I am wondering if anyone else has experienced some of the worst refs? Alot comes from black shirts. Aren't they are suppose to have the most training? Just wondering.

Referees have different colored shirts so they do not blend in with the game...To my knowledge wearing a different colored shirt does not mean anything..The thing you want to look at is the badge that is on the shirt..That determines their level..

I thought the colors were the level of training the ref had received. Yellow (1st level), red (next level), and Black (highest). I stand corrected.

Huh? If you have to ask that question I seriously doubt you have the ability to question the abilities or calls of any official. You were joking right?

Good call, Giggs. Maybe way2go should take a referee course to learn the rules, and then they can work their way up from a yellow ref shirt to a black one.

Maybe his moniker is exactly that he has "way to go" before he knows what he is talking about.

If you want to know level of referee, you need to look at his patch.

i am a certified ussf referee; you have to take a weekend course and a test at the end to be certified. As stated above, it is the color of the patch that determines your level. They tell us to get at least 3 shirts so you don't blend with teams and also for weather purposes. Referee is a subjective job-not all people referee the same way..as i have witnessed in club games to college games to youth games to high school games. The color shirt has nothing to do with anything...LOL

I disagree that you need to be a referee to spot a bad one. I have seen enough referees to know who is controlling the game and who is controlled by it. I know enough when the ref has blown 5-10 calls a half giving the throw-in to the wrong team or awarding a corner when it should have been a goal kick. I know enough that when the 2nd to last defender is at midfield, the AR should not be at the 18. I know when a player has an intent to injure and the referee plays on. I know when a ref lets a wall form 4-5 yards in front of a free kick despite a coach and players asking for more. I have seen refs ignore AR flags on offsides when the player was 3 yards off. I could go on....you get the idea.

Would I be a perfect ref...doubtful. But I did referee basketball and did a very good job. I have read most of the rule book so have an idea of what to look for. With a son who is a ref I am sympathetic to them and NEVER yell at them during or after a game. I know the yelling never helps and won't get you the marginal call most of the time.

I was at a game last night and the ref had a black shirt with red trim. After the game I asked him what the red trim signified. He told me he was a "first degree black shirt" ref.

Way2go you might be onto something.
