HIROSHIMA, Japan -- The United States tied China 1-1 in Group D at the women's under-20 World Cup on Thursday, ensuring Germany became the first team to advance to the quarterfinals.

Shen Lili scored with a superbly struck drive from the top of the area in the 19th minute and Maya Hayes tied it for the Americans with her fourth goal of the tournament in the 36th. The U.S. has four points and must avoid defeat in its final group match against Germany.

Substitute Lina Magull scored an injury-time winner as defending champion Germany beat Ghana 1-0, while North Korea routed Argentina 9-0.

China, which has one point and still has a chance of advancing, plays Ghana in its last game of the group stage.

I watched some of that game and it was some ugly soccer. I don't know the coach of the US side but there has got to be someone better than that. You are supposed to have the best U20 women in the country and your team can't possess the ball for any length of time. A quality coach could have the team playing better soccer than that display
