yeah, but apparently, joe doesn't think so.

joe, we get it. fort mill invented the game. fort mill is the only good team and the goals that they have allowed (1, 2, or 3 - ??) should not be counted, because the other team's forwards were allowed to dribble past the defenders.

give it a rest.

hurst, what were the ages of the cesa cap team that newberry played against?

Exactly, defenders are a postion, defense is anytime the other team has the ball. I was trying to give our defenders some congrats, but as soon as i did, everyone and their brother analyzed this thing to death. Oh well, i guess it only matters in the end right.

anonymousjoe: I'm sorry if my question got in your way. I'm definitely not a soccer expert, but over the years I've seen quite a few games. As I'm sure you have, I've seen teams have roughly a gazillion shots on goal and not score, I've seen teams have one shot on goal and score, I've seen teams that rarely allowed the other team on their side of the field, I've seen teams that kept other teams from scoring despite their playing continuously defensively on their 1/3 of the field, and so on.

What I haven't seen is a soccer team in which "the defense" operates independently of the rest of the team. I'm not even sure what "the defense" is it seems to be often discussed. For example, I've seen forwards have an amazing impact defensively through pressure. Heck -- if you can only have one number, it seems that goal differential is a better measure of the quality of "the defense."

I have not a clue how "good" FM's defense is -- although I'm sure it's wonderful -- or Riverside's defense [although I know that Sarah Delap is an absolutely awesome keeper] -- but if you want to make a case on paper that a defense is outstanding, it seems to me that you're going to need a few more statistics than goals scored.

Rick,

Blakely Mattern and Shannon Bigbie, both seniors and USC recruits, were out there. You'll have to check with Pearse or Andrew regarding the rest of the team....I'm not sure.
