Has anybody ever heard of getting suspended from school for an incident on a ball field? Soccer or whatever?

Yes, this is not an uncommon thing to happen. If a school has a no tolerance policy in place, that extends to extra-curricular activities as well. For example: In the past couple years I remember reading about a couple kids from Marion getting suspended from school for starting a fight after the game. If I recall correctly, the principal stated the no tolerance policy and they did not want for people to view their school that way.
Bottom line, you do something like fighting, stealing, etc... while part of a sports team, it not only makes you look bad, but also your team and your school.
Each situation is obviously different and I understand things happen in the heat of the moment. But if you lose control to the point of fighting or some other behavior, you may need some anger management along with the suspension. I have been around team sports as a coach and a player, and never have been impressed when someone loses their temper and starts fighting. I don't care what sport or level it occurs. It shows our immaturity and that our priorities are in the wrong place. Sports are supposed to teach us good values, when poor behavior goes unpunished it tells the offender it is ok.

Player at Bluffton got suspended for 10 days from school for pushing ref in back and another got 2 days for dropping F-Bombs, loud enough for everybody to hear.

Wow. That's pretty harsh, but I agree with the school in adding on additional punishment. It's fortunate the official did not press charges.

A great quote which I wish I could give credit for:
"Sports does not build character so much as it reveals it."
