According to WRCB-TV, Brainerd High School did not have a soccer team during the 2008-09 school year though Steven Hughley was paid more than $4,400, or 10 percent of his salary, as a stipend.
Hughley said he was unable to fill a schedule for the team, and had told school officials in March about the matter. He said he was willing to reimburse the school district.
Dr. Jim Scales, Hamilton County school superintendent, said the district may review its practice of paying coaches in advance.
