U.S. national team has a tough road ahead

Quote:

On Wednesday morning, U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati had met with reporters to describe the enormity of the changes Klinsmann was trying to catalyze on three levels: transforming the U.S. system in the long term, qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in the medium term, and winning games in the present.

I was able to watch the second half yesterday and was appalled by the U.S. overall performance. The entire second half, they looked discombobulated and unorganized. Klinsmann struggled directing one of the top national teams in the world in Germany, how can we expect him to do better with less here in the U.S.

I personally liked Bob Bradley and his no-nonsense approach to managing the U.S. side. He was very professional and evidently prepared his teams far better than what I've seen of Klinsmann thus far.

Time will of course ultimately tell, but everything from the player selection, to the formation, to the substitution patterns seem to be in question for the current team.

We didn’t underestimate them. They were a lot better than we thought.

The reality is, it's one game out of 10, in a tough place to play, vs. an underrated team, on their national holiday. I would have taken a draw and SPRINTED out of that place.

That said, we didn't provide an inexperienced pairing like Cameron and Gonzalez with sufficient: 1) Direction from the GK; 2. Support and cover from the FBs; 3) Cover from the MF. Result: 2 goals against.

It will get better.

U.S. drops to No. 32; Mexico stays at 15th

ZURICH -- The United States dropped four spots to No. 32 in the latest FIFA rankings after losing a World Cup qualifier to 51st-ranked Honduras.

World Cup champion Spain leads the rankings and African champion Nigeria moved up 22 places to No. 30 after its victory over Burkina Faso in the African Cup of Nations final.

Spain leads an unchanged top three ahead of Germany and Argentina. Fourth-place England improved two places after beating 18th-ranked Brazil in an exhibition last week. Italy dropped to No.5.

The top ranked African country is No. 12 Ivory Coast, which lost to Nigeria in the quarterfinals.

Mexico leads CONCACAF nations at No. 15. Japan leads Asian nations at No. 28, down seven places.
