Furman Earns Second Seed, Hosts UNC Greensboro In Saturday SoCon Quarterfinal Match

Greenville, S.C. -- The Furman men’s soccer team will opens its quest to repeat as Southern Conference Tournament champions when the second-seeded Paladins play host to seventh-seeded UNC Greensboro in SoCon quarterfinal round action Saturday at Stone Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

The Paladins finished the regular season at 11-7-1 overall and 4-3-0 in the Southern Conference. Appalachian State and Georgia Southern both tied Furman for second place behind unbeaten Elon (7-0), but the Paladins earned the second seed by virtue of their victories over both schools
during the regular season.

UNC Greensboro dropped a 2-1 decision at Georgia Southern on Tuesday to conclude the regular season at 6-11-1 overall and 2-5-0 in the league. The Spartans finished in a three-way tie with Davidson and Wofford and were awarded the seventh seed.

Furman downed UNCG 3-2 in a double overtime thriller at Stone Stadium on October 4, to claim its third straight victory over the Spartans and extend its series lead over UNCG to 13-8-1. Furman and UNCG have combined to win 21 of the last 24 SoCon regular season titles and each of the last
three league tournament crowns, including the Paladins’ 1-0 victory over the Spartans in last season’s SoCon title match in Greensboro, N.C.

The winner of Saturday afternoon’s showdown will advance to the SoCon semifinals to face the winner of Sunday’s match between third-seeded Georgia Southern and sixth-seeded Davidson. The semifinal match will take place November 14, at 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium in Davidson, N.C. The championship match is set for 1 p.m. on November 16 at Alumni Stadium.
