Really unfortunate for Daniel. Some states, such as Ohio, allow regular season games to end in a tie. If that were the case in South Carolina, Seneca would lead Region 1 AAA at 35 points with a record of 11-2-0, Walhalla would be second at 31 with a record of 10-1-2, and Daniel would be third at 30 points with a record of 9-3-1(that's wins-draws-losses). But Walhalla plays at Seneca on Monday while Daniel plays Emerald. With the way soccer is done in the rest of the world, if Daniel were to beat Emerald, Walhalla would have to beat Seneca to get the 2 seed for the tournament, but as it is the best Daniel can hope for is a tie for second place.
Of course, a tie for second would seem good, since Walhalla and Daniel played twice, Walhalla winning in spot kicks after a 2-2 tie, and Daniel winning 3-2. Looks like Daniel would be second on aggregate goals. But apparently each region gets to decide how to break such a tie in the standings, and the word is that in Region 1 Daniel and Walhalla will have to play a tie-breaker game to decide the 2 seed, a system that punishes both teams.
Oh, well. I guess that's high school soccer in South Carolina.
