Word is out that Columbia United will now be SC United going forward. What does this mean? Is Coastal United next?

Press Release
April 4, 2010
(Columbia, South Carolina)
Columbia United FC, South Carolina’s largest non-profit youth soccer club
with over 4,600 registered players, announced today its new trade name - South
Carolina United FC. Starting with the upcoming 2010-2011 season, the club’s well
recognized block and shield logos will have the exact same look and colors but the
word “Columbia” will be replaced with the words “South Carolina”. The new
trade name more accurately reflects its ever increasing membership growth and
the fact that its current advanced player base is comprised of youth soccer players
residing in 17 counties across the state and beyond. “We truly are now
comprised of a much larger youth soccer community and incorporating the state’s
name into the program makes perfect sense from an identity standpoint, a
marketing standpoint and a corporate sponsorship standpoint” says Colin Kent,
Community Soccer Officer of Columbia United FC.
Moving forward, the club will continue to offer the same quality programs
it has since inception, namely the Columbia United YMCA Strikers Soccer Program
for children with special needs, the Columbia United YMCA Recreational Youth
Soccer Program for children ages 3-18, the South Carolina United FC Player
Development Program (PDP) for recreational players ages 7-11 who desire
advanced skill training, the South Carolina Junior Academy Soccer Program for
advanced players ages 8-11 and the South Carolina United FC Select Soccer
Program for advanced players ages 12-18. Additionally, Columbia United FC will
now manage the administrative functions of the SCUFC Development Academy,
Inc., the non-profit entity which operates South Carolina’s only program in the
heralded United States Soccer Development Academy - for the state’s most
talented male soccer players ages 14-19 with U.S. National Team aspirations.

How will this help the lowcountry? Columbia United has succesfully taken the best part of Bridge (Academy) and now totally made it their own.

No matter how you cut and slice the pie, the pie is still the same size. SC united managed to remove the best part of bridge, clubs in the coast merging does not produce additional opportunities. The number and caliber is still the same.

Someone once said, you change the name increase the fee and yet the coach is the same guy, the players are the same, we go to the same tournaments and somehow we are supposed to believe that this is an improvement?

Is the new and improved statement normally found in store shelves, how do we know? you just have to believe us.

The Development Academy now has it's feeder system it has always needed, Columbia. I am sure some from upsate(CESA) will look at it, now the drive is a little shorter. So there will be less opportunity for Lowcountry kids. The rest will just fight over the scraps which are really the same old, same old(Summerville, James Island and Mount P). Most at Coastal United have left the other lowcountry clubs for various reasons. Will be interesting to see if they go back or something else morphs from this.

Really must give Columbia United full marks. They have adopted a vision and grown as a club while giving club members lots of opportunities. Well done.

Until there is new leadership in the Lowcountry it will be business as usual.

It just happens that the "same" pie has an extra topping on it and some cool whip too I have a strange feeling that many more people from Aiken, Lexington, Greenville, and other places will find this pie much more tasty than before
