How did Western AAA get three players on the girls and boys All-State Team? Outside of the Florence/Sumter areas this has to be the weakest area for soccer in South Carolina. Hopefully someone will recognize this in the future and that goes for all Classes. Also, how the Berea boys didn't get anyone on the AST is beyond me when South Pointe got someone.

I take exception to the Florence/Sumter areas comment but cannot argue the point. The fact is this is one of the weaker spots for soccer in our state. But, we're trying! Our club soccer scene is getting better and that should help the high schools in 8-10 years. Schools in our area have tried to get more exposure for our kids by playing in better tournaments and playing better non-league competition but it is going to take time.

I am not singling out players but for me All-State means the best 18 players in South Carolina regardless of their grade. How can some of these coaches "represent" their players as All-State yet finish 3rd or 4th in their own region? I count 11 players in the Semifinals and to me that is merited. For the teams that have players on teams eliminated in the 1st/2nd Round then were they really All-State? Maybe we need to have the All-State selections after the first week of the playoffs.

So you are asserting that it is impossible for a deserving player to play on team that loses in the 1st or 2nd round?

That is exactly what happens upstatesoccermom. Look at who sits on the selection committee, and then look at the players that were selected and the schools that they attend. In 2A boys there were two players that were selected that weren't represented by a coach on the committee. It was my understanding that this was an award based on individual merit not the accomplishments of the team that the player plays on. I would like to see the statistics of the players that were selected to see just how deserving they were.

I think it comes down to coaches having to decide if a player scores 30 goals against a poor schedule or if a player scores 15 against the state's best competition. It's a fine line no doubt!. That being said, I've seen the JL Mann girls play this year and they deserve five players on the All-State Team. I don't begrudge the others from getting 2-3 players. Those teams are elite with great players. What gripes me is a team that can get 1-2 players on the All-State Team but have a less than "great" season and exit the playoffs in the 1st or 2nd round. All-Region, sure! All-State, no way!

No, but the coach must look him/herself in the mirror and ask "what did I do wrong this year?" Maybe those players were worthy of that recognition a year ago, but not for this season. And from what has been told to us time and again is that it should just recognize that Spring season and not prior years or club accomplishments.

As GWS said, it is an individual recognition, not a team recognition. There are tons of very talented kids in this state that do not have the luxury of playing on a team loaded with talent.

Is the 5th best player on JL Mann girls better than the best player that was on a team eliminated in the 1st or 2nd round?

These type of awards, including the All Star games, are hard to pick because it impossible for the committee to compare a boy or girl from the different regions of the state.

It's not a team award but often turns into that.

The committee is often made up of a group of coaches from the best teams so their players tend to get selected.

A player, one of the top 2 or 3 players I coached against this year, wasn't selected as an All-State player but was selected as a Clash of the Carolina's All star. He's one of the 18 best senior players in the state but he's not one of the best 18 AAAA players in the state?
