I agree...I believe that most of the time, the offsides trap is used by teams who have weak, slow fullbacks. Point in case is Goose Creek. But, they pull it off well.

Better teams use it sometimes to catch opponents off-guard and to make them have to think about it a just a little from that point on - it usually makes the forwards back up a few steps.

I believe that Gentleman Dave said it best, it can be a very effective tool to use occasionally during a game to keep the opponents forwards thinking.

I would like to add two points. First, you have to have huge juevos to use the trap for an entire game. All it takes is one slow fullback to not push up with the rest of the defense and your keeper could be looking at two or three forwards advancing uncontested.

Second, as defensive as I am of officiating, this is one situation where you had better have the right AR in place. A slow or inattentive AR can completely ruin even an effective trap.

Good point(s) lfc...if a team plans to use the offsides trap a lot, and the AR does not call offsides correctly the first couple times, that team had better come up with another strategy, or they will be $crewed. A good AR is absolutely necessary for a team who uses the trap a bunch.
