This subject was discussed at the SCHSSCA Winter Clinic held in January:
quote:
(2) Our association also debated Friday night the way we want to approach the issue of how the HSL approves the eligibility of foreign students (in particular Hispanic/Latinos). Currently, the HSL does not accept foreign birth certificates and only accepts passports, citizenship papers, department of state form 1350, and foreign service forms 240/545. In short, illegal aliens (those without the aforementioned documents) are not permitted to play per HSL rules. There is a proposal in front of the HSL to accept foreign birth certificates and this is what I'd like folks opinions. Please reply with your point of view and reasons supporting your stance.
The State newspaper has done an excellent job with a special report on the Hispanic growth in the town of Saluda -- 45 miles west of Columbia and 28 miles southeast of Greenwood.

My initial thought on this July 4th is this question. Does being a US citizen have any worth if we allow benefits to those who are not in our country legally? Our country has put regulations in place in order to be a country of opportunity. For examples sake...what if everyone possible came to our country illegally. Our tax dollars could be supporting a completely foreign team.In a perfect world there would be unlimited positions available in regards to sports but due to facilities/budget constaints this is not possible. Are we to provide these soccer opportunities/education to those that are not citizens? Therefore, does being a US citizen have any worth? If everyone possible came to our country we would eventually lose the opportunity in our land. The few would be providing for the masses. If they would like to fully participate in this great country I am all for it. However, it appears that illegals want to pick and choose in what to participate. If they want the benefits it is only right that they accept the responsiblities/liabilities that accompany them.
