Should South Carolina Athletics make a 5A Division?
Some States have 5A Like Texas, Florida and California
It would include Summerville for sure in the new 5A Division
It would also make it a more even playing field between the smallest 4A Schools and the Giants of 4A like summerville, Fort D, Byrnes, Spring Valley and Irmo...
Schools of that nature and size

Should There Be A 5A Division?
single choice

Look at the states you just listed. I think it is self explanitory why they need a 5A division.

I like the idea. But do you know how the teams get to be in 4A, 3A, etc.? Currently, I believe, they count the # of students, grades 9-12, in each school. The top 48 schools, ranked by number of students, are 4A, the next 48 schools are 3A, the next 48 are 2A, and all the rest are 1A. (This does not include SCISA Schools) So going to 5 divisions means maybe they take 40 schools for each division. Not a big change at the 5A, 4A level, but more of an impact at the 3A, 2A level (I think). And being from the smallest 1A school playing soccer, closing the gap between us and the 1A school with the most students is a good thing. Note, GSSM lost to Buford in two consecutive years in the Lower State Championship game, now they are 2A. Sure wish they were 2A back then.

Ohio only has three division for soccer, and they have a heck of alot more schools. I don't think it is necessary. How many state champs do we need?

I'm thinking that the divisions are made by the student population of the schools indeed. Does it matter how many soccer state champs we got? The 5A would mostly benefit the smaller schools and would affect the bigger schools like, "Pick On Someone Your Own Size", deal. Because some of the bigger schools just get their good records off of the smaller ones, so how inflated is that?

Im a player in the 3A division, so how would having a 5A division affect me? I dont really understand, and i guess i should hear it out before I vote. That seems pretty logical, so if someone has a more indepth explanation i would be interested to hear

In terms of soccer, I think 5A should be pushed from the bottom, and until the majority of 1A schools field teams then it should remain 4A. Why move up the competitive 1A teams so we can have a state championship of small schools with little skill or competition?
Other sports may be a different matter, and football uses the Big 16 system instead of a 5A.
In basketball, I don't see that the competition warrants 5A.
Overall, in all sports (except football), the top 1A and 2A teams are competitive with the top 3A and 4A teams, so creating more distance just doesn't make sense.

The divisions are based on the assumption that the larger the student population a coach can draw from is, the greater his chances of finding quality players (in all sports). For a large school it is not unusal to have 60 or 70 players show up for soccer tryouts. For a school of 500 kids you might be asking kids to come play just to fill out your roster. The divisions are supposed to even this out. Unfortunately, I think that proximity to good club training is far more important than student population when it comes to fielding a soccer squad. I don't see realignment as helping. Consider 3A Greenville, they can play head on with any school in the state. Would creation of a 5A division move them into 2A? I'm not sure, but if it did that would be Ugly.

I didn't do it, but if I had you never would have known.

I hope you know that Byrnes is actually one of the smaller 4A schools in the state...but its been said that until some 1A schools field more teams then it doesnt make that much sense for soccer. This debate has raged many times for football but they just have two divisons of 4A and i dont think it would make that much difference in basketball and baaseball
