex in Greenville, S.C. Teams proudly paraded onto the outfield at Fluor Field carrying state flags before being addressed by Liz Seman of the county council and Paul Caligiuri, former member of the U.S. Men’s National Team and member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

“The excitement level at the opening ceremonies really reflects the prestige of this event,” said Pearse Tormey, co-executive director of Carolina Elite Soccer Academy and chair of the local organizing committee. “The best players from all around the southern states have congregated in Greenville and we are honored to host such a high class event.”

Caligiuri acknowledged that the bulk of his playing career happened before most of the players he addressed were born, but related the successes of his teams to the current soccer landscape.

“Today, you have teams qualifying for world cup competitions and Olympics. A couple generations before you, we broke through by scoring an incredible goal that launched us to the World Cup in 1990,” Caligiuri said. “The bottom line is when you take the field, do you want to win. It’s about leaderships and what you do as players to help your team succeed. When you come to an event like this you represent more than just yourself, your family and your city. You are representing your state.”

Returning to regional competition this year are five past US Youth Soccer Region III Champions: Sting 97 (NTX), Sting 95 (NTX), NASA Elite (GA), Florida Rush Nike (FL) and Alpharetta Ambush Elite Red (GA).

Region III Championships kick off with a bang

GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 15, 2012) – More than 200 teams, including defending regional champions, Sting 97 (TX-N), NASA 14 Elite (GA), Florida Rush Nike (FL) and Alpharetta Ambush Elite Red (GA), kicked off the 2012 US Youth Soccer Region III (South) Championships presented by the National Guard today at MeSA and Wenwood Soccer Complexes in Greenville, S.C. The National Guard's partnership with US Youth Soccer is focused on enriching the soccer experience by positively influencing players and coaches in areas of leadership and character development while adding a strong presence of American pride.

Teams from all over the southern United States took to the field with pride representing their home states as the race for a national championship began in earnest. Only one 2011 regional champ, Florida Rush Nike U-18 Boys, started its title defense with a win on day one. Both Sting 97 (TX-N) and NASA 14 Elite (GA) started the week off with a 1-1 draw, while two-time defending regional champ Alpharetta Ambush Elite Red (GA) fell in defeat.

Some highlights from today’s games:

U-17 Girls

AHFC 95G (TX-S) v FC Alliance 95 Black (TN)
FC Alliance 95 Black (TN) took an early lead over AHFC 95 (TX-S) with a goal in the 19th minute by Merritt Monger. That lead held until AHFC’s Haley Silverberg leveled the score in the 53rd. Just two minutes later, FC Alliance regained the lead on a Laura Stewart strike. Late heroics bought AHFC level again as Madeline Nichols scored just before the final whistle for a 2-2 tie.

SSA Central 95 Elite (GA) v NWA Lightning Strikers (AR)
SSA Central 95 Elite (GA) was full of goals on day one of the Region III Championships as they faced NWA Lightning Strikers (AR). Nicole Polk scored in the 5th and 87th minutes to bookend the scoring, with Baley Jackson, Maggie Gaughan and Rachel VanHorn also finding the net for SSA. Taylor Estrada scored the lone Arkansas goal on the day.

94 NC Fusion Elite (NC) v 95 Lady Lobos (TN)
Four different players found the net for 94 NC Fusion Elite (NC) to lift the team to a 4-0 victory over the 95 Lady Lobos (TN). Victoria Andreski started the scoring in the 16th minute with Anna Naples and Claudia Ausley also adding first-half goals. Carolina Sherwood tallied a goal in the 83rd minute to end the game at 4-0.

CFK 95 Black (FL) v 95 Louisiana Fire Red (LA)
In its first trip to regionals, CFK 95 Black (FL) earned a 1-0 victory over Louisiana Fire Red (LA). Paxton Sickler broke the nil-nil scoreline with a strike in the 66th minute. CFK’s defense, anchored by keeper Meredith Gurnee, kept a clean sheet to ensure victory.

U-18 Boys

SCU/MP 93 Boys Elite (SC) v TSCH 94 Earle (OK)
Tulsa commit Christian Mata struck twice to lead TSC Hurricane to a 3-0 victory over SCU/MP 93 Elite (SC). To finish out the scoring tally, Anesuishe Raranje continued his scoring ways at the Region III Championships. After leading his team in goals in the 2011 edition of the tournament, Raranje started his 2012 scoring with a strike in the 53rd

BRSC 94 Black (LA) v SSA Central Elite 94 (GA)
BRSC 94 Black (LA) got an early goal from Rusty Guilbeau just 10 minutes into its game against SSA Central Elite 94 (GA). Caleb Mcreynolds added an insurance goal in the 51st for BRSC. That goal proved meaningful as Coleman Parks found the net in the 79th for SSA. That was as close as SSA would get as the game ended 2-1 in favor of BRSC.

Florida Rush Nike (FL) v Vestavia Steamers 94 (AL)
Florida Rush Nike(FL) started its regional title defense off with a 1-0 win over Vestavia Steamers (AL). Felipe Oliveira scored the lone goal in the 7th minute off a combination play with fellow striker Jean Rivaroli. Oliveira’s strike held as the game winner for a 1-0 victory.

93 CUFC Charolotte United Gold (NC) v West Pines United FC Black 93/94 (FL)
West Pines United FC Black (FL) took an early lead over 93 CUFC Charlotte United Gold (NC) with a goal in the 7th minute. GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 16, 2012) –
On day two of the championships, passion was on display as teams jockeyed for pool position in preparation for the last day of preliminary games. After more than 200 games in two days, several teams have secured slots in the quarterfinals while many others have everything to play for on day three of the tournament. Sunday games begin at 8:15 a.m. ET and continue throughout the day with the final matches beginning at 6:30 p.m.

In U-17 Boys pool play, West Pines United (FL) bounced back from a day one loss with a convincing win over HFC Blue (AL). Andres Payne started the scoring late in the first half as he slotted home a rebound. A Sergio Quintero double in the last 15 minutes of play and a Nicolas Souberville goal just before time ensured a 4-0 victory for West Pines.

Jacksonville United FC (FL) continued its winning ways this week with a 3-1 win over Eclipse 93 (S-TX). After finding the net seven times on day one, Eclipse was held to just one goal by Jacksonville United. Three different players lifted the Florida team, with Suneel Mudaliar, Adam Demetree and Christopher Azar all finding the net.

Georgia state champ and National League team Concorde Fire Elite notched its second win in as many days with a gritty 2-0 victory over BRSC/CSC Alliance (LA). Cameron Bean struck first in the 36th minute and Max Poore added an insurance goal in the 79th. Concorde Fire Elite has secured a spot in the quarterfinal round.

Looking to be the first Arkansas team to advance beyond the quarterfinals in regionals, Aztecas 95 (AR) earned a hard-fought draw versus 49 CFSC Breakers White (NC). On day one, Aztecas showed grit to come back and win from a 1-0 deficit. That same grit was on display as Aztecas and CFSC battled end-to-end on day two on the way to a 0-0 score line.

In the U-15 Girls bracket, after failing to score on the opening day, Challenge 97 (TX-S) found the net in just the second minute against NASA 15 Elite (GA) off the boot of Keely Abt. NASA would fight back and a goal by Kristian Leone brought the teams level in the 51st. Less than 10 minutes later, Challenge 97’s Jaylen Hinckley scored what proved to be the game winner to secure a 2-1 win.

In the pool’s other game, Palm Beach Soccer Academy - Magic Jacks (FL) and SSA/WGFC United 97 Elite (GA) battled back and forth to a 2-2 draw. SSA struck first with a Donye Monroe goal in the 15th. Jacqueline Byers equalized for Palm Beach in the 32nd, before Dallas Weaver put SSA back in front just five minutes later. Sabrina Chung leveled the game yet again just two minutes in to the second half to keep Palm Beach atop the standings in pool A.

97 FC Alliance (TN) secured a place in the quarterfinal with a win over Canadian Valley FC 97 (OK). Two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half, one by Bailey Williams and one by Delaney Griffin, set the Tennessee team up for victory. Canadian Valley pulled one back in the 63rd, but it wasn’t enough as FC Alliance claimed a 2-1 win.

Red hot 97 Louisiana Fire (LA) cruised to victory over Auburn Thunder (AL) on day two. Leading scorer in the group Alexandra Thomas scored her second hat trick in two days to lift Louisiana. A Kassandra Gonzalez goal and Cadie Higginson double rounded out the scoring. Louisiana Fire and FC Alliance will play for seeding purposes on the final day of preliminary games as they will both move on to the knockout rounds of the tournament.

Seeking out future roster spots, numerous college coaches have registered for the Region III Championships. Year after year the coaches enjoy the level of performance and urgency that comes when the teams play for advancement in the National Championship Series.

Regional winners of the Under-14 through Under-19 brackets earn a berth to the 2012 US Youth Soccer National Championships in Rock Hill, S.C., July 25-29 at Manchester Meadows.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 17, 2012) –
U-18 Girls 95 Concorde Fire Elite (GA) and OFC (OK) both had a slot secured in the quarterfinal round when they met Sunday. Myra Fisher gave Concorde an early lead as she found the net in the 2nd minute. In response, OFC would rattle off four straight goals, including a Heidi Greeson double. Georgia pulled a goal back in the 74th, but OFC went on to win 4-2.

NASA 12 Elite (GA) continued its regional title defense Sunday, needing a result against hometown rival United FA 94 Elite (GA) to control its own path into the quarterfinals. Brooke Theobald stepped up for her team, firing a goal in just the 4th minute for NASA. Needing to stay sharp at both ends of the field, NASA held on for the 1-0 and top spot in the pool.

Winless on the week thus far, BRSC 95 Black (LA) and SCUFC 94 Elite) (SC) played for pride on their final day of regional competition. BRSC’s Annabell Simpson got her team on the board just after the opening whistle. Nicole Newton would double BRSC’s lead before Anna Westbrook pulled one back for South Carolina. Kassidy Zeringue netted an insurance goal for Louisiana and the game ended 3-1.

After a heartbreaking defeat in the 2011 regional final, Brentwood 94 Premier (TN) entered day three needing a result against Legends (AL) and some help from the other game in the pool to advance to the knock out rounds of the 2012 tournament. Brentwood certainly did its part, notching a convincing 5-0 victory, led by a Chesney White double. The result launched Brentwood to the top of its pool and to a spot in the quarterfinals.

In U-16 boys pool play, 95 NCA Alliance (NC) came through with a critical win over 2011 regional finalist GSA 96 Phoenix Red (GA) to secure top spot in the pool as both teams move on to knock out stages. Brandon Millington scored the decisive goal for NCA in the 54th minute.

Concorde Fire Elite (GA) secured a spot in the quarterfinals by keeping a clean sheet against Arkansas Comets (AR). Defense reigned supreme on the day as neither team was able to create threatening scoring chances. The draw marks the end of the road at the region championships for the Comets.

Needing a result to advance,Brentwood 95 Premier (TN)couldn’t capitalize in front of goal and had to settle for a 0-0 draw with OFC 96 (OK). This draw marked the third in as many games for Brentwood, and the second on the week for OFC.

After grinding out wins in the first two preliminary games, Jacksonville United FC exploded for six goals and an emphatic victory over Vestavia Steamers (AL). After two Jacksonville goals in the first 20 minutes, Joshua Castellanos scored another just before half. Jacksonville faces a touch quarterfinal matchup with GSA.

Regional winners of the Under-14 through Under-19 brackets earn a berth to the 2012 US Youth Soccer National Championships in Rock Hill, S.C., July 25-29 at Manchester Meadows.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 18, 2012) – Quarterfinals matches brought plenty of emotion and drama to the Region III (South) Championships presented by National Guard. Under-14 through Under-16 age groups played quarterfinal matchups Monday and winners will enjoy a day off tomorrow as they prepare for semifinals on Wednesday. Two games were decided in overtime, with 3 going to PKs to decide a winner.

Quarterfinal matches continue Tuesday, with U-17 and U-18 teams taking the field. Additionally, U-13 and U-19 age groups will play semifinal matches on Tuesday.

With a spot in the semifinals on the line, it was a good day to have won your preliminary pool. All four U-16 girls winning teams Monday had advanced at the top of their respective group. First up, OFC 96 (OK) tallied a 1-0 victory over West Florida Premier 95 Elite (FL). Baillie Miller netted the decisive goal in the 68th minute.

Two Texas teams met up when Texans Red North (TX-N) and US Youth Soccer National League team AHFC 96 (TX-S) played on Monday. AHFC standout and youth national team player Michaela Abam played the hero as she struck in the 72nd minute to lift her team to a 1-0 win.

FC Alliance 96 Black (TN and 95 NCSF Elite (NC) battled back and forth Monday with a berth in the semis up for grabs. NCSF struck first thanks to an Anne Prendergast strike in the 30th. Jaoanda Parchman would level for FC Alliance just before half. Jessie Pardue put NCSF back up with the game winner in the 68th minute.

Hometown team CESA 95 Premier (SC) battled TNFC 96 Impact (TN) to a scoreless first half. Savannah McCaskill broke the stalemate in the 61st minute and Kathryn Jones added an insurance goal just 10 minutes later for the 2-0 victory.

SAA Real Madrid (FL) took a 1-0 lead over Brentwood 97 (TN) off a Sebastian Herran strike in the 36th minute. Brentwood would level just before halftime, but the equalizer was trumped just on the other side of the halftime whistle as SAA combined for a goal in the 46th minute. Allessandro Campoy added a third in the 66th to claim a 3-1 win.

GSA Phoenix 97 (GA) earned a spot in the semifinals with a 2-0 win over 96 CASL (NC). Goals by Kofi Twumasi and Josef Samuel in the 13th and 64th minutes respectively lifted the Georgia state cup champs.

Emotions ran high as Lightning Strikers (AR) and OFC 97 (OK) took the field in a quarterfinal match. Jacob Tunney scored the lone goal in the game as he found net in the 66th minute in a game that saw numerous cautions and one ejection.

South Texas state champs Lonestars 97 SAN (TX-S) scored an early goal against unbeaten West Pines United (FL) as Tristan Cavazos beat the high defensive line and slotted home the ball. A cohesive team effort and determined defending kept West Pines off the score sheet and secured the 1-0 victory.

Questions for those in the know-

1) Why does CESA have in U18 Boys both CESA 94 and 93 competing?

Wouldn't they be better served to fill 2 age group brackets?
CESA always stresses to the parents and players the importance of playing in your proper age group. Are they not contridicting themselves by doing this?

2) How can CESA 92 Girls advance? They are 0-3, shutout in every game?
Posted By: lvrpul Re: Region III Championships - 06/18/12 11:47 PM
Answer to #1 - A wild card team was needed to fill the 18 bracket and as the host club, by rule CESA was allowed to fill the spot
Posted By: lvrpul Re: Region III Championships - 06/18/12 11:52 PM
Answer to #2 - The 92g didnt advance

This seems like a stupid move by CESA.

Why reduce your chances for a CESA team to move on.
Posted By: Big Daddy Re: Region III Championships - 06/19/12 01:55 PM
How does adding a second team to an age group reduce your chances to advance?

Must be new math?

Try this math out Dad-

The 94's must be a pretty good team to have the confidence to compete as a younger team, thus they probably would have had a good chance to win their age group.

Really a mute point as both 93 & 94 are out.
Posted By: DeltaDog Re: Region III Championships - 06/19/12 02:56 PM
Maybe the u18 state wild card opportunity was the only ticket available to be in the event and they took it.
Posted By: Big Daddy Re: Region III Championships - 06/19/12 03:01 PM
The CESA 94's didn't compete at u17 because they lost in State Cup. So they didn't qualify for regions at age.

When the wild card opportunity came up at u18....that was their ticket to regions.

Good for them. As successful as they've been over the years and at a very critical age for college recruiting, they caught a deserved break.

I had the opportunity to watch the U18 girls match this morning versus Oklahoma and was very impressed with CESA goalkeeper Maggie Griesell of Greenville HS! She made several standout saves. Also impressive were Stephanie DeVita of Hillcrest and Emily Graves of South Aiken.

Always impressed with the job that Andrew Hyslop does with his teams. I look forward to watching the nucleus of this side in the Clash of the Carolinas July 7 at Blackbaud Stadium!

Congratulations girls on a great season and representing South Carolina with class!

GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 19, 2012) – On Tuesday at the US Youth Soccer Region III Championships presented by National Guard, after enjoying a day of rest yesterday, the Under-17 and Under-18 age groups were back in action to round out the semifinal field. Another set of teams have inched closer raising a regional trophy and vying for the coveted US Youth Soccer National Championship.

In U-18 boys’ quarterfinal play, defending Region III Champs Florida Rush (FL) needed overtime beat SSA Central Elite 94 (GA) to advance to the semifinals. Florida Rush took the lead just before half, but SSA’s Coleman Parks leveled the game at one in the 78th. Andrew Bruce scored the game winner in the second overtime period for Rush.

A sound tactical game lifted AYSES Gold (TX-N) to a 1-0 victory over BRSC 94 Black (LA). For the first time all week, AYSES kept a shutout, led by a strong defensive effort. Ramon Gallegos scored the game winner in the 28th.

After 72 minutes of scoreless soccer between 93 CUFC Charlotte United Gold (NC) and Dallas Texans Red (TX-N), Jacob Kennedy played the hero as he struck for CUFC in the 72nd minute. His goal proved the difference on the day as CUFC advanced to the semis on the 1-0 score line.

It’s been an impressive individual year for Cristian Mata of TSCH 94 Earle (OK) who was recently named Gatorade player of the year, and today his performance was equal to the accolades. After a scoreless first half with FC Alliance 94 Black (TN), Mata struck twice in the second frame to lift TSCH to a 2-0 victory.

In the U-17 girls group, CESA 94 Premier (SC) triumphed over AHFC 95 (TX-S), 2-0. Meaghan Carrigan began the scoring with a goal in the 30th minute, and Chelsea Drennan added an insurance goal in the 71st. This team now joins the U-16 CESA girl’s team representing the club in the semifinals.

Sting 95 (TX-N) inched out a win over CFK 95 Black (FL) by a score of 1-0. After heading into halftime locked at zeroes, Vanessa Mendoza scored the game winner in the 47th minute. Prior to today’s quarterfinal match, CFK had given up only one goal all tournament. One was enough for Sting who now move on to the semis.

Brandon FC Flames (FL) were first on the scoreboard when they took on 94 CASL Elite (NC). Caroline Evers scored twice for Brandon FC, once in the 40th and again in the 58th minute. CASL would get one back in the 70th on a Melanie Priestley goal, but Florida held on for the 201 victory.

94 NC Fusion Elite (NC) continued its shutout streak on the week as they battled 95 Louisiana Fire Red (LA) to a nil-nil draw through regulation and overtime. With confidence, Kelsi Peters stepped up and was the fifth of five shooters to net the spot kick and launched her team to the semifinals.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 19, 2012) – <The first four champions, Under-13 and Under-19 Boys and Girls, were crowned Wednesday at the US Youth Soccer Region III (South) Championships presented by the National Guard. Celebrations and emotions were on display as U-13 Girls Dallas Texans (TX-N), U-13 Boys NASA 17 Elite (GA), U-19 Girls CCSC Sol (FL) and U-19 Boys GSA 93 Phoenix Red (GA) claimed their respective titles. The Under-19 champions will continue their journey and compete at the prestigious US Youth Soccer National Championships July 25-29 at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C. The rest of the age groups will play final matches Thursday at MeSA Soccer Complex in Greenville, S.C.

Highlighting the oldest age group on the day, Brentwood 93 Premier (TN) fell to CCSC SOL (FL) 2-0 in the U-19 Girls final. A brilliant Emily Cooksey strike gave CCSC the lead just before half, and Allison Brashear added an insurance goal in the 63rd. Many of the girls on this CCSC team were formerly of Ponte Vedra and competed in the National Championships, but have never won that coveted title.

Longtime rivals CESA 92 (SC) and GSA 93 Phoenix Red (GA) battled in the U-19 Boys final for the chance to compete for the James P McGuire cup at the national championships. After a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation, Josimar Olmos and Donimic Bonilla found the net for GSA claim the regional title for the first time for this squad.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 20, 2012) – <The Under-14 through Under-18 age finals are set with 20 teams playing their way into the final matches for the US Youth Soccer Region III Championships. Florida Rush Nike (FL) is the lone defending US Youth Soccer Region III Champion team who has the opportunity to win back-to-back titles Thursday. They will face a rematch of last year’s final game as they face off with TSCH 94 Earle (OK) on Thursday.

Highlights from today’s games:

In the U-14 Girls group, semifinal day marked the end of the journey at regionals for Ponte Vedra Storm (FL), as they lost to TNFC 98 Azurri (TN). Callie McKinney and Karlie Paschall gave Tennessee a 2-0 halftime lead, and a double by Meredith Slessman secure their spot in the finals.

In a hard fought game, Liverpool 98 Elite (TX-N) eeked out a 1-0 win over Blitz United 98 Attack (OK). Rachel Palet scored the lone goal on the day in the 45th minute to send her team to the championship game.

In the U-15 Girls group, Louisiana Fire Blue (LA) took an early lead over US Youth Soccer National League team AHFC 97 (TX-S) with an Alexandra Thomas goal, her eighth of the tournament. That lead held until the waning minutes of regulation, as AHFC’s Christiana Sullivan leveled the score in the 77th. AHFC would strike in the overtime period with Junique Rodriguez netting her third goal on the week to claim the 2-1 victory and a spot in the finals.

Their finals day opponent will be Sting 97 (TX-N) who also advanced with a 2-1 victory over 97 FC Alliance Black (TN). Karina Boyea nodded home a corner to give Sting a 1-0 lead. Delaney Griffin equalized for FC Alliance in the 54th minute, her third goal in the tournament. Cassandra Conarty would answer for Sting just five minutes later and send her team to the title game.

In U-17 Boys action, Solar Chelsea (TX-N) had to bounce back from a 1-0 deficit against AHFC 95 (TX-S). After committing an own goal to fall behind, Solar leveled off a Casey Eaton goal in the 73rd minute. DeShawon Nembhard would prove the hero as he found the net in the 90th minute to send Solar to the finals.

Solar will face Jacksonville United (FL), who beat Steamers 95 Black (AL) in today’s semifinal. After failing to score through 90 minutes, Jacksonville broke the stalemate with two goals in overtime. Adam Demetree struck in the 105th and Riley Perrin doubled the lead just a minute later for a 2-0 victory.

Congratulations to these teams!
As for any critics who were saying the girls were having to play too many games in too many leagues, I imagine if you ask the players and their parents, they'd say it was all worth it to have the opportunity to compete at Regionals in their hometown/home state, win it, be able to call themselves Southern Regional Champions and move on to Nationals. Congratulations, again,to these players and their coaches and good luck at Nationals.

Pretty awesome that one of the smallest states in region III is sending three teams from the same club to the National Championships!

GREER — The Greenville-based Carolina Elite Soccer Academy (CESA) will be sending three teams to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships for the first time in the organization’s history.

Three CESA teams – Premier 95 U16 boys, Premier 95 U16 girls and Premier 94 U17 girls – played for Region III titles at the MeSA Complex Thursday morning, and all three were victorious.

The most dramatic win came courtesy of the U16 girls team, which remained locked in a scoreless tie through regulation and an extra period against the Oklahoma FC of Edmond, Okla., before keeper Casey Jeanfreau stopped a shot during penalty kicks to give her team a 1-0 win.

“We feel like this is our time, this is our year,” said Jeanfreau, a rising senior at Greenville Tech Charter.

The U16 girls team, coached by Andrew Fleming, went 6-0 in the Region tournament, outscoring its six opponents 14-1.

In the U16 boys final, Jackson Karolczyk scored off an assist from Eastside High’s Connor Donohue less than 10 minutes into the match and CESA’s Premier 95 boys team held on for a 1-0 win over GSA 96 Phoenix Red of Atlanta.

The team, coached by Pearse Tormey, was just 1-0-2 in preliminary play, but finished 4-0-2 by outscoring its final three opponents by a 7-1 margin.

There also was plenty of drama in the U17 girls final as CESA’s Premier 94 squad prevailed 2-1 over the Brandon FC Flames of Florida when Meaghan Carrigan scored the game-winning goal on a header with less than a minute remaining.

Carrigan, a rising senior at Christ Church Episcopal School, helped her team post a 5-0-1 record in tournament play. The team is coached by Andrew Hyslop.

All three CESA winners will advance to play for national titles at the U.S. Youth Soccer Championships, which are set for Rock Hill’s Manchester Meadows Complex, July 24-29.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 21, 2012) – The US Youth Soccer Region III (South) Championships presented by National Guard came to an inspiring conclusion Thursday with 10 teams lifting regional championship trophies and claiming a place at the 2012 US Youth Soccer National Championships in Rock Hill, S.C.

After a scoreless first half, TNFC 98 Azzurri (TN) won the U-14 Girls regional title with two second half goals to beat Liverpool 98 Elite (TX-N). Meredith Slessman struck in the 41st for her sixth of the tournament and Daniella Marcano added an insurance goal in the 61st to secure her team a berth in the national championships.

After a goalless first 70 minutes in the U-14 Boys final, FC Dallas 98 Premier (TX-N) and Sunrise Elite (FL) entered overtime knowing the first goal would be pivotal. Jack Skahan made sure momentum swung in favor of Sunrise Elite, as he ran onto a ball over the top and slotted home the decisive strike for a 1-0 victory.

Same name, different roster, same result. Sting 97 is once again Region III champs as they got the better of AHFC 97 (TX-S) in the U-15 Girls final. Vianei Sanchez finished a successful buildup from the Sting midfield to put her team in the lead. Sting defended well and goalkeeping played a huge part to ensure that one goal was enough to claim the championship.

The U-15 Boys final between GSA Phoenix 97 Red (GA) and SAA Real Madrid Miami (FL) was tied after regulation, tied after overtime, and decided by penalty kicks. Eight minutes into the first overtime period, Momodou Jallow gave GSA a 1-0 lead. Just five minutes from the regional championship, GSA then lost the lead as SAA’s Sebastian Herran scored from 35 yards out. In the shootout, SAA made all five shots and came up with the one needed save to advance to the national championships.

CESA (SC) went three for three in championship games today, with the first win by the U-16 girls over OFC 96 (OK). After both teams created but couldn’t convert scoring chances through regulation and overtime, the championship was decided by spot kicks. Going nine shooters deep, CESA netted the decisive penalty and won the title.

For the second year in a row, the U-16 Boys champion hails from CESA (SC). This year, CESA 95 claimed the regional title by beating GSA 96 Phoenix Red (GA). After GSA cleared a defensive corner, the ball came out to Glennon Donohue who served the ball back post and Jackson Karolcyk slotted it home. CESA may meet GSA again at the National Championships, as the Georgia team had previously qualified for the event via the US Youth Soccer National League.

The CESA U-17 Girls followed suit in similarly dramatic fashion. Brandon FC Flames (FL) took the lead as Caroline Evers slotted home a loose ball in the box in the 24th minute. Less than 10 minutes after halftime, CESA would level the game at one. Merely seconds from the final whistle and potential overtime, CESA’s Emily McCord sent a long ball to the back post where Meaghan Carrigan found enough space to nod the ball back across the keeper and into the net for the game and tournament winner.

Both teams in the U-17 Boys final advanced from the semis via late goals, and when Solar Chelsea 95 (TX-N) and Jacksonville United (FL) met on Thursday, the game was challenged until the final whistle. Kareem Itani gave Solar a lead just before halftime and Casey Eaton added another in the 62nd minute, his fourth on the week. Emir Hidic would bring Jacksonville back within one in the 83rd, but Solar held on for the win and the regional title.

For years Brentwood 94 Premier (TN) has come agonizingly close to a berth in the national championships. Last year they went home after making it to the final and worked all year to change the outcome this time around. Their U-18 finals day opponent, AHFC 94 (TX-S) made the road difficult, scoring immediately off the opening kickoff to claim a 1-0 lead. Brentwood’s Victoria Hawkins would equalize before half and Chesney White scored in the 65th on a quick counter attack to give Brentwood the lead. Just three minutes later, Jillian Lutz headed home a goal to bring the teams level again. Brentwood would not be denied and Lindsey Mayo made the most of her strike in overtime to finally claim the regional title.

The U-18 Boys final marked a rematch of the 2011 championship game as Florida Rush Nike (FL) faced TSCH 94 Earle (OK). For the first 45 minutes, both teams enjoyed periods of possession and quality chances without scoring a goal. In the 62nd minute, Florida’s Jean Rivaroli finished a cross off a half volley. Solid defending and goalkeeping kept a shutout for Rush and the team repeated as regional champs.
