Well. I am a referee, but I'm not a high school referee. I'm also an avid spectator, and a "coach" (statician really...).
I'm sorry about the way it works in the charleston area. But so far, I have no complaints for the playoffs in columbia. There are plenty of superior referees, and even throughout the season, they seem to consistently get the best matches, which are always 3 man crews. I think letting the league choose who refs what game would not be the best idea, as Dennis knows who does the best job from club and high school, and the HSL (i.e. last years state championships) does not. (I'm not complaining about the refs at the championships, simply stating that they weren't the most qualified.

The problem with getting quality HS refs that that most of the refs that do high level matches don't want to put up with the bs that comes with refing a HS match. I personally know many refs in various states that won't ref HS soccer because of what comes with it. I ref at all levels and don't let the pety stuff that comes from refing HS soccer in this state bother me, but I have many friends that won't do it for the low game fees and lack of respect.

"Sometimes think there needs to be stands emptied. Keep all the fans out and away and then see how bad is the reffing."

Empty stands, no gate earnings, no pay for the refs ...ya'll gonna do it for the "love of the game??" Ha...funniest statement I've seen yet.
I'm an old game official, and when I was trained you played the field or court you were assigned to, not the fans in the stands unless they entered what was considered "your area" ...the field or court.

I am a referee from the Charleston Area and I can tell you for a fact that the referees that you get for the High School Leagues are not "self-selected"... the assignor picks each of the referee crews based on his choices. He has a list to select from and uses a program called TheArbiter.net to assign each and use that to confirm. The selction is personal and the confirmation is email/web-based.
