Due to SCHSL ruling a team ineligible (even though they have continually played in SCHSL Sanctioned tournaments. We are looking for one team that can play at the scheduled times:

Thursday March 25th- 7:30 vs. Academic Magnet
Friday March 26th-6:00 vs. Blue Ridge
Saturday: TBD

Tournament entry fee will be waived and schedule could possibly be accommodating if Thursday night is not a possibility. If interested, please email smasone@lex2.org

It's unreasonable to expect one team (Dreher) to play a game at 4:45 PM on Friday and then turn around and play again at 7:15 PM . Why not move the 7:15 PM game to the 8:30 PM time slot when Airport plays Blue Ridge. Neither of these teams is playing earlier that evening. This is poor planning and the host school should do something to correct this.

Bruin-It is not poor planning. This was a change that was made yesterday to accommodate Blue Ridge, who had a death of a student this week with a funeral planned for Friday. The change was made with consent from all teams involved in the switch, ie. Dreher, Aiken, NMB, Bluffton, AHS, and Blue Ridge. We are attempting to make a more reasonable window for a team traveling from the upstate whose plans have changed by a tragic event.

Let me publicly thank all the coaches that have graciously agreed to change their schedules to accommodate my team. As Coach Masone mentioned, Monday night Blue Ridge High School lost one of our students in a tragic car accident. The young man was a senior and probably that 1 kid at our school that everyone knew and liked, he transcended all groups. He was not a member of our soccer team, but he was on the football team which half my team played on, he was also a member of our chorus & band programs, which some of my players are as well, not to mention with 13 seniors on my team many have had classes with him. I also had the privilege of teaching this young man last year. As a teacher you cannot ask for a more ideal student.

Tuesday morning I immediately contacted Coach Masone and let him know that there was a possibility the arrangements for this young man were going to be Friday and wanted to know the chances of adjusting our start time to allow us to attend the services. Coach Masone immediately contacted the other coaches involved at the other 4 schools, and all agreed to move their start times up to allow my group to attend the funeral. This meant that a couple of the teams would have less recovery time between their first and second match, and the other two teams would have to leave earlier than planned. And getting students out early from school can be extremely difficult at times! From the beginning of the ASI, Coach Masone has stated he wants this to be a first class tournament. His actions taken to help make this possible for us demonstrate that!

As I stated in my email that I sent to these other coaches, I have never met any of them and couldn’t pick them out of a crowd, let alone line the 5 of them up and just try to get the right name with the right person. That speaks volumes for a coach to do that for a group of young men that he has no ties to, and probably doesn’t even know a single person on the roster. Sometimes in life there are more important things than the game of soccer. To know that there are coaches out there that possibly sacrifice their team (less rest or earlier leave) for another to attend a funeral for a classmate is one of the classiest things for him to do. Any of you players that are on one of these teams (Dreher, Aiken, NMB, Bluffton, and AHS), you need to be proud of the coach you have. Parents you need to know your son is in good hands. Their coach has exemplified sportsmanship to the highest level one could imagine at a time like this.

Again, thank you to the coaches that graciously altered their start times to accommodate my team. My boy’s thank you, my coaching staff thanks you, my parent’s thank you, and my school thanks you. I hope I have the opportunity to say thank you face to face this weekend. Best of luck to all involved in the ASI this weekend.
