GM: Soccer has a larger fan base

General Motors Chief Marketing Officer Joel Ewanick said Thursday that soccer has a much larger global fan base than American football, underscoring why a five-year Chevrolet marketing deal with global soccer powerhouse Manchester United is a better way to promote cars than a Super Bowl ad.

The announcement of the deal with Manchester United comes two weeks after GM said it will not advertise in the Super Bowl next year and will stop paying for ads on Facebook.

Great stuff!
Maybe Government Motors can pay back the money they owe from the bailout if they sell some cars.
GM had a great, profitable year. They've mostly paid their government bailout back. They flew one of their corporate jets back to DC with ~$50 billion in large, unmarked ones (badum chee). I, for one, am happy to see a US company step up big to the real football market. Let's hope we see some sponsorship support for women's professional soccer and the LPGA too. We can do our part as well - tell people you are patronizing their products because of their sponsorship of the sport you want to see succeed. For American soccer, we don't have the fan base numbers, network deals or ratings of the major sports, but we can let every sponsor know that their investments are paying off in a demographic that like Avis, tries harder.
