Oceanside's Gonzalez hospitalized in intensive care

“Dear Landsharks,

One of our students, Sergio Gonzalez Camarillo is in ICU at MUSC Pediatric Hospital downtown. He was admitted last night and is currently on life support. Doctors are not certain what exactly happened but his heart failed him.

I believe in miracles and we are in need of one right now.”

Gonzalez is deeply entrenched in the local soccer scene, playing most recently with the Cainhoy Soccer Club. He tried football for the first time this season and set school records for touchbacks, extra points and field goals as Oceanside’s starting kicker.

“First and foremost, everyone loves Sergio,” Oceanside football coach Chad Grier said. “He has a contagious smile, a great, pleasant personality. Everything you could possibly want in a kid, a player, a teammate.

“From a football standpoint, he’s the most talented kicker I’ve ever coached. I’ve had soccer players come kick before but never had a player come to work every single day the way Sergio does. We tried him at linebacker, defensive lineman and, of course, kicker. It didn’t matter, he was always ready. He just wanted to be part of the team and for that reason he earned the respect of everyone around him.”

A GoFundMe page has been arranged to help Gonzalez’s family with medical expenses. It has raised more than $10,300 in 20 hours. Click here to visit Gonzalez's GoFundMe page.

It is with a very sad heart that we must share the news that one of our players and a wonderful young man passed away today.

We are deeply sorry and saddened by the passing of Sergio Gonzalez Camarillo (2002-2018).

Sergio was well loved by all that knew him and this young man just loved his soccer, most recently suiting up this past fall for Cainhoy Athletic 17U boys and Oceanside Collegiate Academy.

In honor of his memory, there will be a Memorial Service this Saturday (January 15th) at the Charleston Battery MUSC Stadium on Daniel Island at 10.00 am. Participants are encouraged to wear a white jersey in his honor with #19 (his favorite) and bring a soccer ball to kick in his honor.

Please take a moment to pray for this wonderful young man and for his grieving parents, Juan and Carmen, and the rest of his loving family.

Please know how much we loved having Sergio part of our soccer community (and lives), and how deeply the loss is felt by all.
