OK, I know this may not be the best place to start this thread, so I'm apologizing upfront. I have a 15 year old that wants to become a ref. What is the process for getting trained/licensed and then getting game assignmnets? Thanks in advance for any assistance. We are in Mt. Pleasant.

Perhaps this information can help:

In January there are some up coming referee clinics. I wanted to use this email to let everyone know the information in hope of getting current referees re-certify for 2006 and people interested in becoming referees to get certified. There are only a limited amount of seats for each class so please get signed up right away. Please note that this email is to just to inform you of the up coming clinics. Any information, questions, or how to get signed up can be better explained by going onto www.scysa.org web site. On the front page please go under Referees and then click under upcoming referee clinics / classes. Scroll down the page till you come to the clinic date you maybe interested in attending. Click onto the date and the information for the clinic will be available. Some clinics are still setting up locations but the dates and times are set. For now just get in the necessary paperwork and get your seat reserved for the clinic.

January 7th Re-Certification Clinic (9:00AM to 2:00PM) Location TBA
January 21st Re-Certification Clinic (9:30AM to 2:30PM) Location- Polo Rd Rec Center

January 13th, 14th, 15th Certification Clinic Location- TBA
January 27th, 28th, 29th Certification Clinic Location- TBA
NOTE: Must attend all three dates to become certified.

I know there are always a lot of questions about these clinics. Please feel free to contact the instructor of each clinic and they can answer any of your concerns.

Note: The prior posting is a cut and paste from Dennis Cook to Columbia Soccer Club personnel. I was just posting his email and needed to give him the credit.

Once he/she gets certified, to get games, you need to let ref assignors know you exist. I would suggest starting out with rec games to get some experience. In Mt. Pleasant, the town's in-house program is a good place to start and you can get quite a few games, plus, you won't have to drive far. They have a spring and a fall season that runs about 8 weeks and a season ending tournament. Mary Ellen Urig used to be the ref assignor several years ago, don't know if she still does it but if not, she can tell you who does. Here's her email: meurig@mpsoccer.com

Then, within the Charleston area, there is a league for rec teams to play other clubs, that's called the Lower State Youth Soccer Association. There seems to be a whole bunch of assignors for this league: http://www.lsysa.org/contacts.htm but Mary Ellen is listed as one of them. Spring (younger ages only) and fall season for this league also.

And rec tournaments are also a good way to get a pile of games. Summerville has one in Feb, Mt. Pleasant in March and James Island in Nov. Each tournament will have their own ref assignor. Go to the tournament website and the assignor should be listed or you can just contact the tournament director.

That should get your kid going, good luck. My 2 sons did it for years and enjoyed it. And boy, do I have some stories.......
