It is my understanding that the new club is about to kick off in York County/Rock Hill Area in the very near future. There is a grass root effort currently going on. Everything is is mum for now, but I understand they are trying to get use the Winthrop facilities and are asking the Winthrop staff to play a leadership role. I can't seem to find more out then this for the present time.

scsoccermann, I seriously doubt if the Gaffer and assistants Dan and Mike would get directly involved with a local club, no matter who it is. I do understand they have been approached about the use of the soccer fields and possible office space at Winthrop. Gaffer was always willing to serve as an advisor if needed or asked, but would never get directly involved, which it very smart. It has never been about money for him. As for Dan he coahes a team in Concord and Mike will be coaching in Charlotte. I know Gaffer does have some loyality to Discoveries, even though they are no longer using Winthrop. If the Gaffer feels it will be in the best interset for local kids and soccer in the area he will suppport anything good. He and Winthrop have been a tremendous assist and positive factor to the growth and development of soccer in this area over the years. Most of the coaches have played for him and most of the older players in the area have grown up around Winthrop soccer through camps, clinics, games, etc. I am sure he will continue to work behind the scenes and keep in the background like he always has, but seriously do not think he will get directly involved.

scmann,

I had assumed that CESA's outreach program into Rock Hill was the new club that was rumored to be starting? You know more?

For the Gaffer and/or the Winthrop community to intimately involve themselves with a specific club would be suicide. The Winthrop Soccer program has always reached out to the entire Piedmont.

Field rentals and the sharing of employees, in the past, has been the only connection, if this is considered one, to a local club.

The Gaffer is a great resource, for those of us local, we should not lose sight of this fact.
