Women's Soccer Signs 11 Student-Athletes to National Letters-of-Intent


CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer program has announced the signing of 11 student-athletes to a National Letter-of-Intent, head coach Rohan Naraine announced recently. Joining the Chanticleers in the fall of 2009 are Shelby Butz (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), Ashley Day (Elkton, Md./North East), Abby Fennessey (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head Island), Laura Hordis (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), Maggie McGavin (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), Ali Morin (Mason, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), Courtney Moser (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine), Danielle Schaefer (Bridgetown, Ohio/Oak Hills), Cami Skladany (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales), Morgan Thomas (Simpsonville, S.C./Southside Christian) and Katie Weigel (Matthews, N.C./Covenant Day School).

Butz, a goalkeeper, has earned two varsity letters at Wyoming Valley West High School in Plymouth, Pa., with the 2009 season upcoming in the spring. She was the co-captain her junior season as the Spartans advanced to the first round of districts. Butz also plays volleyball and set a school record with 241 assists her senior year. She also has played basketball and track and field during her time at Wyoming Valley West. Butz played club soccer with FC America and earned High Honors all four years of high school.

Day, a midfielder, was a team captain and a two-time All-County player at North East High School in North East, Md. She led the county with eight assists and was second with 18 points. She had nine goals and nine assists in 12 games her junior year and was a Cecil Spotlight Player. A four-year starter in the midfield, Day had a total of 31 goals and 21 assists. Day also played softball for the Indians, earning All-County honors her junior season. Day currently plays club soccer for the DE United Blue Monkeys and is an Honor Roll student at North East.

Fennessey, a forward, helped Hilton Head High School to a 3A state championship her junior season with the Seahawks. She was the High School Sports Report and Island Packet Player of the Year as well as an All-State selection. Fennessey helped Hilton Head Prep to SCISA state championships in 2006 and 2007 and is in the Olympic Development Program (ODP). She also played basketball at Hilton Head Prep, helping the squad to back-to-back SCISA championships. Fennessey is an Honor Roll student at Hilton Head.

Hordis, a midfielder/forward, is a four-year varsity letterwinner at Hatboro-Horsham High School in Horsham, Pa. She also played volleyball and ran track for the Hatters. Hordis plays for the DE United club team and also has played on the Horsham Travel Soccer and Kirkwood clubs. Hordis is a Distinguished Honor Roll student at Hatboro-Horsham.

McGavin, a defender/midfielder, helped West Springfield High School to back-to-back Patriot District championships in 2007 and 2008. She also plays basketball for the Spartans and was part of back-to-back Patriot District runner-up teams. McGavin is on the National Super Y team in 2009 and has played club soccer for the SVC Galaxy, the BRYC Blue Thunder and the Vista Fury. She was a captain of the Under-16 and Under-17 Super Y Nova Majestics and has been in the final four for the Virginia State Club Championships the last five seasons. McGavin is on the Junior National Honors Society at West Springfield. She went to the same high school as former Chanticleer Heather Haupt.

Morin, a defender/midfielder, helped the Ohio Elite club team to the US Club Regional Championship in 2007. She is an ODP State Pool player and was part of the two-time Midwest Regional League Champion club team. Morin also played on the Under-17 SYL Super-Y League National Championships squad in 2007. She played her freshman and sophomore years at St. Ursula Academy in Cincinnati, Ohio, helping the Bulldogs to a 2006 Greater Cincinnati League championship and a district runner-up finish. Morin is a four-year Honor Roll student and is from the same high school as former Chanticleer Lindsay Willis.

Moser, a forward/midfielder, is a three-year varsity letterwinner at Brandywine High School in Wilmington, Del., with an upcoming senior season in 2009. Moser has helped the Bulldogs to 44 wins the last three seasons and back-to-back appearances in the state tournament. Moser currently plays club soccer for the DE United Blue Monkeys and helped the team to a State Cup title in 2008 and a top-ranking in the state of Delaware. She also played club for the Concord Soccer Association from Under-8 to Under-17. Moser is an Honor Roll Student at Brandywine.

Schaefer, a defender, was a Second Team All-Greater Miami Conference selection her senior season at Oak Hills High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. She anchored a defense that set school records for fewest goals allowed in a season (9) and most shutouts in a year (12). She was the captain of the Highlanders her senior year and is the team’s two-time Defensive Player of the Year. She also plays basketball at Oak Hills and helped the team to a District championship her sophomore season. Schaefer plays club soccer for the Ohio Elite Soccer Academy, who was the Midwest Regional League First Division champions and Ohio South State quaterfinalist in 2007 and 2008. Schaefer has made the Honor Roll every quarter at Oak Hills.

Skladany, a midfielder, was a four-year letterwinner and starter at St. Francis DeSales High School in Columbus, Ohio. She was a First Team All-Central Catholic League and Second Team All-District selection her senior season with the Stallions. Skladany also was a Wendy’s High School Heisman candidate and an Athlete of the Week by WTVN-TV. She also was a First Team All-League selection her junior season and has earned three letters in basketball. She plays club soccer for Blast FC in Columbus and is an Honor Roll student at St. Francis DeSales.

Thomas, a forward/midfielder, is a three-time All-State and All-Region 2A selection at Southside Christian in Simpsonville, S.C. She led the Sabres in goals and assists all three years and was named an All-State selection by the High School Sports Report in 2006. Thomas also helped the Sabres to the state championship game in 2005 for the school’s first-ever appearance in the title game. Thomas most recently played club soccer for the CESA 90 Premier, who played in the RIII Championships in Raleigh, N.C., and was State champions in 2007. She was third in the RIII Premier League in scoring in 2004-05 and scored the game-winning goal in the championship game. Thomas also played ODP for the SC State Select “91 team in 2008 and started in the ODP Championships in Houston, Texas, in January. Thomas is a National Honor Society member at Southside Christian.

Weigel, a defender/midfielder, was an All-State, All-Region (Private) and All-Metrolina Athletic Conference member her junior year at Covenant Day School in Matthews, N.C. Weigel helped the Lions to three straight conference titles and Private 2A State championships in both 2006 and 2007. She also earned all-conference honors her sophomore year. Weigel played for the North Carolina ODP from 2003-05 and the Charlotte Soccer Club Region III in 2005 and 2008.

Coastal Carolina ended the 2008 season with a 13-7-1 record and a second straight Big South regular-season championship. The Chanticleers advanced to the finals of the Big South Tournament as well as setting a school record with a nine-game winning streak.

In reading the release it appears that CCU got 3 kids from the same club team in Delaware and 2 kids from the same team in Ohio. Don't know much about the players but it appears that their teams compete at a high level. I understand that Thomas from CESA is a very good player.
