I talked to former Ben Lippen keeper Wayne Sweeten last night who informed me that the Citadel is going to bring back their soccer program which was discontinued for title 9 reasons. He also said that Georgia is going to have a team in the fall either this year or the next as well.
UGA and the Citadel met the other day in a spring game and UGA won 1-0. Wayne is the starting keeper at the Citadel right now with his back up being former Pinewood Prep standout Wayne (i believe, but that may be his dad) Pavilacheck.
This is good news... As I saw a trend that was bothering me.
East Carolina and Vanderbilt both discontinued their mens program.
There is nothing official on The Citadel's website that i could find. Is there a press release somewhere that you could give us the link to?
UGA is going to have VARSITY MENS Soccer?
All I know is what Wayne told me, I searched on the website as well to no end. He said that for this fall season they will play a season of games, but will not be elligible for postseason play. i.e. Notre Dame on bowl suspension, no conference, plus no postseason. But in 2 years, they will have a new recruiting class, and will be NCAA once again. For this fall, they still hope to schedule games against regular d3-d1 opponents. He also said UGA would have a team, but that may just be a spring team, or a club team.
I was kinda sad when ECU cancelled their team. My cousin was the captain of the squad the year before it was discontinued, and his co-captain is now on the national team pool and plays center mid for DC United.
" When most people hear of a club soccer team at Georgia, their first question is why there is not a varsity soccer program. Because the Southeastern Athletic Conference (SEC) does not have scholarship men's soccer, our team is a student-run organization. The NCAA's Title IX rule declares that a university must offer the same amount of men's and women's scholarships for varsity sports. Thus, men's soccer programs throughout the SEC have been eliminated because of the lack of equivalent women's scholarship teams. Most of Georgia's male scholarships are taken up by football players. "
This is so true. It's sad really considering most football players can't make grades good enough to compete with my collie Buddy.
Yeah, especially those Ga. dawg football players.
here we go again, and I am going to ruffle some feathers (no pun intended)
Get rid of 15 football players and the roster get somewhere in the 60s and you still have enough to play plus your quality football players. I am sorry but I can and will never understand why it need to be so big. A simple small reduction in numbers and other sports can survive.
I be curious to see a list of the complete roster and how many of them have scholarships. Foe example Vandy has 90 players in their roster. Apparently once you are a LG there is no way you can ever play something else. Try telling a soccer coach that you only play left midfield in a 3-5-2 lineup and you are only left footed.
Look at Vandy, great facilities paid for by alumni....
Excuse me foosbol, your grammar may not be as good as shut^'s collie.
UHHH.... I am an UGA alumni???
I heard more about the situation at the Citadel. It looks like if they bring the program back to life, they won't be NCAA affiliated for 2 more years or so. And I should have more news tomorow or later

-4 cool points.. -2 for having a collie..and another 2 for naming it "Buddy"
mom's dog. she named it, looks like Lassie. I can guarantee you he gets more ladies than you.
Shut^,
If Buddy looks like Lassie, hes gotta get more ladies than Dudeman.
Here is a pic of Dudeman's dog. During his days at L-E, he took her to soccer games, but her cheers never helped the team.
..that's just disturbing.
(I've finally found something I regret in my life. Telling you how to post pictures in a forum.)
Thanks again, so much. I could not have done it without you.
glad to hear waynes soccer skills aren't going to waste. i might actually have to get down to chuck town and watch some games
Ok. My latest news is: The Citadel is playing spring games against other schools NCAA team, but for now they will remain a club team until they redeem their NCAA status. Not sure when that will be, but hopefully in the next couple of years.
